**Action:**
Prefer pre-compiled `PATTERN.search(text)` over Python `any(...)` generator guards for numeric/decimal checks in `translate_line`.

## 2026-10-03 - ASCII Trie Character Class Expansion vs Unicode `re.IGNORECASE` Overhead
**Learning:**
Compiling Trie-structured regular expressions with the `re.IGNORECASE` flag in Python forces the regex engine to perform Unicode case-folding table lookups on every single character comparison across string scanning operations. By expanding alphabetic characters into ASCII case character classes (`[aA]`, `[bB]`) directly within Trie regex node generation, case matching is executed via direct ASCII byte comparisons in C-level regex automaton state transitions. Removing `re.IGNORECASE` reduced document compilation latency by ~20% and PhaseCodec surface transformations by ~21-25%. Additionally, extracting top-level callback functions (`_replace_leet_default`) for default probability configurations in `to_1337speak()` eliminated inner function closure allocations during high-frequency surface codec invocations.

**Action:**
In high-performance regex matching pipelines over ASCII technical documents, compile explicit character class branches into Trie regex builders and omit `re.IGNORECASE` flags to delegate case matching directly to automaton state transitions.
