LoRA names and cache_salt were both appended as bare strings into the
same extra_keys tuple, so a LoRA request with lora_name == X and no
cache_salt produced the same first-block hash as a base-model request
with cache_salt == X and no LoRA. That breaks cache_salt isolation and
can serve a base request a block computed under LoRA weights.
Tag each source ("lora", name) / ("cache_salt", salt) so the keys live
in separate namespaces and can no longer collide.

Same-name runtime LoRA reload (`/v1/load_lora_adapter` with `load_inplace=true`)
could reuse stale prefix-cache KV from the previous adapter: the block-hash key
identified a LoRA by `lora_name` only, and an in-place reload keeps the same
`lora_name` and `lora_int_id` while the adapter bytes change.
For a readable local adapter (absolute path), key the LoRA prefix-cache extra
keys on a content-derived identity: a digest of the selected weight file,
canonicalized `adapter_config.json`, and loader-affecting request fields. The
key is filled in the serving load path and as a backstop in
`InputProcessor.process_inputs` (before block hashes are computed); the extra
keys become `[("lora", name), ("lora_identity", identity)]` (domain-tagged to
stay compatible with vllm-project#44706) and `lora_int_id` is dropped from the key.
Out of scope -- path-only fallback, not content-versioned: Hugging Face Hub ids,
relative/remote paths, shared-nothing multi-node, tensorizer URIs, the TOCTOU
window between key computation and the worker's load, and external KV connectors.
An in-place reload from such a path logs a warning, since its prefix-cache blocks
are keyed by path only and a same-path content swap cannot be detected.
This partially addresses vllm-project#42125 (the serving, single-node, absolute-local-path
reproduction); it does not close the issue. Prior art: the `lora_cache_key` field
was first proposed in the self-closed vllm-project#42495.

Independent reproduction of #44701 on different hardware at a pinned release, plus one constraint I think the patch should state explicitly. Reproduction.
All four controls pass. The last row is the defect: a base-model request whose The 16 is not incidental — it is structural, and I think it is worth stating in the PR. It is exactly one block ( Eviction is ruled out by measurement, not assumption — the engine reported 48,265 GPU blocks = 772,240 KV tokens against a workload orders of magnitude smaller, so nothing was evicted between arms. One thing the patch does not currently say: the concatenation order is load-bearing. The order of the four lists is part of the key. Re-ordering them changes every resulting hash and silently invalidates the entire prefix cache. The fix needs to preserve order as well as add tags, and it may be worth a comment at the construction site — otherwise a later well-meaning tidy-up (sorting for determinism, say) reintroduces a much larger problem than the one being fixed here. On the two-source scope, since it is the obvious reviewer question. Tagging only A trivial process note: the title may need a And the actual blocker: this PR has had no human review in 54 days and CI has never run on it, because Disclosure: this analysis was produced with AI assistance. I reviewed every line, ran the reproduction on the hardware and version stated, and the numbers above come from a committed certificate rather than from a model. |
Per independent review on vllm-project#44706: the order of lora/mm/cache_salt/ prompt_embeds keys is part of the block hash, so a later reordering (e.g. sorting for determinism) would silently invalidate the entire prefix cache. Document the invariant at the construction site. Signed-off-by: Tai An <antai12232931@outlook.com>

Thank you @nickharris808 — that's a remarkably thorough independent reproduction, and the one-block blast-radius bound ( I've taken your load-bearing-order point directly (702a3eb): added a The remaining blocker is unchanged: 🤖 AI-assisted, human reviewed. |
State the invariant from RFC vllm-project#53194 as a parametrized suite: requests that differ in a partitioning dimension (cache_salt, LoRA identity, prompt_embeds content) must never reuse each other's KV blocks, and requests that agree must, so every negative arm has a positive control. Assertions are on what KVCacheManager hands back and on block-hash equality, never on the extra-key encoding, so the suite is independent of vllm-project#44706, vllm-project#51899 and vllm-project#52655 landing in any order. The cross-dimension case (cache_salt and lora_name with equal strings) reproduces vllm-project#44701 on current main and ships as a strict xfail pointing at vllm-project#51899, so it fails loudly the moment the fix lands. The coverage gate walks KVConnectorFactory's registry and fails on any connector that is neither exercised by the suite nor exempted with a written reason, so a new connector cannot skip declaring how it partitions the keyspace. Heads up: this will fail That test rebuilds the expected block hash itself and hard-codes the untagged salt shape in two places: # tests/v1/core/test_prefix_caching.py:1813

assert block_hashes[0] == sha256(
(kv_cache_utils.NONE_HASH, tuple(token_ids[:block_size]), ("salt2",))
)Both need to become I reached the same defect from an independent audit of The LoRA half looks clear against that suite: the LoRA test in (AI assistance was used for this analysis and to run the suite; I have reviewed it.) |

Thanks @Hotragn — that's a real gap, and a genuinely useful test run. Fixed in 6c79a6f. Both hand-rebuilt hashes in (kv_cache_utils.NONE_HASH, tuple(token_ids[:block_size]), (("cache_salt", "salt1"),))and the same for Also agree with your read on the LoRA half: the LoRA test asserts Appreciate you dropping your branch instead of opening a duplicate. |

test_cache_key_salting rebuilds the expected block hash by hand and hard-coded
the untagged `("salt1",)` / `("salt2",)` shape, so it fails once cache_salt is
domain-tagged. Both literals become `(("cache_salt", "salt1"),)` /
`(("cache_salt", "salt2"),)`.

Summary
generate_block_hash_extra_keysappends LoRA names andcache_saltinto the sameextra_keystuple as bare strings, with no domain separation:Because both are untagged single strings, a LoRA request with
lora_name == "X"and nocache_saltproduces the same first-block hash as a base-model request withcache_salt == "X"and no LoRA, for identical prompt tokens. Reported and dynamically reproduced in #44701.This is a correctness/isolation problem:
cache_saltexists specifically to isolate prefix-cache entries between callers. A LoRA adapter whose name equals someone's salt silently defeats that isolation.Fix
Domain-tag the two sources so their keys live in distinct namespaces and can no longer collide:
mm_extra_keysalready use(identifier, offset)tuples and prompt-embeds keys are rawbytes, so all four sources are now mutually distinguishable. The change is confined to key construction; hashing logic is untouched.Test plan
