[rollout, sglang] fix: support weight-update sessions with legacy fallback - #8562
SGLang 0.5.22 makes begin_weight_update and end_weight_update abstract engine methods. Both verl HTTP adapters currently fail to instantiate, and tensor updates need an explicit session. This implements the sync/async methods and brackets a complete weight transfer with one session.
The rollout checks the upstream EngineBase contract before sending session requests. SGLang 0.5.20 has neither method and keeps its existing request sequence. The session covers all tensor buckets and quantized finalization, or all delta flushes; only the server TP leader sends begin/end requests. If a transfer fails, cleanup is attempted without replacing the original error; cleanup failures are logged. If the transfer succeeds but session finalization fails, that error still propagates. LoRA adapter loads keep their existing behavior.
Both begin requests use a per-request max_attempts=1 override, preserving the original transport exception without retry or backoff. Other requests retain their existing retry behavior, and the shared adapter setting is not mutated. A failed begin leaves the server state uncertain; this change does not add automatic session reconciliation.
No dependency pins, Transformers requirements, or plugin-loading behavior change. This does not claim complete SGLang 0.5.22 compatibility; its Transformers requirement still conflicts with verl's current constraint.
Related #7108 adds an opt-in P2P/RDMA checkpoint backend and asynchronous control-plane methods. This change instead fixes both existing HTTP adapter classes and the existing bucketed/delta transfer lifecycle, with a legacy API fallback; it does not introduce P2P transport. The reviewed #7108 diff does not implement that lifecycle fix.
Test
Using the existing development environment with the SGLang 0.5.22 API; these tests require no accelerator, server, or model:
Current revision a2fc244d (metadata-only rewrite of tested 0722edbf; identical code): 43 passed in 26.01s (21 session/request cases, 22 unchanged existing LoRA cases). Eight new transport cases execute the real sync/async HTTP helpers with mocked network calls, covering timeout and connection errors for single-attempt begin and ordinary retried requests. The session cases cover six bucketed-update scenarios, begin failure, both legacy/new delta paths, LoRA exclusion, HTTP request parameters, and the two end-failure behaviors. The session tests model both legacy and session-capable EngineBase contracts and exercise real rollout methods with mocked transfers.
The existing test_http_server_engine.py suite was also rerun: 39 passed, 1 failed in 33.84s. The failure remains the previously confirmed test_make_request_http_error: its mocked HTTPError lacks a response, so existing error logging raises AttributeError. The same failure was previously reproduced with main's unmodified HTTP methods. That unrelated error-logging behavior and test remain unchanged.
Historical API-contract check on 2f7143c9: loaded the official v0.5.20 and v0.5.22 EngineBase sources, constructed both patched HTTP adapters, and exercised the session context. Both instantiate; v0.5.20 sends zero begin/end calls, v0.5.22 sends one pair. This is API-contract validation, not two complete installed-environment or training runs.
All pre-commit hooks passed for the four changed files, including ruff, formatting, mypy, generated-config verification, license, test layout, device API checks, and compilation:
The original constructor failure was separately reproduced on NVIDIA H20-3e with unmodified community verl b151d44 and SGLang 0.5.22, before this PR. That environment needed an explicit Transformers 5.19.0 dependency override. This PR was not validated with a complete H20 RL training run.
Historical H20 before/after validation (2f7143c9)
A same-environment H20-3e comparison of the PR parent 07ba1a85 and earlier PR revision 2f7143c9, with community SGLang 0.5.22, reproduced the constructor TypeError for both adapters before the change (exit 1). Both adapters instantiate after the change (exit 0), and all 42 session/LoRA regressions pass on that host (9.50s). Both runs successfully execute a CUDA tensor operation.
These H20 results belong to 2f7143c9; they are preserved as historical evidence, not relabeled as a run of the current revision. The cleanup-error changes, reduced session suite, and begin-request retry tests were validated locally; H20 was not rerun for this revision. This validates adapter construction and mocked-transfer session regressions, not a model server or full RL training. Both revisions used the same explicit Transformers 5.19.0 override; the dependency conflict is documented in the linked report.
API and Usage Example
No rollout configuration changes are required. Old SGLang uses the existing update sequence; a session-capable SGLang uses begin -> all weight buckets/finalization -> end.
Checklist Before Submitting
Read the contribution guide.
Run pre-commit hooks on changed files (not repository-wide --all-files).
Add regression tests and an explicit invocation in the SGLang CI workflow. The CPU-only job skips these tests when optional SGLang is absent.
Full GPU training / upstream CI validation.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
SGLang weight updates now use explicit begin-and-end sessions when supported, including for bucketed and delta-flush updates. This applies to synchronous and asynchronous requests and remains compatible with engines that do not support sessions.
Session-start requests are attempted once; other requests retain their configured retry behavior.
Bug Fixes
Transfer errors remain visible if session cleanup also fails. An end-session error is reported when the update succeeds.
Tests
Added CPU-only coverage for session behavior, error cases, and compatibility scenarios.
The SGLang HTTP adapters now expose weight-update session requests with per-request retry limits. The rollout uses sessions for eligible bucketed and delta-flush updates. CPU-only tests cover session behavior and edge cases, and the SGLang workflow runs those tests.

