Cap the cumulative length of realtime sessions

What this fixes

The realtime API checked individual inputs but did not re-check the model-length limit when a
resumable session appended more tokens under the same request ID.

For example, on a server with max_model_len=64, a client can start a realtime audio session and
append enough audio to grow the cumulative prompt to 65 tokens. Before this change, the scheduler
accepted the update, entered an invalid state, and left /health returning 503. After this change,
the scheduler detects that the update would exceed the remaining budget, ends that session with a
normal length-limit result, and keeps the engine healthy.

Why it matters

An ordinary authenticated /v1/realtime client could stop the shared engine for every concurrent
user by growing one resumable session beyond the configured context length. This is a service
availability issue; no code execution or data disclosure is involved.

The change

Session updates now check cumulative computed tokens plus the appended tokens against
max_model_len before sampling. Over-limit sessions finish with FinishReason.LENGTH and the
streaming-length-cap stop reason. The change also keeps terminal request IDs and routing state
until cleanup is acknowledged, so late same-ID chunks cannot revive a finished session and all
workers complete cleanup.

How it was tested

The focused suite changed from 18 failures, 3 passes, and 44 deselected tests without the fix to
21 passes and 44 deselected tests with it. It covers direct and schedule-time over-limit updates,
same-ID cleanup, route retention, and in-process cleanup. The live replay changed the 65-over-64
case from an unhealthy engine (/health 503) to a length-capped session with /health 200.

Thanks for putting this up. We also encountered this issue in our RFC #51948 and we'd love the
same signal with a survivable session: cap the reply, keep the session alive so the
client can react (trim, re-open, continue), instead of terminating it. Happy to
align #53876 with whatever shape lands here.

Thanks @nvbfalk — a survivable session is the better shape, agreed.

I'm reworking this so hitting the cap returns a distinct, recoverable signal on that turn and keeps the session open (client can trim and continue) instead of tearing it down, while still bounding cumulative growth so it stays a real DoS guard.

Happy to align the exact signal with #51948 / #53876 — if you have a preferred error surface, I'll match it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Streaming requests that exceed the model’s maximum length now finish cleanly with a length-limit result.
    • Queued updates are no longer applied after a request reaches its terminal state.
    • Completed streaming requests are cleaned up reliably, preventing stale routing and allowing request IDs to be reused.
    • Streaming requests remain routed to their original engine during resumptions and finalization.
    • Request output compatibility is preserved for existing integrations.
    • Configured profilers are now correctly honored when starting and stopping profiling.

Walkthrough

The change adds length-cap handling for resumable streaming requests. It propagates terminal outputs through the scheduler and engine clients, preserves data-parallel routing until cleanup acknowledgment, updates output processing, stores the profiler, and adds lifecycle and wire-compatibility tests.

Changes

Output processing receives finished request IDs. Data-parallel clients retain streaming routes until cleanup acknowledgment. AsyncLLM stores the profiler argument.
Stop-reason wire compatibility
rust/src/engine-core-client/src/tests/*, tests/v1/engine/test_output_processor.py
Compatibility fixtures and msgspec tests validate the streaming-length-cap stop reason and its wire position.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 7a1a3

Over-limit streaming sessions can hang or be revived by late input after cleanup, while clients may not receive the intended distinct stop reason. The affected lifecycle coverage is also not reliably executing, so these issues should be fixed before merge.

Keep the terminal streaming output marked as finished.

When an engine-finished streaming request reaches the new terminal path, this assignment changes its final output to unfinished. The code then closes the collector and removes the request state. AsyncLLM.generate() yields the length output and then waits indefinitely for a final output that cannot arrive.

Only set request_output.finished = False when the request remains resumable in the engine.

Initialize engine_inflight in each client fixture.

These fixtures bypass DPLBAsyncMPClient.__init__, but the tested methods access client.engine_inflight. The route tests raise AttributeError during scoring. The cleanup tests raise AttributeError during decrement. Initialize client.engine_inflight = Counter() in each fixture and import Counter.

Preserve resumable sessions at the model-length cap.

_finish_length_capped_streaming_request removes the request and emits FinishReason.LENGTH. The frontend then closes the streaming queue, so later chunks cannot trim the context or continue under the same request ID. Emit a distinct recoverable cap result, keep the session alive, and reject only updates whose cumulative length exceeds max_model_len.

No producer emits the streaming-length-cap stop reason. Both length-cap emission paths construct the terminal EngineCoreOutput with finish_reason=FinishReason.LENGTH and leave stop_reason unset, while the wire fixture in rust/src/engine-core-client/src/tests/python_compat.py at Line 203 asserts stop_reason="streaming-length-cap". A client cannot distinguish a streaming length cap from an ordinary max_tokens or max_model_len LENGTH finish. Define one shared constant and set it at every emission site.

  • vllm/v1/core/sched/scheduler.py#L1879-L1886: set the stop reason on the EngineCoreOutput built from scheduler_output.terminal_streaming_reqs.
  • vllm/v1/engine/core.py#L1991-L1992: pass the stop reason through _send_finished_outputs. Add an optional stop-reason parameter rather than hard-coding it in _send_finish_outputs_to_client, because that helper also serves the abort and error paths.

The InprocClient.add_request path in vllm/v1/engine/core_client.py builds the same output and needs the same value; that file is outside this review cohort. Add a test assertion on stop_reason in tests/v1/streaming_input/test_scheduler_streaming.py so the producer and the wire fixture stay aligned.

Stop the input task before terminal cleanup.

handle_inputs can continue to call _add_request, and its finally block submits final_req. After terminal output processing, the abort acknowledgment clears the scheduler terminal-ID guard. A later chunk can then create new frontend state and start a new request with the capped request ID.

Cancel or mark the input task terminal before the acknowledgment. Drop later chunks and the final sentinel. Add a regression test where the input generator yields after the terminal output.
