WalkthroughDeepSeek V3 and V3.1 tool parsers now apply the configured regex timeout during full and streaming extraction. Full extraction preserves content after a timeout. Streaming extraction stops processing later deltas after a timeout. Tests cover both parsers. ChangesDeepSeek regex timeout handling

Verified locally (head 33de2fa vs base bc96d76) — the vulnerability is real, the fix is correct and complete.
DoS reproduced (live, actual compiled patterns + real parser class): the deepseek_v3 tool_call_regex is a nested-.* pattern whose findall exhibits quadratic backtracking on adversarial output that passes the <|tool▁calls▁begin|> sanity gate but contains many <|tool▁sep|> tokens with no terminating `
````json``` structure. Measured on the real parser:
- 520 KB adversarial completion: BASE (no timeout) = 11.6 s event-loop stall, 0 matches; HEAD (timeout=1, the env default) returns in 1.00 s with
TimeoutErrorcaught,tools_called=False, and the full content preserved (fail-soft — no tool call fabricated, nothing dropped from the assistant message). - Growth is clearly quadratic (30k seps → 6.4 s, 50k → 17.8 s unbounded), so larger pathological completions stall proportionally longer — the API-server event loop is blocked for the whole duration on the un-fixed code.
Coverage is complete: all 3 regex call sites in each parser carry timeout=envs.VLLM_TOOL_PARSE_REGEX_TIMEOUT_SECONDS — non-streaming tool_call_regex.findall (extract_tool_calls), streaming stream_tool_call_portion_regex.match, and the stream_tool_call_name_regex.match fallback (deepseekv3: :99/:268/:278; deepseekv31: :96/:265/:275). Both parsers add except TimeoutError in the non-streaming (→ content-only result) and streaming (→ skip delta) paths. Env var already exists (default 1 s, int) and is used identically by 5 sibling parsers (llama, pythonic, olmo3, lfm2, llama4_pythonic) — the deepseek pair was simply missed; no new config surface.
Tests: 6/6 new timeout tests pass at head (mock-asserting the timeout= kwarg is forwarded and that TimeoutError degrades fail-soft / skips the delta in both parsers). Teardown "errors" are the standard CPU-host cleanup_dist_env_and_memory fixture noise (no accelerator), identical on base. Full deepseek parser suites: 24 passed / 2 xfailed (errors all teardown noise).
No regression on well-formed input: a valid <|tool▁calls▁begin|>…get_weather…```json```… call still parses to 1 tool call at head in <1 ms with the timeout arg present. The regex module's timeout only interrupts pathological backtracking; ordinary matches complete far under 1 s.
Not a duplicate: #54678 (poolside_v1/dots rewrite), #52119, #45172, #54090 cover different parsers/mechanisms — confirmed no open PR adds timeouts to these deepseek parsers.
Non-blocking note: envs parses the var as int, so sub-second values (e.g. 0.2) raise ValueError at call time (falls into the generic except Exception path and still fails soft). Consistent with sibling parsers; flagging only so nobody assumes float granularity.
A streaming TimeoutError used to leave parser state active, so later deltas re-ran the same regex and could stall the event loop once per token. Latch the timeout for the rest of the stream. Summary
The
deepseek_v3anddeepseek_v31tool parsers run multi-.*regexpatterns on model output without a timeout. Sibling parsers already passtimeout=VLLM_TOOL_PARSE_REGEX_TIMEOUT_SECONDSso a pathological completion cannot stall the API-server event loop. This applies the same limit and treatsTimeoutErroras "no tool call" / skip the stream delta.This is not a duplicate of #54678 (poolside_v1 / dots regex rewrite) or other open timeout work: those do not cover these DeepSeek parsers.
Changes
vllm/tool_parsers/deepseekv3_tool_parser.py: pass the existing regex timeout onfindall/ both streamingmatchsites; catchTimeoutError.vllm/tool_parsers/deepseekv31_tool_parser.py: same for the sibling parser (greedy.*on the streaming patterns).Codepath coverage
extract_tool_calls(findall) for both parsers.matchand namematchfor both parsers.Tests
test_regex_timeout_treated_as_no_tool_call— timeout is fail-closed (content returned, no tool calls) andtimeout=is passed.test_streaming_portion_regex_timeout_skips_delta— streaming portion match times out and skips the delta.test_streaming_name_regex_timeout_skips_delta— streaming name-regex fallback times out and skips the delta.Well-formed DeepSeek tool-call strings still parse after the timeout argument is added. No model-output change for valid completions; no eval rerun.
