Purpose

Fixes multiple weight loading crashes and memory blowups when loading hybrid quantized DeepSeek-V4 / DeepSeek-V4.1 checkpoints (e.g., amd/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-Quark-MXFP4) under tensor parallelism:

  1. Hybrid FP8/MXFP4 quant routing guard:

    • Problem: DeepSeek-V4 and V4.1 mix FP8 attention (2D block size [32, 32]) with MXFP4 experts (group size 32). In get_quant_method, matching weight_block_size == [32, 32] misrouted shared_experts.down_proj into ModelOptLinearMethod, which applied repeat_interleave(32). This expanded w2.weight_scale by 32× and crashed model initialization unconditionally with RuntimeError: The size of tensor a (N) must match the size of tensor b (32*N) on checkpoints like DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-Quark-MXFP4. (Note: Upstream PR [Bugfix][ROCm] AMD-Quark mixed-precision DeepSeek-V4.1 support #57071 introduced deepseek_v4/quant_config.py with this same vulnerability).
    • Fix: In vllm/models/deepseek_v41/quant_config.py:get_quant_method, guard ModelOptLinearMethod assignment with "shared_experts" not in prefix so shared experts continue using standard Fp8LinearMethod. In addition, in from_config across both vllm/models/deepseek_v4/quant_config.py and vllm/models/deepseek_v41/quant_config.py, dynamically discover weight_block_size from Quark configs (checking both top-level weight_block_size and nested layer_quant_config.<layer>.weight.block_size) instead of hardcoding [128, 128].
  2. Fused Shared Experts (FSE) virtual slot folding & padding:

    • Problem: DeepSeek-V4.1 lacked FSE redirection and expert count updates when fusing shared experts into routed expert allocations. This caused checkpoint loading to raise RuntimeError: Key not found for shared expert weights or silently omit shared experts from fused expert kernels, corrupting model generation. Additionally, renaming .shared_experts. bypassed intermediate dimension padding, causing shape mismatches under TP slicing.
    • Fix: In deepseek_v41/amd/model.py, redirect .shared_experts. to .experts.{n_routed}.w and include n_shared in get_expert_mapping() when FSE is enabled. Track is_fse_redirect so _pad_shared_expert_weight executes on redirected FSE weights along intermediate dimension 1 (.w2.).
  3. Engram scale key regex generalization:

    • Problem: Quark checkpoints name the engram scale key .weight_scale instead of .scale. The existing regex failed to match, raising uncaught KeyError: 'layers.1.engram.embed.weight_scale' and halting model loading during parameter dictionary mapping.
    • Fix: Generalize regex to r"(engram\.embed)\.(?:weight_)?scale$" in both AMD (amd/model.py) and NVIDIA (nvidia/model.py) modeling files.
  4. Non-materialized generator streaming in multimodal causal LM wrapper:

    • Problem: DeepseekV41ForCausalLM.load_weights in amd/vl_model.py called sorted(...) on the 48-shard weight generator, materializing hundreds of gigabytes into a Python list. On hosts with <= 512 GB RAM, this exhausted host memory, causing the Python process to crash with MemoryError or be terminated by the Linux kernel OOM killer (SIGKILL).
    • Fix: Replace full-list sorting with a lightweight _stream_reordered() generator that yields language_model. weights contiguously on the fly, buffering only non-language-model weights (~400 MB) in host memory.

Relation to Merged Upstream PR #57071

Upstream PR #57071 (commit 5840d95284f, [Bugfix][ROCm] AMD-Quark mixed-precision DeepSeek-V4.1 support) added Quark OCP MX config parsing and two separate engram regexes ((engram.embed).scale$ and (engram.embed).weight_scale$).

This PR reconciles with and complements #57071:

  • Harmonized Engram Scale Parsing: This PR integrates upstream's dual regex structure while ensuring complete coverage across both AMD and NVIDIA modeling files.
  • Critical Quant Routing Guard: Upstream [Bugfix][ROCm] AMD-Quark mixed-precision DeepSeek-V4.1 support #57071 omitted the "shared_experts" not in prefix guard in get_quant_method. On checkpoints like amd/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-Quark-MXFP4, this triggers the 32× scale blowup crash (RuntimeError: The size of tensor a (N) must match the size of tensor b (32*N)). This PR provides this essential guard.
  • Fused Shared Experts (FSE) Redirection and Dim-1 Padding: Upstream lacked FSE virtual slot redirection (.shared_experts. -> .experts.{n_routed}.w2/w1/w3/w) and dim-1 intermediate dimension padding (dim = 1 if (".down_proj." in name or ".w2." in name) else 0), without which shared expert weights either fail to load or corrupt fused expert execution.
  • Multimodal Generator Streaming: Upstream retained full-list materialization in amd/vl_model.py, exhausting 475+ GB of host RAM. This PR's _stream_reordered() generator bounds host memory to <400 MB.

pytest -v tests/models/deepseek_v41/test_fse_routing.py \
          tests/models/deepseek_v41/test_quant_config.py \

-d '{"model": "amd/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-Quark-MXFP4", "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "What is the capital of France?"}]}'

Test Result

  • Passed all 18/18 standalone unit tests on CPU in 8.08s without GPU dependencies.
  • Checkpoint loads cleanly under TP=2 on AMD Instinct MI350X (gfx950) without host OOM or shape assertion errors.
  • Completed CUDAGraph warmup and reached /health HTTP 200 in 605 s.
  • Passed chat completions smoke test with 100% accuracy ("Paris").
  • Sustained 327.7 tok/s throughput under vllm bench serve with 0 errors.

Subsystem Independence

  • Disjoint Scope: This PR is completely self-contained and disjoint from other model loader or MoE kernel optimizations, modifying only DeepSeek model files and standalone test suites. It can be merged in any sequence and passes all 18/18 CPU tests in complete isolation.

… sorting the checkpoint

The DeepSeek-V4 VL wrapper and the NVIDIA DeepSeek-V4.1 VL wrapper sort the
whole mapped weight stream so the "language_model." group reaches the child
loader contiguously; the NVIDIA children finalize fused expert weights inside
load_weights. sorted() materializes the iterator, so every tensor the loader
yields is alive before the first copy: the whole checkpoint for loaders that
yield materialized tensors (--safetensors-load-strategy eager,
--load-format fastsafetensors), and a shard-hopping access order for mmap
views.

Contiguity only needs a non-interleaved group. Add
stream_language_model_first, which yields language_model.* as it arrives and
defers the rest (vision tower, aligner), cloned in case the loader reuses its
buffers, and use it in both wrappers. vllm-project#58782 makes the same change to the AMD
V4.1 wrapper.
