Summary

  • replace JSON field stripping with a typed persisted task metadata schema that excludes execution status, completion state, queue position, and transient errors
  • reconcile executor restarts only from durable execution evidence: an interrupted preparing Worktree fails, while historical and queued-not-started tasks remain idle and unchanged
  • document the restart evidence boundary and persistence invariants in the Chinese and English Worktree architecture docs

Root cause

The runtime task index restored every non-archived task as active. Executor startup then treated every managed Worktree task without a queue entry as interrupted execution, marked it failed, and rewrote updated_at, making untouched tasks appear recently updated.

Verification

  • cargo test --manifest-path executor/Cargo.toml
  • cargo test --manifest-path executor/Cargo.toml runtime_work --lib
  • cargo test --manifest-path executor/Cargo.toml --test app_runtime_work_native_update_contract --test app_runtime_work_workspace_contract --test app_runtime_work_worktree_contract
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path executor/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved restart recovery for interrupted worktree preparation and execution.
    • Prevented queued or historical work from being incorrectly marked as failed.
    • Preserved task activity history and timestamps during recovery.
    • Improved execution tracking, cleanup, and error reporting when tasks cannot start or finish safely.
    • Added compatibility for restoring previously archived tasks.
    • Prevented transient execution details from being persisted as task state.
    • Removed interrupted execution records after successful cleanup.
  • Documentation

    • Updated English and Chinese architecture documentation for task state, worktree execution, and restart recovery.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change separates durable task metadata, execution evidence, and Worktree lifecycle state. It adds persisted Worktree execution leases, startup failure handling, evidence-based restart reconciliation, legacy task-record compatibility, and updated architecture and end-to-end test coverage.

Changes

Runtime execution and recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Explicit runtime metadata persistence
executor/src/runtime_work/store.rs
Persisted task records omit transient completion and runtime-handle fields. Legacy status: "archived" records restore as archived and rewrite with archived: true.
Persisted Worktree execution leases
executor/src/runtime_work/worktrees.rs
Managed Worktrees persist execution leases. Start and finish operations validate execution ownership and identity. Explicit reconciliation reports interrupted execution.
Execution startup and restart reconciliation
executor/src/runtime_work/handler.rs, executor/src/runtime_work/handler/*.rs
Startup resolves the workspace, records execution evidence, and fails before spawning when initialization fails. Restart reconciliation uses interrupted preparation or execution outcomes instead of scanning stored task status.
Recovery validation and architecture contract
executor/src/runtime_work/handler/tests.rs, docs/en/architecture/git-worktree-execution.md, docs/zh/architecture/git-worktree-execution.md, wework/e2e/desktop/modules/cloud-worktree-flows.mjs, wework/e2e/desktop/scenarios/claude-runtime.scenario.mjs
Tests cover lease persistence, interruption evidence, historical and queued Worktrees, and cancellation sequencing. Documentation defines persistence boundaries and restart invariants. End-to-end checks read diagnostics from persisted Worktree records.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0815a

This change prevents executor restarts from incorrectly failing idle tasks and keeps transient execution state out of persistence. Merge is reasonable with owner awareness, but the English restart documentation still needs alignment with the implemented persistence and failure-recording boundaries, and the queued-worktree recovery test should recreate persisted queue state so the restart behavior is validated accurately.

Broaden the persisted metadata description.

executor/src/runtime_work/store.rs:59-145 persists durable fields such as runtime, continuable, goal_status, supervisor, timestamps, runtime_handle, parent, ephemeral, runtime_project_key, and runtime_workspace_roots. The phrase “only task identity, path, thread, archive, and presentation metadata” reads as an exhaustive inventory and does not match PersistedRuntimeTask. Replace it with “durable task metadata” or document the complete durable field categories. Keep the transient-field exclusions explicit.

Separate Worktree reconciliation from task-failure recording.

reconcile_worktree_state changes a valid preparing Worktree to active; only validation failure changes it to failed. handler/system.rs then marks the linked Runtime Task as failed through the Task Store for every interrupted_preparation outcome. Update both architecture diagrams so Worktree reconciliation targets G, while task-failure recording targets T.

Recreate the handler before testing persisted queue recovery.

Line 895 reloads only RuntimeWorkStore. The handler was created before line 894 writes the queue. Its in-memory scheduler queue is therefore empty.

reconcile_worktrees_once persists that empty in-memory queue. The test passes without validating startup queue restoration or Worktree queue partitioning.

Create a fresh restart-configured handler after writing the queue. Then assert that it loads and reconciles the persisted queue before checking the task state.

Share the interruption message instead of duplicating the literal.

The string "Executor restarted while the Worktree task was executing; runtime was not resumed" is also hardcoded in executor/src/runtime_work/worktrees.rs at line 1690. reconcile_worktree_state always sets record.last_error for both interruption kinds, so unwrap_or_else never runs today and the two copies can drift without any test catching it.

Export the message as a constant from worktrees.rs and use it in both places.

Move the blocking worktree write off the async runtime thread.

finish_execution calls load() and save(). save() writes a temporary file, calls sync_all(), renames, and on Unix fsyncs the parent directory. This is synchronous file I/O with two fsync calls.

finish_local_task_execution is synchronous and is called from finish_local_task, which runs inside the spawned turn tasks in executor/src/runtime_work/handler/turns.rs and executor/src/runtime_work/handler/claude_turns.rs. The fsync therefore blocks a Tokio worker thread on every turn completion.

Every other WorktreeManager file operation in executor/src/runtime_work/handler/system.rs is wrapped in tokio::task::spawn_blocking. Apply the same treatment here, for example by exposing an async wrapper that the async completion paths call.
