…onsistency The streaming path uses re.search (first-match) while the non-streaming path uses json.loads (last-wins) for duplicate keys. This causes inconsistent tool name extraction when a model emits JSON with duplicate 'name' fields. Add object_pairs_hook that rejects duplicate keys, making both paths produce identical results. Well-formed tool calls (single name key) are unaffected. As suggested by @jperezdealgaba in the security advisory — filed as a code quality improvement rather than a security fix. Summary
Following the security advisory discussion, filing as a code quality improvement as suggested by @jperezdealgaba.
The Hermes tool parser has a streaming/non-streaming inconsistency:
_extract_tool_nameusesre.search(first-match) while the non-streaming path usesjson.loads(last-wins for duplicate keys). A model emitting{"name": "A", "name": "B", ...}would have the tool name resolve differently depending on whether the request is streamed. This PR implements Option C from the advisory: reject tool-call JSON with duplicate keys. This makes the streaming and non-streaming paths produce identical results regardless of which extraction mechanism is used.
Changes
Added a
object_pairs_hookto thejson.loadscalls in the non-streaming path that raises on duplicate keys. This surfaces the malformed JSON early (the model shouldn't be emitting duplicate keys in a well-formed tool call) and makes both paths consistent.Checklist
