Purpose

Internlm2ToolParser.extract_tool_calls_streaming's "first time to get parameters" branch computes the initial arguments delta with:

arguments_delta = cur_arguments_json[
    : cur_arguments_json.index(delta_text) + len(delta_text)
]

This assumes the model's raw delta_text always appears verbatim inside json.dumps(cur_arguments)'s re-serialized string. Once the model's own JSON formatting diverges from Python's default json.dumps spacing (e.g. compact JSON with no space after :, which InternLM2 and many models commonly emit), .index() raises ValueError, which the caller's broad except Exception swallows into a lost delta — the arguments for that tool call are permanently dropped (prev_tool_call_arr is never updated on this path either, so the parser doesn't recover on the next chunk).

Modifications

Mirror the sibling "both prev and cur parameters" branch a few lines below, which already uses extract_intermediate_diff(cur, prev) instead of any substring-position assumption. For the first-time case there's no previous string to diff against, so extract_intermediate_diff(cur_arguments_json, "") resolves to the full re-serialized JSON string as intended, without depending on delta_text's exact formatting.

Duplicate-work check

Read the full diffs of all 3 currently open PRs touching this file:

None of their changed line ranges overlap line 150 or the "first time to get parameters" branch this PR fixes; they address unrelated symptoms in the same file.

Test Plan

  • Drive a real Internlm2ToolParser with a streamed compact-JSON tool call — '{"name":"get_weather"' then ',"parameters":{"city":"SF"}}' (no space after :), the formatting the parser's .index() lookup assumes away.
  • Add a regression test for that exact scenario to tests/tool_parsers/test_internlm2_tool_parser.py.
  • pytest tests/tool_parsers/test_internlm2_tool_parser.py; confirm red-before/green-after by reverting only the source change.
  • ruff check / ruff format --check.

Test Result

  • Reproduced against a real Internlm2ToolParser instance before touching source: streaming '{"name":"get_weather"' then ',"parameters":{"city":"SF"}}' (compact JSON, no space after :) raised ValueError: substring not found and returned None for the second delta.
  • Added test_streaming_first_arguments_delta_survives_compact_json_formatting to tests/tool_parsers/test_internlm2_tool_parser.py covering this exact scenario — verified red before the fix, green after.
  • Full tests/tool_parsers/test_internlm2_tool_parser.py: 10 passed, 8 xfailed. The 8 xfails are pre-existing "InternLM2 streaming not fully implemented" markers in the shared ToolParserTests harness, unchanged before/after this diff.
  • ruff check and ruff format --check: clean.

…internlm2 parser

Internlm2ToolParser.extract_tool_calls_streaming's "first time to get
parameters" branch computed the initial arguments delta with:

    cur_arguments_json[: cur_arguments_json.index(delta_text) + len(delta_text)]

This assumes the model's raw delta_text always appears verbatim inside
json.dumps(cur_arguments)'s re-serialized string. Once the model's own JSON
formatting diverges from Python's default json.dumps spacing (e.g. compact
JSON with no space after ':'), .index() raises ValueError, which the caller's
broad except Exception swallows into a lost delta -- the arguments for that
tool call are permanently dropped, since prev_tool_call_arr is never updated
on this path either.

Fix by mirroring the sibling "both prev and cur parameters" branch a few
lines below, which already uses extract_intermediate_diff(cur, prev) instead
of any substring-position assumption: call
extract_intermediate_diff(cur_arguments_json, "") for the first-time case
(no previous string to diff against), which resolves to the full
re-serialized JSON string as intended, without relying on delta_text's
formatting.

Verified with a standalone repro against a real Internlm2ToolParser instance
before touching source: streaming '{"name":"get_weather"' then
',"parameters":{"city":"SF"}}' (compact JSON, no space after ':') raised
ValueError: substring not found and returned None for the second delta.
Added test_streaming_first_arguments_delta_survives_compact_json_formatting
(tests/tool_parsers/test_internlm2_tool_parser.py) covering this exact
scenario -- red before the fix, green after. Full
tests/tool_parsers/test_internlm2_tool_parser.py: 10 passed, 8 xfailed
(pre-existing "InternLM2 streaming not fully implemented" xfail markers in
the shared ToolParserTests harness, unrelated to this change -- unchanged
before/after). ruff check and ruff format: clean.

Duplicate-work check: read the diffs of all 3 currently open PRs touching
this file (vllm-project#44140, vllm-project#48348, vllm-project#47968) -- none of their changed line ranges
(77/202, 26/79-128, 214) overlap line 150 or the "first time to get
parameters" branch; they fix unrelated issues (multi-marker ValueError,
whole-call-in-single-delta, unlisted-tool-name).

