Description

Adds a hook stage that runs once the final set of tests is known, and lets hooks exclude, skip and order tests.

New [Before/After(TestFiltering)] hooks run after framework filtering (--treenode-filter, [Explicit]) and before the test session. They receive a new TestFilteringContext. [Before(TestFiltering)] can change the set; [After(TestFiltering)] sees the final set and is read-only.

TestDiscoveryContext and TestFilteringContext gain:

  • ExcludeTests(predicate): drop tests from the run (not reported).
  • SkipTests(predicate, reason): report tests as skipped with a reason.
  • OrderTestsBy(key, comparer?): rank tests by key. Tests with equal keys keep the default order (class, then [NotInParallel(Order)]), so a coarse key such as a category doesn't break existing sequences. [ExecutionPriority] still wins for tests that can run in parallel.
[After(TestDiscovery)]
public static void OnDiscovery(TestDiscoveryContext context)
    => context.ExcludeTests(t => t.Metadata.TestDetails.Categories.Contains("Nightly") && !IsNightlyRun);

[Before(TestFiltering)]
public static void BeforeFiltering(TestFilteringContext context)
{
    context.SkipTests(t => RequiresDocker(t) && !DockerAvailable, "Docker is not available");
    context.OrderTestsBy(t => t.Metadata.TestName, StringComparer.Ordinal);
}

Behaviour

  • Exclusions in [After(TestDiscovery)] also hide tests from --list-tests and the IDE. TestFiltering hooks run for execution requests only.
  • An excluded [DependsOn] target is re-included, as with --treenode-filter, and logged at --log-level Debug. A skipped one skips its dependents.
  • Hook-excluded tests are hidden from TestContext.Current.Dependencies.GetTests(...), so lookups no longer throw "Cannot get unfinished tests".
  • Changing a context after its stage, or from [After(TestFiltering)], throws InvalidOperationException.
  • Runs with no TestFiltering hooks skip the stage entirely, so there are no extra allocations.

Design notes (differences from the issue)

  • The hook type is named TestFiltering instead of Filtering. It matches TestDiscovery, and HookType members land in every user's scope through the global using static TUnit.Core.HookType, so a bare Filtering could clash with user types.
  • SkipTests was added alongside ExcludeTests, so policy-based exclusions can stay visible in reports.
  • A stable, key-based OrderTestsBy replaces the proposed ReorderTests(Func<IEnumerable, IEnumerable>). It can't add or drop tests, and equal keys don't override [NotInParallel(Order)].
  • The test list stays AllTests, consistent with the existing contexts, instead of the proposed Tests.

Dependency fixes included

  • Pin patched MessagePack 2.5.303 (GHSA-qhrr-8q5h-9q3h) in TUnit.Aspire.Core and the Aspire test AppHost. Aspire.Hosting 13.6.1 and StreamJsonRpc pull 2.5.302, which failed restore with NU1902. The central 3.x version is not API-compatible with them.
  • Microsoft.Extensions.Http now uses per-TFM versions (8.0.1 / 9.0.20 / 10.0.12). The previous 10.0.12-for-all-TFMs pin pulled Microsoft.Extensions.Logging* 10.x into net8.0/net9.0 consumers of TUnit.Mocks.Http.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update
  • Performance improvement
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)

Breaking: IHookExecutor has two new members, ExecuteBeforeTestFilteringHook and ExecuteAfterTestFilteringHook. Direct implementers must add them; GenericAbstractExecutor already does. TestDiscoveryContext.AddTests now throws once the [After(TestDiscovery)] hooks have finished.

Checklist

Required

  • I have read the Contributing Guidelines
  • If this is a new feature, I started a discussion first and received agreement
  • My code follows the project's code style (modern C# syntax, proper naming conventions)
  • I have written tests that prove my fix is effective or my feature works

TUnit-Specific Requirements

  • Dual-Mode Implementation: If this change affects test discovery/execution, I have implemented it in BOTH:
    • Source Generator path (TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator)
    • Reflection path (TUnit.Engine)
  • Snapshot Tests: If I changed source generator output or public APIs:
    • I ran TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests and/or TUnit.PublicAPI tests
    • I reviewed the .received.txt files and accepted them as .verified.txt
    • I committed the updated .verified.txt files
  • Performance: If this change affects hot paths (test discovery, execution, assertions):
    • I minimized allocations and avoided LINQ in hot paths
    • I cached reflection results where appropriate
  • AOT Compatibility: If this change uses reflection:
    • I added appropriate [DynamicallyAccessedMembers] annotations
    • I verified the change works with dotnet publish -p:PublishAot=true

Testing

  • All existing tests pass (dotnet test)
  • I have added tests that cover my changes
  • I have tested both source-generated and reflection modes (if applicable)

Additional Notes

Tests added: MutableTestSetTests (unit), TestProject fixtures with matching engine tests for exclude/skip, dependencies, total and ranked ordering (checked via TRX start times) and dependency lookups, a --list-tests case, a hook-generator snapshot, and analyzer cases.

