Fixes #47504.

Purpose

Fix GLM tool calling with tool_choice="required" so native XML/structural-tag tool parsers are not forced into the generic JSON structured-output path.

What changed

  • Skip generic required/named tool-choice JSON schema injection when a tool parser declares supports_required_and_named=False.
  • Add GLM regression coverage for both Chat Completions and Responses required tool-choice requests.

Why this is not duplicating an existing PR

I checked the issue page and searched open PRs for 47504, GLM required structured_outputs ToolParser, supports_required_and_named required GLM, and tool_choice=required glm47. I did not find an open PR covering this fix.

Tests run and results

  • python -m py_compile vllm/tool_parsers/abstract_tool_parser.py tests/tool_parsers/test_glm4_moe_tool_parser.py
  • git diff --check
  • python -m pytest tests/tool_parsers/test_glm4_moe_tool_parser.py tests/tool_use/test_gemma4_responses_adjust_request.py -q

Result: 16 passed.

Skip the generic required/named tool-choice JSON schema for parsers that declare supports_required_and_named=False. Those parsers emit native tool-call formats and should be parsed by their own parser instead of being forced into the standard JSON format.

Add GLM regression coverage for Chat Completions and Responses required tool-choice requests so the parser keeps its native XML tool-call path.

…parsers

With VLLM_ENFORCE_STRICT_TOOL_CALLING=0 no structural tag is attached, so
for tool_choice="required" or a named tool the base adjust_request forced
JSON guided decoding. Parsers with supports_required_and_named=False (e.g.
glm47) extract those calls with their native parser, found no call in the
JSON output, and returned it as content. This regressed in vllm-project#45915.

Return before the JSON-schema fallback for such parsers regardless of
tool_choice (get_json_schema_from_tools only produces a schema for
required/named), and move the tests to test_structural_tag_registry.py,
covering required and named on Chat Completions and Responses plus GLM-4.7
through DelegatingParser with strict tool calling off.

✅ @hubunt, CI is now available for this PR.

  • /ci run starts upstream CI; /amd-ci run starts AMD CI only.
  • Your branch must contain every commit currently on its upstream target branch. Merge or rebase onto the latest target branch, then rerun the command. Append --allow-stale to a run command to test an outdated branch at your own risk.
  • /ci retry retries failed jobs in the CI build for the current PR head. If the current head has no CI build, it starts a new CI build for the current head containing only jobs that failed in the latest earlier CI build for this PR.
  • /amd-ci retry retries failed jobs in AMD CI for the current PR head. Use /amd-ci run when the current head has no AMD CI build.
  • /ci cancel cancels scheduled or running CI builds for this PR branch; /amd-ci cancel does the same for AMD CI only.
