Summary

  • introduce a Cordis-based, local-only Wework host plugin runtime while keeping the Executor as the built-in execution core
  • migrate host routes, apps, settings, UI slots, and the right workspace panel to explicit plugin contribution registries
  • add local plugin discovery, SHA-256 validation, same-realm frontend loading, serialized reconciliation, and optional JSON-RPC stdio sidecars
  • enforce approved plugin roots, exact capability declarations, response correlation, sidecar timeouts, and transactional unload cleanup
  • add a bundled example plugin that contributes an app route, application entry, settings page, and a new right-sidebar option/panel
  • document the governed architecture in Chinese and English
  • keep cloud/Backend desired-state support out of this change

Example plugin flow

  1. Install the bundled wework-plugin-example package locally.
  2. Wework discovers .wework-plugin/plugin.json and verifies the declared frontend SHA-256.
  3. The plugin registers /plugin-example, /settings/plugin-example, an app entry, and api.rightPanels contribution example.
  4. Opening the right workspace shows “插件示例”; selecting it opens the plugin-owned panel and tab.
  5. Uninstalling/disabling the package triggers a rescan and removes its route, settings, app, right-panel option, tab, and content.

Verification

  • focused plugin/right-panel tests: 7 files, 213 tests passed
  • Wework full suite: 416 files, 4195 tests passed
  • Wework production build passed
  • Wework TypeScript and targeted ESLint passed
  • Rust full library suite: 207 tests passed
  • pre-push quality checks passed: Frontend/Wework ESLint, TypeScript and unit tests; Backend Black/isort/syntax; Executor fmt/test/clippy; settings and Alembic checks
  • real isolated Tauri ai:verify flow passed for plugin route, settings page, right-sidebar option, plugin panel, reload, and uninstall cleanup
  • final branch includes latest main (d17c1e49c) and is mergeable

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 19adb

The PR adds local plugin lifecycle management and optional sidecar execution. At the current head, sidecar shutdown can delay application exit by up to 30 seconds, while plugin disable or reload may leave registrations or workspace tabs behind; supporting scripts also have command-path and validation-portability issues. These are concrete, bounded merge-readiness risks that should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Read ALL_REVISIONS without shell expansion.

get_revision accepts non-standard IDs, but for rev in $ALL_REVISIONS splits whitespace and expands glob patterns. This can produce incorrect head results. Use while IFS= read -r rev; do ... done <<< "$ALL_REVISIONS" so HEADS remains in the current shell. Also use fixed-string matching in key_exists if non-standard IDs can contain regex characters.

normalize_plugin_id rejects manifest names that the backend accepts.

normalize_plugin_id allows only ASCII alphanumerics, -, and _. workbench_plugin_start requires plugin_id to equal inspected.manifest.name (Line 235), and wework/src/plugin-runtime/external.ts passes plugin.manifest.name as the id.

The backend parser in backend/app/services/plugin_package_parser.py places no charset restriction on the manifest name. A plugin named, for example, acme.tools passes upload validation, loads its frontend, and then fails on every workbench_plugin_start call with "Plugin id must contain only letters, numbers, '-' or '_'".

Align the two layers. Either accept the same character set the backend accepts, or reject the name at upload time.

Dispose each runtime so module-level registry state does not leak between tests.

WorkbenchPluginRuntime.initialize installs appServicePlugin and settingsServicePlugin. Both replace the module-level active registry in apps.ts and settings.tsx, and both return a restore function that only runs on disposal. Neither test calls runtime.dispose(), so the active registries stay pointed at the last test's instances for the lifetime of the module in that worker.

Add an afterEach that disposes the runtimes.

Based on learnings, tests must be kept independent and isolated.

Guard the index before splice in the failure path.

Replace the bare microtask flush with an act-aware assertion.

await Promise.resolve() flushes one microtask outside act. It does not guarantee that React processed the useSyncExternalStore notification from dispose(). The manual rerender hides that. This combination can produce act(...) warnings and can become order-dependent.

Consider lazy-loading the settings page modules.

This module imports every settings page eagerly. Any consumer of CORE_WORKBENCH_SETTINGS therefore pulls all 16 page components into the initial chunk, including large pages such as ArchivedConversationsSettingsPage. ConnectionsSettingsPage.tsx imports this module as a fallback, so the cost applies even when no settings page is open.

render already returns a ReactNode per contribution, so each entry can wrap a React.lazy component inside a Suspense boundary without changing the contribution contract.

1293-1299: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

settingsContributions gets a new identity on every render.

useActiveWorkbenchSettings returns registry.list(), and list() builds a new array with Array.from(...) on each call (wework/src/plugin-runtime/settings.tsx Lines 74-76). registeredSettings is therefore a different reference on every render, and so is settingsContributions.

That reference feeds the useEffect dependency array at Line 1315 and the useCallback dependency array at Line 1321. Two effects follow:

  • The popstate listener is removed and re-added on every render of this page.
  • openCloudSettings is recreated on every render, so it defeats memoization in any consumer.

Memoize on the registry contents.

♻️ Proposed fix
   const registeredSettings = useActiveWorkbenchSettings()
- const settingsContributions: readonly WorkbenchSettingsContribution[] =
-    registeredSettings.length > 0 ? registeredSettings : CORE_WORKBENCH_SETTINGS
+ const settingsContributions: readonly WorkbenchSettingsContribution[] = useMemo(
+    () => (registeredSettings.length > 0 ? registeredSettings : CORE_WORKBENCH_SETTINGS),
+    [registeredSettings]
+  )

This still re-runs when registeredSettings changes identity. For a stable result, cache the array inside WorkbenchSettingsRegistry.list() and invalidate that cache in emit().