Verified locally (.NET 10 SDK):

  • The full [EngineTest=Pass] set passes in source-gen mode (5,964 tests, 0 failed) and via ExpectedStateTests in reflection mode.
  • Unit (542), analyzer (856), source-generator (186) and net10 public API suites pass.
  • TUnit.Mocks.Http.Tests passes on net8/net9/net10.
  • The new tests pass on a Native AOT publish of TUnit.TestProject, with no trim/AOT warnings from TUnit code.

Not verified locally:

  • The net8, net9 and net4.7 Core_Library_Has_No_API_Changes snapshots were updated by applying the same API lines as net10, because only the .NET 10 runtime was available.
  • The engine tests' AOT mode only runs in GitHub Actions.
  • The doc-snippet pipeline needs pwsh; the new hooks.md example was compiled separately instead.
  • I didn't run the full dotnet test or the benchmarks.

Not changed: references between TUnit packages remain minimum-version (>= X) rather than exact. Pinning tightly coupled pairs such as Core↔Engine is a packaging-policy decision, so it's left for a separate discussion.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds before- and after-test-filtering hooks and APIs to exclude, skip, or order tests. It integrates these operations with discovery, framework filtering, dependency handling, cached test contexts, and execution scheduling. It also updates analyzers, source generation, tests, public API baselines, and documentation.

Explanation

Issue #4788 requires test-selection APIs and a hook stage after framework filtering and before the test session. The PR adds ExcludeTests, SkipTests, and stable OrderTestsBy to TestDiscoveryContext and TestFilteringContext. It adds [Before/After(TestFiltering)] support in the source-generator and reflection paths. The implementation applies discovery hooks, framework filtering, filtering hooks, dependency handling, and final registration in the required lifecycle. [After(TestFiltering)] is read-only, discovery exclusions affect listing, and no-hook runs skip the stage. Tests cover filtering, skipping, dependencies, ordering, listing, overloads, analyzers, snapshots, and both execution modes. The alternate names and SkipTests API are documented design choices that preserve the issue intent.

Review: TestFiltering hooks + Exclude/Skip/Order

I reviewed the diff and read MutableTestSet in full and the TestDiscoveryService changes. I did not build the PR or run its tests, and I skimmed the remaining files. The code-review skill failed to start, so this was a manual read.

Overall: The design is clean. One MutableTestSet backs both contexts. It seals after its stage, and the IsModified/WasReordered flags mean runs with no hooks allocate nothing extra. OrderBy is a stable sort that gives equal keys the same rank, so coarse keys such as a category don't break [NotInParallel(Order)]. Public API snapshots, the generator snapshot and analyzer tests are all included.

Concerns

  1. Unrelated change in this PR. Directory.Packages.props, TUnit.Aspire.Core.csproj and TUnit.Aspire.Tests.AppHost.csproj change per-TFM HttpVersion dependencies. That has nothing to do with the hooks feature. Please split it into its own PR so it can be reviewed and reverted separately, and so a package regression doesn't block this feature.

  2. Skip mutates shared state non-reversibly. MutableTestSet.Skip sets test.SkipReason and replaces ClassInstance with SkippedTestInstance.Instance while the hook is running. [After(TestFiltering)] is meant to be read-only and sees the final set, but nothing stops a [Before(TestFiltering)] hook from skipping a test that a later ExcludeTests then drops. That test has already been mutated, which is harmless for the test itself but unexpected. I would apply skips as a deferred list of (test, reason) pairs when the stage is sealed. That also makes the 'first reason wins' rule explicit and testable, and the mutation then happens in the engine at one known point instead of inside a user predicate loop.

  3. Predicates run during the mutation. Exclude and Skip call user predicates inline. If a predicate throws partway through Skip, some tests are already marked skipped and the set is half-applied. Evaluate all predicates first, then apply the results. This is the same fix as point 2.

  4. HookRank of 0 means 'not ordered'. A magic sentinel on TestContext is easy to misuse. Consider int?, or document it on the property. Also confirm that multiple OrderTestsBy calls compose as intended. Each call overwrites HookRank and re-sorts from the previous order, so the last call wins. The docs should say so, because users may expect it to work like ThenBy.

