Track HIT_PENDING deadlines per request and key, then fall back to a stable MISS when the configurable timeout expires. Add cleanup, observability, documentation, and regression tests. Fixes vllm-project#49829 Signed-off-by: thunguo <tew@apache.org>

Pull request overview
This PR fixes an indefinite LookupResult.HIT_PENDING condition in TieringOffloadingManager.lookup() by introducing a per-(request, key) timeout for primary-tier in-flight writes. After the deadline, the manager returns a stable MISS for the remainder of the request so the scheduler can recompute locally instead of hot-looping on a stuck write, and it emits a metric to make these events observable.
Changes:
- Add per-request/per-key
HIT_PENDINGdeadlines with stable post-timeoutMISS, plus lifecycle cleanup on resolution, request finish, and cache reset. - Expose
hit_pending_timeout_sviakv_connector_extra_config(default 5s) and validate the value. - Add
vllm:kv_offload_tiering_hit_pending_timeoutsmetric + metadata, and document the new configuration option.

Thanks.
Main comment referring to every failed promotion round hands the request a fresh 5 s window.
Okay, I'll handle these later. |
Keep each request-key deadline across failed promotion rounds so retries cannot renew the deferral window. Preserve primary lookup metric semantics, add rate-limited diagnostics, and extend regression coverage. Signed-off-by: thunguo <tew@apache.org>

Purpose
Fixes #49829.
TieringOffloadingManager.lookup()returnedHIT_PENDINGindefinitely when a primary-tier write stalled. The scheduler kept polling the same key and could defer the affected request until its client timed out. This PR:
HIT_PENDINGdeadline independently for each(request, key);MISSfor the rest of the request after the deadline, so the scheduler can recompute the block locally without starting another secondary-tier promotion;hit_pending_timeout_sinkv_connector_extra_config, with a default of 5 seconds;vllm:kv_offload_tiering_hit_pending_timeouts;This does not duplicate an existing PR. An open-PR search for #49829 currently finds #52571, which fixes the P2P abort lifecycle and explicitly does not change the scheduler timeout or generic
HIT_PENDINGbehavior. A separate open-PRsearch for
HIT_PENDINGdeadlines returned no matching implementation.Test Plan
The regression tests use a controlled monotonic clock and fake/CPU tiers. They cover timeout fallback, stable per-request misses, independent request and key deadlines, deadline clearing after resolution, promotion deadlines, metrics, configuration validation, request cleanup, and cache-reset cleanup.
