Purpose

Removes an extra Inductor-generated reshape/copy kernel, by reworking Qwen GDN _output_projection method. RMSNormGated logic now directly produces the flattened [num_tokens, hidden] tensor consumed by out_proj which allows Inductor to pick.

Test Plan

Run existing RMSNormGated tests, performance benchmark and GSM8K accuracy tests

Test Result

> python3 -m pytest tests/kernels/test_fla_layernorm_guard.py::test_rmsnorm_gated_forward_native_dtype -q
# 216 passed, 16 warnings in 66.41s

Serving benchmark on amd/Qwen3.8-2.4T-A95B-Quark-MXFP4, 8x MI355X, TP8, fixed input/output lengths (--random-range-ratio 0), one run per point, measured against a stock build of the same commit.

ISL OSL Conc Output tok/s Mean TPOT (ms)
1024 1024 4 250.6 → 252.7 (+0.8%) 15.66 → 15.53 (-0.8%)
1024 1024 16 674.0 → 677.1 (+0.5%) 22.95 → 22.84 (-0.5%)
1024 1024 64 1,560.7 → 1,566.3 (+0.4%) 38.82 → 38.67 (-0.4%)

The change removes a small number of kernel launches per GDN layer per step, so the serving-level effect is under 1% as expected; the kernel-level evidence is the decode trace above.

GSM8K, 5-shot, seed 4321, batch_size=128:

Run flexible-extract strict-match
Stock (main) 0.9318 ± 0.0069 0.9333 ± 0.0069
This PR 0.9454 ± 0.0063 0.9462 ± 0.0062

No accuracy regression.

I also validated manually with profiler traces on Qwen3.5-397B that the extra GDN output reshape/copy kernel is now removed.

Sorry for the noise here. I accidentally pushed a bad rebase/merge state while trying to sync this branch with main, which caused the huge diff and triggered the extra reviewers/labels. I’ve cleaned up the branch now, but unfortunately I can’t undo the notifications that were already sent 🙇

Oh, does this still depend on an AITER bump, @mjkvaak-amd? I thought that this should be merged, but then I started thinking about that.

The output projection flattened its per-head tensors to (N*H, D) to
normalise, then reshaped back through (N, H, D) to reach the (N, H*D)
out_proj consumes. Inductor materialised that round trip as its own
pointwise kernel, one per GDN layer per forward. Every caller already
passes (N, H, D), so normalise as-is and flatten once. forward_xpu and
forward_cpu now share the existing _output_projection helper.

That alone breaks the AITER RMSNorm+quant fusion for GDN models with an
FP8 block-scaled out_proj. The pattern matches on op structure rather
than rank, so it still matches from (N, H, D) and then hands a 3D tensor
to a fused op that takes (M, D), failing compilation. Collapse the heads
in the replacement instead. Where quant_fp8 is decomposed, the quant's
group reshape back to (N, H, D) is additionally a no-op that the
compiler drops, so that case needs its own pattern variant traced with
the node removed. Cover both layouts and both quant_fp8 modes in the
fusion test.

I found a bug in the fusion pass of RMSNorm with 3D layout + quant_fp8 and force-pushed the change on the branch: the two previous commits are replaced by a single one, e0ae89d.

Changes:

  • _output_projection now normalises on the per-head (N, H, D) tensors as the callers already pass them, and flattens once for out_proj. All four of forward_hip, forward_cuda, forward_xpu and forward_cpu allocate that shape already.

  • When quant_fp8 is decomposed rather than run as a custom op, the quant's group reshape back to (N, H, D) is a no-op that the compiler drops. That configuration now gets its own pattern variant, traced with remove_noop_reshapes stripping the reshape ops.

  • test_aiter_fusion_rmsnorm_gated_quant scope expanded and is now parametrized over both per-head layouts and both quant_fp8 modes. In my earlier commit the four (N, H, D) cases fail: the two +quant_fp8 ones raise InductorError, the two -quant_fp8 ones match zero patterns. Suite is 75 passed, 24 skipped.

The trace, serving sweep and GSM8K results in the description are unchanged and still describe this code

@dllehr-amd apologies for invalidating the CI run on 2ec6d92 — please re-trigger whenever convenient. Would be great if you can also remove the stale labels from my bad rebase in August (rust, cohere, multi-modality, kv-connector and friends could be dropped); I can't remove them myself.

Oh, does this still depend on an AITER bump, @mjkvaak-amd? I thought that this should be merged, but then I started thinking about that.

No AITER bump is needed. I marked this a draft, because I found a problem with RMSNorm and quant_fp8 fusion that I hadn't previously thought of: the details of this are in my answer to Doug above. It's now fixed and I reopened the PR for review.

Guard the (N, H, D) GDN output-norm path against a flatten-to-2D
regression, including a non-contiguous per-head z view, and lock the
helper's (N, H*D) contract.

@dllehr-amd : Regarding our discussion and your recommendation to check whether the suggested changes affect CUDA detrimentally. CUDA is affected, but nothing breaks. _output_projection is platform-neutral so the NVIDIA path now runs RMSNormGated on a 3D (N, H, D) tensor too. Despite the [ROCm] tag, this is a change to shared model code. The 3D layout does not break any 2D fusion on the CUDA side, and CUDA actually gets the same win this PR claims for ROCm.

  • Fusions: MatcherRMSNormGated is referenced only by vllm/compilation/passes/fusion/rocm_aiter_fusion.py. The platform-neutral RMSNormQuantFusionPass only has non-gated patterns and none of them include the SiLU gate, so they could not have matched the GDN output norm before the change either.

  • Output shape: out_proj still receives exactly the same 2D (N, H*D) tensor, because flatten(-2) on the 3D norm output produces it directly instead of via the removed reshape round trip.

✅ @mjkvaak-amd, CI is now available for this PR.

  • /ci run starts upstream CI; /amd-ci run starts AMD CI only.
  • Your branch must contain every commit currently on its upstream target branch. Merge or rebase onto the latest target branch, then rerun the command. Append --allow-stale to a run command to test an outdated branch at your own risk.
  • /ci retry retries failed jobs in the CI build for the current PR head. If the current head has no CI build, it starts a new CI build for the current head containing only jobs that failed in the latest earlier CI build for this PR.
  • /amd-ci retry retries failed jobs in AMD CI for the current PR head. Use /amd-ci run when the current head has no AMD CI build.
  • /ci cancel cancels scheduled or running CI builds for this PR branch; /amd-ci cancel does the same for AMD CI only.

The opaque AITER quant path preserves a BF16 intermediate before FP8
quantization, while the fused kernel normalizes and quantizes directly.
Use a slightly wider tolerance for that mode to account for the expected
rounding difference after the FP8 GEMM.
