Preserve containing type names and their generic arguments in TUnit0001 method-data-source diagnostics, including types nested inside arrays and generic arguments. This distinguishes Outer<string>.D from Outer.D without changing binding decisions.

Adds seven message regressions for delegates, classes, and multiple containing levels; updates existing nested fixture expectations.

Validation: dotnet test --project tests/TUnit.Analyzers.Tests --framework net10.0 passed (1,071 passed, one skipped). Existing build warnings are tracked in #7410, #7412, and #7428; the analyzer restore occurrence was added to #7412.

Closes #7534

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Type names in data-source diagnostics now display with their containing types, making nested and otherwise ambiguous types easier to identify.
    • Diagnostics involving tuple array elements now show fully qualified type names for clearer error messages.

Walkthrough

The analyzer now uses a dedicated format for types in wrong-argument diagnostics. Tests check displays for nested types and update an existing fixture expectation.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Preserve containing generic types in TUnit0001 diagnostics" matches the main change. The PR keeps containing type names and generic arguments in TUnit0001 method-data-source diagnostics. The raw summary shows the analyzer switching to a new SymbolDisplayFormat for data-source diagnostics, and a new test class checks nested generic, delegate, class, and array types. The title is short, specific, and in one sentence.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7534 has coding requirements only, and it is the sole directly linked target. The reviewed head meets each acceptance criterion from the diff and test source:

  1. Containing type names and generic arguments are retained [#7534]. src/TUnit.Analyzers/TestDataAnalyzer.cs adds TestDataTypeDisplayFormat with SymbolDisplayTypeQualificationStyle.NameAndContainingTypes. It keeps the generic, member, parameter, and miscellaneous options of MinimallyQualifiedFormat. The four WrongArgumentTypeTestData call sites in CheckMethodDataSource now use this format instead of MinimallyQualifiedFormat. Array element and generic argument types are formatted through the same format, so nested types inside arrays and generic arguments also keep their containing types.
  2. Regressions for delegates, classes, and multiple containing levels [#7534]. tests/TUnit.Analyzers.Tests/NestedTypeDiagnosticDisplayTests.cs adds MethodDataSourcePreservesContainingTypes with seven cases. They cover Outer<string>.D vs Outer<object>.D, nested classes, Outer<string>.Middle<int>.D vs Outer<object>.Middle<long>.D, arrays of generic interfaces, and arrays of nested delegates. Each case asserts the differing containing constructions in the diagnostic arguments.
  3. Existing acceptance and rejection behavior is unchanged [#7534]. The diff changes only the ToDisplayString format argument. No binding or filtering logic changes. GenericTupleArrayMethodDataSourceTests.TupleArrayElements changes its expected arguments from Fixture to C.Fixture. This update follows from the new display and is not a behavior change.

Limit: I did not re-run the test suite. The PR description reports a passing run of tests/TUnit.Analyzers.Tests (1,071 passed, one skipped). The exact Roslyn output for the new format is inferred from the source and the expected strings, not from an execution result.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed files relate to #7534 and support its display objective:

  • src/TUnit.Analyzers/TestDataAnalyzer.cs: adds the display format and applies it only at the four WrongArgumentTypeTestData message sites. Nothing else in the analyzer changes.
  • tests/TUnit.Analyzers.Tests/NestedTypeDiagnosticDisplayTests.cs: new regression tests for the requested nested delegate, nested class, and multi-level containing cases.
  • tests/TUnit.Analyzers.Tests/GenericTupleArrayMethodDataSourceTests.cs: one expectation update. The fully qualified C.Fixture name is the expected result of the new display format.

The PR description mentions an optional reporting-helper refactor and broader display-format reuse. The diff does not include either change. No unrelated change is present.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 3 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Review

The change is small and correct. I found no blocking issues.

  • A single static TestDataTypeDisplayFormat replaces the four duplicated MinimallyQualifiedFormat calls. It switches only typeQualificationStyle to NameAndContainingTypes and takes every other option from MinimallyQualifiedFormat. That keeps the change narrow: Outer<string>.D and Outer.D now render differently, and binding logic is untouched.
  • The seven new regression cases cover delegates, classes, multiple containing levels, arrays and generic arguments. The updated C.Fixture expectation matches the new output.
  • Optional: the four CheckMethodDataSource report sites still repeat the string.Join(...Select(...)) pair. A small ReportWrongArgumentType(context, attribute, unwrapped, parameters) helper would remove that and keep future format changes in one place. This isn't needed for this PR.
  • Optional: other ToDisplayString(MinimallyQualifiedFormat) uses in TestDataAnalyzer can still show ambiguous nested types. If the same ambiguity matters there, reuse this format. That could be a follow-up.

Looks good to merge once CI is green.

Reviewed all review surfaces for bc23bce. Claude and Codex report no blocking findings; no inline threads exist. Keeping the optional reporting-helper refactor and broader display-format reuse outside this focused diagnostic fix: neither identifies a concrete additional defect. Promoting the approved head to ready for CI and the ready-event Claude review.

Review

The change is small and correct. A dedicated SymbolDisplayFormat with NameAndContainingTypes keeps the containing types and their generic arguments, so Outer<string>.D and Outer.D now render differently. Binding decisions are untouched, since only the diagnostic message arguments change.

  • The format copies generics, member, parameter and miscellaneous options from MinimallyQualifiedFormat. Keyword types like int and nullable annotations therefore render as before.
  • The static format is cached, so there is no per-call allocation.
  • The seven new regressions cover delegates, classes, multi-level nesting and arrays/generic arguments. The existing GenericTupleArrayMethodDataSourceTests expectation (C.Fixture) was updated to match.

Suggestions, none blocking:

  1. The same MinimallyQualifiedFormat message pattern is repeated four times in CheckMethodDataSource. A small helper such as FormatTypes(IEnumerable<ITypeSymbol?>) would remove the duplication and keep future callers on the same format.
  2. Other TUnit0001 call sites may still use MinimallyQualifiedFormat for nested types (for example [Arguments] checks). It's worth a quick grep to confirm the messages are consistent.

I haven't run the tests myself. The PR reports the analyzer test project passing. Approving from a design standpoint.

Add coverage for the matching-arity conversion diagnostic.

The new cases exercise only the tuple-arity report. Add a MethodDataSource case where Row() returns (int, Outer<string>.D) and the test method has two parameters, including Outer.D. The tuple arities then match, while the nested delegate types are incompatible, so the conversion-failure report at TestDataAnalyzer.cs:673-679 is reached. Assert int, Outer<string>.D and int, Outer.D. This regression would detect reverting that formatter without asserting a current implementation failure.