The fallback branch renders the cloud connections page for any contribution without render.

ConnectionsDeviceSettingsPage is the fallback whenever activeContribution?.render is undefined. In CORE_WORKBENCH_SETTINGS only the connections entry omits render, so the current behavior is correct. render is optional on WorkbenchSettingsContribution, so an external plugin can register a contribution without it. That contribution would then display the cloud connections page with no error.

Either give the connections contribution an explicit render and treat a missing render as an error, or make render required on the interface.

Application exit can block for up to the sidecar timeout.

Return the cached snapshot from getSnapshot instead of a synthetic string.

useActiveWorkbenchApps subscribes with a string snapshot, then reads activeRegistry.list() outside the store. list() already returns a cached array that changes identity only on emit(). Returning it directly from getSnapshot satisfies the useSyncExternalStore contract and removes the second read.

♻️ Proposed refactor

Three modules repeat the same active-registry plumbing. Each registry module declares its own activeRegistry, activeRegistryListeners, activeRegistryRevision, unsubscribeActiveRegistry, notifyActiveRegistryListeners, replaceActiveRegistry, subscribeActiveRegistry, and getActiveRegistrySnapshot. The bodies are identical; only the registry type differs. A future fix to the subscription lifecycle must be applied three times.

Extract one generic helper, for example in wework/src/plugin-runtime/activeRegistry.ts:

interface ObservableRegistry {
  subscribe(listener: () => void): () => void
  version(): number
}

export function createActiveRegistry<T extends ObservableRegistry>(initial: T) {
  // owns activeRegistry, listeners, revision, and the current unsubscribe
  // returns { get, subscribe, getSnapshot, setActive }
}

The response channel is unbounded and is drained only during a request.

The reader thread forwards every stdout line to responses_tx. Nothing reads the channel between requests. A sidecar that emits notifications or log lines on stdout grows the channel without limit for the lifetime of the process.

read_matching_response also discards those queued notifications one request at a time, so an old backlog is charged to the next request's deadline.

Consider a bounded channel, or drain and discard non-matching messages before sending a new request.

Do not decide sidecar termination from error message text.

error.contains("timed out") || error.contains("exited") matches on formatted strings. A JSON-RPC error returned by the plugin is formatted at Line 382 as Plugin JSON-RPC error: {error}. If the plugin puts the text timed out in its error payload, the host stops the sidecar.

Return a typed error from read_matching_response, for example an enum with Timeout, Disconnected, and Rpc variants, and stop the sidecar only for the first two.

Move the blocking work in workbench_plugin_start off the IPC thread.

workbench_plugin_start is a synchronous Tauri command. It calls inspect_discovered_plugin, which reads the manifest, reads the whole frontend entry, and computes SHA-256 over the sidecar binary. It then spawns the process. All of this runs on the command thread while the global state.sidecars lock is held from Line 283.

workbench_plugin_list was already converted to async with spawn_blocking at Lines 253-258. Apply the same treatment to workbench_plugin_start, workbench_plugin_inspect, and workbench_plugin_authorize_capability, and take the map lock only for the insert.

Add a test for concurrent load deduplication.

ExternalWorkbenchPluginLoader.load now returns the pending promise from this.loading when the same plugin id is already loading (external.ts Lines 128-138). No test covers that path. A regression there produces duplicate registration errors, which is exactly the failure the map prevents.

Tauri v2 security.csp null default Content-Security-Policy data URL dynamic import

💡 Result:

In Tauri v2, setting the Content-Security-Policy (CSP) to null in tauri.conf.json effectively disables the built-in CSP enforcement entirely [1][2][3]. While this may be used during development or for debugging, it is highly discouraged for production applications as it removes a critical security layer against cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks [2][3][4]. Regarding dynamic imports and data: URLs: 1. Dynamic Imports: If you are using dynamic imports (e.g., import()), your CSP must be configured to allow them. Because dynamic imports often load scripts, you must ensure that your script-src directive permits the necessary sources. If your imports originate from your own bundle, 'self' is usually sufficient, as Tauri automatically manages nonces and hashes for bundled assets [5][6]. If you are loading scripts from external sources, you must explicitly include those origins or hashes in your CSP [6]. 2. Data URLs: If your application requires loading resources via data: URLs (e.g., base64-encoded images or scripts), you must explicitly add data: to the relevant CSP directives (such as img-src or script-src) in your tauri.conf.json [5][6]. By default, a restrictive CSP in Tauri will block data: URLs unless they are permitted in the policy [5][3]. Tauri v2 automatically performs CSP injection at compile time, appending necessary nonces and hashes to your bundled code and assets [5][4]. If you encounter issues where this automatic modification interferes with your specific dynamic loading requirements, you can use the dangerousDisableAssetCspModification configuration option, though this should be used with caution as it requires you to manually manage the security of your CSP [4]. For optimal security, you should define a restrictive CSP that adheres to the principle of least privilege, avoiding 'unsafe-inline' and 'unsafe-eval' whenever possible [2][3]. If you are using WebAssembly, remember to include 'wasm-unsafe-eval' in your script-src directive [6].

Document the self-contained bundle requirement for frontend.entry.

security.csp is null, so the current Tauri configuration does not block the data: import. However, relative and bare imports fail because the data: module has no base URL and sourcePath is ignored. State that frontend.entry must be fully bundled with no imports.

Declare restoreSecond as () => void. Its current type is () => undefined, which rejects the () => void value returned by setActiveWorkbenchRightPanelRegistry.