The ValueError is real and worth fixing, but I don't think this is the right fix — I'm fairly sure it breaks the incremental path, and the xfail_streaming markers in this file hide it.

extract_intermediate_diff(curr, old) strips the common prefix and suffix. With old="" there's nothing to strip, so it returns curr unchanged — this line is just arguments_delta = cur_arguments_json.

That's a problem because partial_json_parser closes partial JSON for you. Mid-stream, the raw text {"city": "Dal re-serializes as {"city": "Dal"}, and that trailing "} never came from the model. Since streaming only appends, the next delta lands after it:

{"city": "Dal"} + las", "state": "TX   ->   {"city": "Dal"}las", "state": "TX

Cutting off that synthesized tail is what the [:index(...) + len(...)] truncation is for. extract_intermediate_diff gets away with it in the cur_arguments and prev_arguments branch below because prev_args_json has the same closers and they cancel as a common suffix — against "" there's nothing to cancel.

Repro, no tokenizer needed (realistic token boundaries for {"name": "get_weather", "parameters": {"city": "Dallas", "state": "TX"}}):

from vllm.tool_parsers.internlm2_tool_parser import Internlm2ToolParser

DELTAS = [
    "<|action_start|><|plugin|>", '{"', "name", '": "', "get_weather", '", "',
    "parameters", '": {"', "city", '": "', "Dallas", '", "', "state", '": "',
    "TX", '"}}', "<|action_end|>",
]

parser = Internlm2ToolParser(tokenizer=None, tools=[])
streamed, current = "", ""
for delta in DELTAS:
    previous, current = current, current + delta
    msg = parser.extract_tool_calls_streaming(
        previous_text=previous, current_text=current, delta_text=delta,
        previous_token_ids=[], current_token_ids=[], delta_token_ids=[],
        request=None,
    )
    if msg and msg.tool_calls and msg.tool_calls[0].function:
        streamed += msg.tool_calls[0].function.arguments or ""

print(repr(streamed))

main gives '{"city": "Dallas", "state": "TX', a valid prefix that ensure_json closes correctly. This PR gives '{"city": ""}Dallas", "state": "TX'.

CI won't catch it: the streaming cases here are marked xfail_streaming, so the suite reports 9 passed, 16 xfailed either way.

What I think works — keep the truncation, and only send the value whole once it's actually complete:

match_start = cur_arguments_json.find(delta_text)
if match_start != -1:
    arguments_delta = cur_arguments_json[: match_start + len(delta_text)]
elif is_complete_json(parsable_arr):
    # arguments completed within this delta, so nothing will re-trigger
    # this branch: send them whole rather than dropping them
    arguments_delta = cur_arguments_json
else:
    # still partial and not locatable: wait for more text rather than
    # streaming the closing characters partial_json_parser appended
    return None

The else: return None keeps the current behaviour of not advancing prev_tool_call_arr, so a later delta retries the branch — that retry is why compact-JSON models work on main today.

I ran this: your single-delta case is fixed, the token stream above comes out byte-identical to main, and the suite still reports 9 passed, 16 xfailed. Same bug exists in jamba_tool_parser.py on the same lines; I'm fixing it there the same way.

You're completely right, and thank you for the thorough analysis and the tokenizer-free repro — that makes the failure obvious. My change drops the [:index(delta_text) + len(delta_text)] truncation, but that truncation is load-bearing: partial_json_parser closes the partial object, so mid-stream {"city": "Dal re-serializes to {"city": "Dal"} and the synthesized "} has to be cut before the next append, otherwise it lands inline as {"city": "Dal"}las", .... The cur_arguments and prev_arguments branch only gets away without it because prev_args_json carries the same closers and they cancel as a common suffix — against old="" there's nothing to cancel, exactly as you said. And yes, the xfail_streaming markers hid the regression from CI.

Your fix is the correct one: keep the truncation, find(delta_text), send whole only when the arguments are actually complete, and otherwise return None so a later delta retries the branch (which is what keeps the compact-JSON path working today).

Since you've already implemented and byte-verified this, and you're fixing the identical bug in jamba_tool_parser.py the same way, it's cleanest for both files to go together in your PR — please go ahead and include internlm2 there, and I'll close this one in favor of it. Happy to review/test if that helps. Thanks again for catching that my patch traded one bug for a subtler one.

Thanks, folded the InternLM2 fix into #48852 alongside jamba, same approach (keeps the truncation, str.find, sends the arguments whole once complete, otherwise waits). Feel free to review there.

Confirmed — #48852 carries the InternLM2 fix (str.find, truncation kept, whole arguments once complete, return None otherwise), so closing this as promised in favour of it. Thanks again for catching that my patch traded one bug for a subtler one, and for doing the work to fix both parsers properly.

…lized JSON

Same fix as jamba: use str.find, send arguments whole once complete, and
otherwise wait, so the load-bearing truncation is kept and a single-delta
arguments payload is not dropped. Supersedes vllm-project#48755.