Summary
HTTP session requests and retries verl/workers/rollout/sglang_rollout/http_server_engine.py, tests/workers/rollout/rollout_sglang/test_weight_update_session_on_cpu.py
Both HTTP adapters add methods to begin and end weight-update sessions. Begin requests use one attempt; other requests retain the configured retry behavior. Tests cover synchronous and asynchronous requests.
Session lifecycle and weight updates verl/workers/rollout/sglang_rollout/sglang_rollout.py, tests/workers/rollout/rollout_sglang/test_weight_update_session_on_cpu.py, .github/workflows/sgl.yml
Eligible bucketed and delta-flush updates run inside a session. Tests cover engine and rank conditions, transfer and cleanup errors, quantized finalization, and LoRA updates without base-weight sessions. The workflow runs the CPU compatibility test.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states that SGLang 0.5.22 makes begin_weight_update and end_weight_update abstract, which breaks both verl HTTP adapters. It says the PR implements the sync and async methods and brackets a weight transfer with one session. It also lists the tests and the files changed. This matches the changeset, which adds session methods to HttpServerAdapter and AsyncHttpServerAdapter, adds session logic in sglang_rollout.py, adds CPU tests, and adds a CI workflow step.

Current PR head: a2fc244d6bf4d505ec643683e86d386a9bafbaa2. This is a metadata-only rewrite of 0722edbf with an identical source tree; author and committer both identify chenxb002. The table below distinguishes validation of the current revision from the historical H20 run. H20 was tested at 2f7143c9; the later cleanup-error, test-suite, and request-retry changes were tested locally, not rerun on H20.
Historical H20 result at 2f7143c9: both adapters instantiated and 42 tests passed in 9.50s (exit 0). Both historical revisions used the same H20 virtual environment, differing only in their verl source import paths, and both executed a CUDA tensor operation successfully (CUDA tensor check: 2.0). The original logs are preserved below.
Historical H20 environment: Python 3.12.12, PyTorch 2.14.1, CUDA 13.0, SGLang 0.5.22, Transformers 5.19.0. GPU driver: 610.43.02. The installed verl package metadata is 0.10.0.dev0 for both runs; the logs identify the actual before/after source paths.
Scope: real adapter construction on H20, plus regression tests with mocked transfers. The legacy/session-capable branches are exercised by unit-test fixtures; this is not a full installed SGLang 0.5.20/0.5.22 matrix. No model server, real weight transfer, or full RL training was run.
Dependency caveat: Transformers 5.19.0 satisfies SGLang 0.5.22 but conflicts with verl's declared <5.17 constraint. Both revisions use that same explicitly overridden environment. No dependency versions were changed between the runs, and this PR does not modify those requirements. The pip check output is included below.
H20 commands and reproducer
The historical H20 run used git archive snapshots of 07ba1a85 and 2f7143c9. The checkout command below now targets current PR head a2fc244d for reproduction; it has not been rerun on H20. ======================= 42 passed, 20 warnings in 9.50s ========================
Updated via a single amended commit: 6b38f08d25dd5e18be82f0c517d19771c34231b2.
Reduced the session suite from 20 cases to 13 focused cases; the existing 22 LoRA cases are unchanged.
Both non-leader cases run the real bucket loop and assert full generator consumption. The transfer failure occurs in the second bucket.
Preserve the original transfer error when end_weight_update also fails, logging the cleanup traceback. Propagate end_weight_update failure when the transfer itself succeeds.
Retain the explicit SGLang CI invocation and the distinction between capability fixtures and complete installed environments.
Validation: 35 passed in 26.56s; all pre-commit hooks passed for the four PR files. This validation ran in the existing local development environment, not H20. The historical H20 logs above and their 42-test result refer specifically to 2f7143c9.

