Could you also add an end-to-end (E2E) test for this?
|
i added test_single_chat_session_image_chat_completions_format in tests/entrypoints/multimodal/openai/responses/test_image.py. It drives the chat-completions image shape (nested image_url + omitted detail) through a live server and asserts a valid response. Test with Qwen/Qwen2.5-VL-3B-Instruct Is this the kind of E2E coverage procedure vLLM had in mind? |

You can see that the E2E test above already supports "type": "input_image".
Could you look into how it is supported? I don’t think handling this in protocol.py is very clear.

I have attempted to trace it to the best of my abilities. input_image is parsed in chat_utils.py (MM_PARSER_MAP["input_image"] → _ResponsesInputImageParser → mm_parser.parse_image). That parser is TypeAdapter(ResponseInputImageParam), and the type is a TypedDict with detail: Required and image_url: Optional[str] (flat string).
my understanding is that the chat-completions shape (nested image_url={"url": ...}, no detail) is rejected at ResponsesRequest validation, before chat_utils runs (_ResponsesInputImageParser rejects it too). That's why the normalization has to sit at the request-validation layer rather than in the image parser.
to make image normalization more clear, I pulled it out into a named _normalize_chat_completions_image_parts helper so the intent is explicit.

Doesn't this PR already support it?
@chaunceyjiang , my understanding is , #20975 added image support to /v1/responses only for the flat Responses shape (image_url as a string + required detail). This PR (#46631) is about the chat-completions shape users carry over from /v1/chat/completions: nested image_url={"url": X} . That payload seem to be rejected at ResponsesRequest validation before #20975's code runs. |

Hi! Thanks again for working on this. I originally reported issue #46631 and I've been following this PR closely. I tried applying the proposed changes locally while testing against the current vLLM release. Unfortunately, I'm still able to reproduce the validation error on /v1/responses, so I suspect there may be another related issue in addition to what's addressed here. Would it be possible for someone to take a look at this PR? I'm happy to test any updated changes or provide additional information if it helps. |

will likely close #32685 by defaulting to detail: auto |

This PR doesn't have CI running yet — pre-run-check gates on the ready/verified label or 4+ merged PRs, and this is my first vLLM contribution. Could a maintainer add the ready label to trigger the test suite? |
…ponses (vllm-project#46631) vllm-project#57241 defaults the missing `detail` on input_image parts, but the chat-completions image shapes still fail validation on /v1/responses: the `image_url` part type and the nested `image_url: {"url": ...}` object. Extend the same BeforeValidator to normalize both to the flat ResponseInputImageParam schema, so an identical image payload works on both endpoints. Signed-off-by: Alex-Wengg <hanweng9@gmail.com>

@chaunceyjiang @bbrowning i rebased onto #57241, which fixed the detail default. This PR now only adds the remaining chat-completions image shapes (the image_url part type and nested image_url: {"url": ...}) to the same validator, which fixes #46631. It's a first-time contribution so CI is gated, could someone add the ready label? |
Summary
Fixes #46631. Multimodal image inputs that work on
/v1/chat/completionsstill fail on/v1/responses.#57241 fixed the missing
detaildefault. The chat-completions image shapes still fail validation:"type": "image_url"instead of"input_image"image_url: {"url": X}instead of the flatimage_url: Xstring thatResponseInputImageParamexpectsFix
Extend #57241's
BeforeValidator(renamed_normalize_input_images) so it also mapsimage_url→input_imageand flattens{"url": X}→X. Now the same image payload works on both endpoints.Test
test_input_image_accepts_chat_completions_format(both part types): fails onmain, passes with this fix.
