📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughContext compaction now confirms persisted transcript completion, preserves synthetic subtask identity, deduplicates runtime events, reconciles optimistic workbench state, returns completion identifiers, and adds desktop E2E coverage and documentation. ChangesContext compaction lifecycle
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Some supported completion payloads may still fail to produce the compaction marker, and the desktop regression can race its request-count assertion, creating a bounded user-visible correctness gap and an unreliable merge check. Address or explicitly accept these risks before merging. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

What
Why
Clicking Compress returned after
thread/compact/startwas accepted, before Codex persisted the compacted summary. Wework refreshed too early, so the completion marker could be missing and the next turn could still use the uncompacted context.Impact
Manual context compaction now has an authoritative completion boundary. Users get immediate progress feedback, a single completion marker, and subsequent turns use the persisted compacted summary.
Root cause
The executor treated RPC acceptance as completion, while the bundled Codex app-server can persist the
contextCompactionitem hundreds of milliseconds later and does not consistently forward a dedicated compaction notification. The UI therefore settled and refreshed before the transcript became authoritative.Verification
cargo test --manifest-path executor/Cargo.toml context_compaction -- --nocapturepnpm --filter wework test src/features/workbench/runtimeConversationTurns.test.ts src/features/workbench/runtimePaneMessages.test.tspnpm --filter wework typecheckpnpm --filter wework e2e:desktop -- --segment context-compactioncargo test --all-features --lib, and ClippyE2E proof
The desktop scenario holds the compaction model response open, asserts exactly one request and one running indicator, releases the response, verifies the completed indicator, then sends a follow-up and asserts that the model request contains the persisted compaction summary.