Begin-request retry review follow-up (0722edbf)
The sync and async helpers now accept a keyword-only per-request attempt limit. Both begin_weight_update methods pass max_attempts=1; timeout and connection failures propagate unchanged, without retry or sleep. Other requests retain their existing retry behavior, and self.max_attempts is not temporarily modified. Begin failure still does not trigger an automatic end: a lost response leaves server state uncertain, and session ownership/reconciliation is outside this change.
The v0.5.22 scheduler rejects a repeated begin while a session is open, and its HTTP endpoint maps that rejection to HTTP 400. This confirms the version-specific concern raised in the review. Docstrings were added to the session regression functions and helper callbacks.
Current local results: 43 passed in 26.01s (21 session/request tests + 22 existing LoRA tests); all changed-file pre-commit hooks passed. The existing HTTP adapter suite separately reports 39 passed, 1 known pre-existing failure in 33.84s (test_make_request_http_error, missing mock HTTPError.response). No new H20 run was performed.

- Line 357: Update the begin_weight_update request path using _make_request so
it is sent only once rather than retried after a timeout or connection error;
preserve generic retry behavior for other requests. Apply the same constraint to
_make_async_request if it also handles begin_weight_update, without assuming the
server’s behavior after an uncertain response.

What does this PR do?
SGLang 0.5.22 makes
begin_weight_updateandend_weight_updateabstract engine methods.
Both begin requests use a per-request
max_attempts=1override, preserving the original transport exception without retry or backoff.
Checklist Before Starting
Related #7108 adds an opt-in P2P/RDMA checkpoint backend and asynchronous control-plane methods. This change instead fixes both existing HTTP adapter classes and the existing bucketed/delta transfer lifecycle, with a legacy API fallback; it does not introduce P2P transport. The reviewed #7108 diff does not implement that lifecycle fix.
Test
Using the existing development environment with the SGLang 0.5.22 API; these tests require no accelerator, server, or model:
Current revision
a2fc244d(metadata-only rewrite of tested0722edbf; identical code): 43 passed in 26.01s (21 session/request cases, 22 unchanged existing LoRA cases). The existing
test_http_server_engine.pysuite was also rerun: 39 passed, 1 failed in 33.84s. The failure remains the previously confirmedtest_make_request_http_error: its mocked HTTPError lacks a response, so existing error logging raises AttributeError. The same failure was previously reproduced with main's unmodified HTTP methods. That unrelated error-logging behavior and test remain unchanged.Historical API-contract check on
2f7143c9: loaded the official v0.5.20 and v0.5.22 EngineBase sources, constructed both patched HTTP adapters, and exercised the session context.
Historical H20 before/after validation (
2f7143c9)A same-environment H20-3e comparison of the PR parent
07ba1a85and earlier PR revision2f7143c9, with community SGLang 0.5.22, reproduced the constructor TypeError for both adapters before the change (exit 1). Both adapters instantiate after the change (exit 0), and all 42 session/LoRA regressions pass on that host (9.50s). Both runs successfully execute a CUDA tensor operation.Exact commands, reproducer, complete failure/success logs, and frozen dependencies.
These H20 results belong to
2f7143c9; they are preserved as historical evidence, not relabeled as a run of the current revision. The cleanup-error changes, reduced session suite, and begin-request retry tests were validated locally; H20 was not rerun for this revision. This validates adapter construction and mocked-transfer session regressions, not a model server or full RL training. Both revisions used the same explicit Transformers 5.19.0 override; the dependency conflict is documented in the linked report.API and Usage Example
No rollout configuration changes are required. Old SGLang uses the existing update sequence; a session-capable SGLang uses
begin -> all weight buckets/finalization -> end.Checklist Before Submitting
