Summary

  • preserve a persisted completed-task pane while startup is still reporting the temporary blank pane
  • make explicit new-chat/project navigation activate the blank pane through the shared pane-key helper
  • add a CI-covered desktop E2E regression that reloads from a persisted completed task and verifies its conversation is restored
  • isolate desktop E2E from inherited Wework/Codex runtime variables and re-sign cloned macOS test bundles after changing their bundle identifier

Root cause

useWorkbenchSplitGroups restored the persisted runtime pane during initialization, then its mount effect immediately activated the provider startup key blank:0. That overwrote the restored task before runtime work hydration completed, so a task that still existed and had a transcript appeared to load and then rendered blank.

Verification

  • old-code split-workbench regression: failed waiting for the restored completed assistant message
  • latest-main real Electron split-workbench: passed in 1m21s; evidence wework/test-results/desktop-e2e/2026-08-27T00-58-32-882Z-24381
  • DesktopWorkbenchLayout.test.tsx: 210/210 passed
  • split-group focused tests: 14/14 passed
  • TypeScript, ESLint, Prettier: passed
  • pre-push Wework static checks and unit tests: passed

Documentation

Documented WEWORK_E2E_HARNESS_RUNTIME_ROOT and the desktop E2E inherited-environment isolation behavior in Chinese and English.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved desktop E2E startup isolation by preventing inherited runtime settings from affecting test applications.
    • Fixed macOS test app launches after bundle changes by preserving valid application signing.
    • Improved workbench split-pane restoration, navigation, and invalid task cleanup.
    • Ensured new chats and project actions activate the correct pane.
    • Opened forked tasks immediately before refreshing work lists for more responsive task switching.
  • Documentation

    • Added English and Chinese guidance for configuring and troubleshooting desktop E2E runtime environments.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Desktop E2E now sanitizes inherited runtime variables and supports explicit Core DSH runtime selection. macOS Electron bundles are re-signed after identifier changes. Split-workbench behavior preserves restored panes, activates blank panes for outside-harness actions, and opens forked tasks before refreshing work lists.

Changes

Desktop E2E runtime setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime environment isolation
wework/e2e/desktop/modules/task-flow-main.mjs, docs/en/wework/developer-guide/wework-e2e-automation.md, docs/zh/wework/developer-guide/wework-e2e-automation.md
The runner reads WEWORK_E2E_HARNESS_RUNTIME_ROOT, removes inherited IPC, Core DSH, plugin, harness, and Node variables, then reapplies the selected runtime root. The guides document this configuration.
macOS bundle re-signing
wework/e2e/desktop/modules/desktop-build-flows.mjs
The cloned Electron bundle is ad hoc re-signed after its bundle identifier changes.
Restored pane E2E validation
wework/e2e/desktop/scenarios/split-workbench.scenario.mjs
The scenario persists a completed task pane, reloads the application, waits for hydration, and verifies that the pane is restored before creating the second task.

Workbench state management

Layer / File(s) Summary
Split-pane activation behavior
wework/src/components/layout/DesktopWorkbenchLayout.tsx, wework/src/components/layout/useWorkbenchSplitGroups.ts, wework/src/components/layout/useWorkbenchSplitGroups.test.tsx
Outside-harness actions activate the current blank pane. Initial activation preserves a restored runtime pane. Tests cover restored panes, stale blank panes, explicit blank-pane navigation, and invalid-pane removal.
Runtime task fork ordering
wework/src/features/workbench/useWorkbenchRuntimeTasks.ts, wework/src/features/workbench/WorkbenchProvider.test.tsx
Forking opens the forked task before refreshing runtime work lists. Tests verify the forked task becomes current while refresh is pending.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 466ff

The PR restores persisted task panes, but forked tasks can lose their project association when the target work is unavailable, preventing the project context from being restored later. This concrete correctness risk should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge; stable test IDs also need a minor follow-up.

Use the shared timeout for the composer wait.

As per coding guidelines: “Ordinary desktop E2E UI actions and waits use the shared 10-second step timeout. Pass an explicit timeoutMs only for a genuinely slow operation.”
