fix(engine): stop copying build-time output to TestSessionContext - #7397
TestBuilder copied all build-time output (data source construction) into TestSessionContext.Current.OutputWriter/ErrorOutputWriter. No reporter, logger, TRX, JUnit or HTML path reads session-level output, so the copy was never shown. It also kept every test's build output in memory for the whole session.
The issue offered two options: report the session copy, or stop collecting it. This PR stops collecting it:
Build output is already reported per test through SetBuildTimeOutput. A SharedType.PerTestSession factory runs once, in whichever test's build wins the Lazy<T> race, so its output is reported exactly once, on that test. That is visible in the console, TRX, JUnit and HTML.
Reporting the session copy would have duplicated every test's build output in a session section, because the copy was a superset of all build output for every sharing type.
Behaviour change: TestSessionContext.Current.GetStandardOutput() / GetErrorOutput() no longer contain data-source build output. Session hook output still lands there. This is not a public API change.
Tests
TestBuildContextOutputCaptureTests (from #5072) asserted that the shared fixture's constructor output appears in the session output. They now assert that:
the session output does not contain it, and
the output appears on exactly one of the two tests that share the fixture. Test_SharedDataSource_SecondTest uses [DependsOn] and Dependencies.GetTests(...) to read the first test's output, so the check doesn't depend on which test wins the race.
Validation
dotnet test -f net10.0 --treenode-filter '/*/*/TestBuildContextOutputCaptureTests/*': 7/7 pass in source-generated mode and with --reflection.
Without the engine change, Test_SharedDataSource_FirstTest fails, as expected.
TUnit.Engine.Tests were not run locally, per AGENTS.md; CI covers them.
Build-time output and error output are now associated with test contexts instead of the shared test session. For shared data sources, the output is recorded with the test that triggers construction, whichever test wins the construction race. This keeps captured output tied to the relevant test and avoids presenting it as session-wide output.
)
No reporter reads session-level output, so the copy was never shown and
kept every test's build output alive for the whole session. Build output
stays on the tests built with it; a PerTestSession fixture's output is
reported once, on the test whose build constructed it.

Walkthrough
Build-time output and error output are no longer copied to TestSessionContext. TestBuilder continues to assign them to test contexts. Shared-data-source tests check that the session context remains empty and that exactly one test context contains the constructor output.
Changes: Build-time output routing

Summary
Output routing and shared-data-source tests src/TUnit.Engine/Building/TestBuilder.cs, tests/TUnit.TestProject/TestBuildContextOutputCaptureTests.cs
TestBuilder no longer writes build-time output or error output to TestSessionContext. The tests check that the session context is empty and exactly one test context contains the shared data source's constructor output.
Diagnostics from empty data sources can be lost, reducing troubleshooting information in this supported workflow.

Explanation
Issue #7297 is the only direct linked issue. It asks that build-time output be either shown at session end or no longer collected, if per-test routing is enough. The PR chooses the second option. The diff in src/TUnit.Engine/Building/TestBuilder.cs removes the two writes to TestSessionContext.Current.OutputWriter and ErrorOutputWriter. The per-test SetBuildTimeOutput loop is unchanged, so build output stays on the tests of the winning batch. The issue states that this per-test routing already exists. The updated tests in tests/TUnit.TestProject/TestBuildContextOutputCaptureTests.cs cover the new behaviour. Test_SharedDataSource_FirstTest asserts that the session output omits the constructor output. Test_SharedDataSource_SecondTest asserts that exactly one of the two sharing tests holds the output. The issue's coding requirement is met. No non-coding task applies.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff against the merge base 13ee2f3 touches two files. src/TUnit.Engine/Building/TestBuilder.cs removes the session-level copy of build output and adds a comment that explains the change. tests/TUnit.TestProject/TestBuildContextOutputCaptureTests.cs updates the assertions and comments for the shared data source tests. Both changes connect directly to #7297. No unrelated code changes appear in the reviewed diff. The public API is not changed, as the summary states. The change does alter the observable content of TestSessionContext.GetStandardOutput() and GetErrorOutput(). That change is the intended outcome of option two in #7297. Residual uncertainty: TUnit.Engine.Tests were not run, so any other test that reads session-level data-source output is not verified here. This uncertainty does not show an out-of-scope change.

A rabbit watched the output flow, To test contexts it now will go. The session stays without a trace, One test holds the message in its place. The rabbit hops and checks it twice.
Looks good. The change is small and focused: it removes the copy of data-source build output into TestSessionContext. That copy was never displayed, and it kept every test's build output in memory for the whole session.
I grepped src for readers of session-level GetStandardOutput, GetErrorOutput and OutputWriter on TestSessionContext and found none. That matches the PR's claim that no reporter consumes it.
Per-test reporting through SetBuildTimeOutput is unchanged. A PerTestSession factory's output still lands on exactly one test, so nothing is lost or duplicated.
The updated tests no longer rely on build order. [DependsOn] plus Dependencies.GetTests checks that the output appears on exactly one of the two tests, and that the session output doesn't contain it.
Minor note: TestSessionContext.GetStandardOutput() no longer contains build output, which is a behaviour change for anyone who relied on it. The PR description already states this, so a release-notes mention would be enough.
I haven't run the tests. I'm relying on the PR's reported 7/7 pass in both modes and on CI.
Review: stop copying build-time output to TestSessionContext
The change is small and does what the description says. It removes a copy that no reporter reads. That copy also kept every test's build output in memory for the whole session. Per-test reporting through SetBuildTimeOutput is unchanged. I found no blocking issues.
Tests: The rewritten TestBuildContextOutputCaptureTests assert the right thing. The session output must not contain the fixture output, and exactly one of the two sharing tests must carry it. Adding [DependsOn] so the second test can read the first test's context is a sound way to avoid depending on which test wins the Lazy<T> race.
Things to consider (non-blocking):
The PerTestSession output now lives on whichever test wins the race. If that test is filtered out, skipped, or fails before it reports, the output is lost with no session-level fallback. That is acceptable given the stated trade-off, but a one-line note in the docs or release notes would help. It is a visible change for anyone who used TestSessionContext.Current.GetStandardOutput() to observe build output.
If you ever want a session-level view, build it as an explicit reporter feature, not by implicitly duplicating writes. The same shape would apply: attribute the output once and have the reporter aggregate it.
Any other reader of TestSessionContext output for build-time data would now see less. A quick grep for TestSessionContext consumers would confirm there are none. The PR states there are none, and that matches my expectation.
Overall, this is a good cleanup that removes a retained-memory cost and a misleading comment. Approve, with CI covering TUnit.Engine.Tests.

Preserve output when the overall build produces no tests.
When an empty class data source has SkipIfEmpty = false and no other source produces a test, tests remains empty. The captured output then reaches no SetBuildTimeOutput call and is discarded when the build context ends. Session hooks receive TestSessionContext and can read its output, so route this unassigned output to that context or another supported diagnostic sink. Keep the current per-test transfer when tests has recipients.
