@BugenZhao @njhill, would this Rust frontend parity change still be useful? I’m happy to rebase it onto current main and address any review feedback if you’d like to proceed. |

In `@rust/src/server/src/routes/inference/generative_scoring.rs`:
- Around line 111-116: Bound the number of text requests before prompt
construction and before the try_join_all call in the generative scoring route,
using a server-configured maximum item count. Reject inputs exceeding that limit
with the existing validation/error path, while preserving normal processing for
permitted counts.
- Line 200: Prevent generative scoring requests from being used with speculative
decoding until RejectionSampler correctly handles retained logprob_token_ids and
full logprobs. Update the TextRequest construction around logprob_token_ids so
speculative batches cannot reach the incompatible Sampler and
_get_logprobs_tensors path, while preserving existing behavior for
non-speculative requests.

Overview
Adds Rust frontend support for
/generative_scoring, closing an API parity gap tracked in #44280. Rebased ontomainatfe51194e2d.Claims
item_first,add_special_tokens, and softmax or true-probability scoring, with the Python-compatible response and token usage shapemax_num_seqsbefore tokenization or request constructionValidation
Validation used the repository's pinned Rust 1.95 toolchain.
cargo-nextestwas unavailable locally, so the affected suites ran withcargo test. On macOS,TMPDIR=/tmpkeeps test IPC socket paths short.vllm-serversuitevllm-engine-core-clientsuite, including Python MessagePack compatibilityThe HTTP tests exercise request lowering, requested label logprobs, scoring, token usage, and both safety guards against a mock engine. No GPU-backed model evaluation was run for this refresh. The local test build reports existing warnings in
external_engine_openai_qwen.rsandproc-macro-error2; neither is changed by this PR.Details
The route reuses the raw generation path with one request per item,
max_tokens = 1, and restricted label-token logprobs. It adds no dependencies or sampler changes. The ready handshake reportsuse_spec_decodewith a default offalsein Rust; the Python engine supplies its actual value. This refresh preserves upstream's
effective_attention_block_sizehandshake field and fixture assertions alongside the speculative-decoding flag. It adapts scoring requests to the current typed reasoning options, leaving KV hints and the reasoning gate unset. The route remains generally available, while/inference/v1/generateretains upstream's scale-out gate.Current upstream has no Rust
/generative_scoringimplementation, and a fresh open-PR search found no duplicate route. #44727 addresses the sampler restriction and #59549 adds restricted logprobs to other Rust endpoints; neither implements this route. Existing generative-scoring API documentation is atdocs/serving/online_serving/generative_scoring.md.AI assistance was used to prepare the change and this rebase. Local validation results are listed above.
