The packed GDN decode kernel rounded the FP32 sigmoid(beta) to the input dtype (bf16) before folding it into the FP32 recurrent state. That kernel is the exact decode path Qwen3.8-27B runs on ROCm (the aiter RDNA fast path only serves Qwen3-Next's interleaved GQA layout), and the per-step rounding error compounds with decode length, degrading long-context accuracy for the Qwen3.5-3.8 families. Upstream merged as vllm-project/vllm#53877 (in v0.29.0rc1, absent from v0.28.1rc0); carried as a local patch until a VLLM_REF bump includes it. Verified: git apply --check clean on the v0.28.1rc0 tree; applied result is byte-identical to the v0.29.0rc1 file; upstream regression test (test_packed_decode_keeps_beta_in_fp32) passes on the rebuilt image (8/8). No decode perf regression (tg32/tg128 at baseline); pp2048 reads mid-band (~2810, boot variance band 1950-3280). Deployed via just build && just up. Also records 2026-09-02 update-check findings in AGENTS.md: AITER v0.1.21 stable released (unified-attention refactor #5088, #4329 unfixed, no bump), #54498 sole-fix #54716 open with an unresolved overflow-path review defect, new #54928 (DFlash2+thinking greedy divergence on Qwen3.8-27B, monitor).

The GDN packed decode kernel and the GDN/KDA linear-replay decode kernel
rounded sigmoid(beta) through the activation dtype:
beta_val = tl.sigmoid(b_val).to(b.dtype.element_ty).to(tl.float32)
The rounded beta feeds the delta-rule update of the persistent SSM state,
so the rounding error enters the state once per decode step and
accumulates with context length: state rel-L2 reaches 1.4e-3 after 1000
decode steps, vs 1e-7 with the round-trip removed. The failure is silent
(outputs stay well-formed, per-op tolerances stay green).
The same line was fixed in vLLM in vllm-project/vllm#53877 (the packed
decode kernel originated there; sglang#20627 imported it pre-fix) but was
never ported. Both sites now keep beta in fp32, mirroring the form the
KDA packed decode kernel in the same file already uses deliberately.
fused_recurrent_linear_replayssm.py:138 sits before the IS_KDA branch, so
this fixes both the GDN and KDA replay paths.
Adds regression tests:
- degenerate single-step checks for both kernels: with zero initial state
and unit inputs the stored state equals sigmoid(b) itself, so the state
pool reads the (non-)round-trip directly; asserted against the fp32
value and away from the activation-dtype-rounded value
- 1000-step packed-decode drift test vs a beta-in-fp32 torch recurrence
(rel-L2 < 1e-4; measured 1.05e-7 after the fix, 1.4e-3 before)
Verified locally on CUDA in bf16 and fp16.
Fixes sgl-project#38975

Purpose
The packed GDN decode kernel loads
bin FP32 and computessigmoid(b)inFP32, but then rounds the result to the input dtype before converting it back to
FP32:
For BF16 inputs, this perturbs every recurrent state update and the error
compounds over long decode sequences. The standard fused sigmoid decode path
and the fused prefill preparation path keep beta in FP32.
This affects long-context accuracy for models in the Qwen3.5 through Qwen3.8
families when they use the packed GDN decode path. Because the recurrent state
is reused at every decode step, the beta rounding error accumulates with context
length and can eventually degrade generation accuracy and stability.
This change removes the unnecessary dtype round-trip, updates the existing
packed-vs-reference test to use an FP32 beta, and adds a focused regression test
with BF16 activations and an FP32 recurrent state. On the regression input, the
old kernel produces
0.62109375while the FP32 reference is0.62245935.The fix was first validated downstream in
flagos-ai/vllm-plugin-FL#385.
It is an implementation-level precision fix rather than an NVIDIA-specific
code path; H100 is the validation platform for this PR.