  5. Public method on the dependency path. _hookExcludedTests is a mutable field on a service, reset only when isForExecution. A --list-tests request after an execution request on the same instance would keep stale state. The risk is probably nil because the platform creates one request per process, but a comment or a reset at the top of DiscoverTests would remove the doubt.

Good

  • The excluded-[DependsOn]-target behaviour matches --treenode-filter, and it is logged at Debug level.
  • Throwing InvalidOperationException when a sealed context is changed gives a clear failure.
  • Test coverage is broad: unit tests for MutableTestSet, engine tests and generator snapshot tests.

Overall this is a good feature. I'd ask for point 1 to be split out, and I'd consider points 2 and 3 before merge.

Review: [Before/After(TestFiltering)] hooks, ExcludeTests / SkipTests / OrderTestsBy

The design is coherent and well contained. I read MutableTestSet, the TestDiscoveryService stage wiring and the TestGroupingService changes, but I did not build or run the tests.

What looks good

  • MutableTestSet is a single shared implementation behind both contexts. Its seal/flag model (IsModified, WasReordered, IsSealed) is simple, and Initialize resets all state for reuse.
  • The stage costs nothing when no hooks are registered: HasTestFilteringHooksAsync returns early, so there are no extra allocations.
  • Re-including [DependsOn] targets, with a debug log, matches the existing --treenode-filter behaviour. Hiding excluded tests from TestFinder also fixes the "Cannot get unfinished tests" throw.
  • Hook discovery is symmetric between the source-generated and reflection paths, with snapshot, analyzer, PublicAPI and engine tests included.
  • Tests with equal OrderTestsBy keys share a rank, so a coarse key doesn't break [NotInParallel(Order)] sequences.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. Skip isn't atomic. MutableTestSet.Skip mutates SkipReason and ClassInstance while it evaluates the predicate. If the predicate throws on test N, tests 0..N-1 stay skipped even though the hook failed. Evaluating the predicate for all tests first and applying the skips afterwards would give all-or-nothing behaviour. Exclude and OrderBy already behave that way.
  2. HookRank lives on TestContext. It is mutable global state, but conceptually it belongs to one scheduling run. It stays correct as long as OrderBy always reassigns ranks. It would be more robust to document that the last OrderBy wins. Alternatively, reset ranks in Initialize/Replace (for example on the Before(TestFiltering) stage start) so a second ordering can't leave stale ranks on tests it didn't re-rank.
  3. The sort comparers are duplicated. The same rank → class → priority → order comparer now appears three times in TestGroupingService (global, keyed, constrained keyed). A shared static comparison would stop them drifting apart.
  4. GetSchedulerPriority swaps the scheduler priority for a sorted index. When any rank is set it replaces priority.GetHashCode() with the list index, to keep the order through ConstraintKeyScheduler's stable re-sort. That is an implicit contract with the scheduler. A comment or test pinning it would help. For example, a test that mixes [NotInParallel(Order)], keyed constraints and OrderTestsBy. ParallelGroups also ignore ranks, which is worth stating in the docs.
  5. After(TestFiltering) is read-only only through the sealed set. Hooks can still mutate TestContext directly, for example SkipReason. That is probably fine, but the docs could say that "read-only" covers the set, not the individual contexts.

Nothing here blocks the merge. Suggestions 1 and 2 are the ones I'd most want addressed.

Quattordici pushed a commit to Quattordici/TUnit that referenced this pull request Oct 16, 2026
Address review feedback on thomhurst#7071:

- SkipTests no longer mutates TestContext while the hook runs. Matches are
recorded as pending (first reason wins) and applied when the stage is
sealed, only to tests still in the set, so a test that is skipped and
then excluded is never modified. A reason set before the stage (e.g. by
  [Skip]) still wins.
- Every predicate and key selector is evaluated before any state changes,
so a callback that throws leaves the set unchanged. ExcludeTests already
  worked this way.
- HookRank is now int? (null = not ordered) instead of using 0 as a
sentinel, and ranks are applied at seal like skips. The scheduler
compares ranks with Nullable.Compare; unranked runs order exactly as
before. Documented that OrderTestsBy calls don't compose (last call
  wins; use a composite key).
- _hookExcludedTests is reset at the top of every DiscoverTests call, not
  only for execution requests.

Review of #7071: TestFiltering hooks, ExcludeTests, SkipTests and OrderTestsBy

I read the engine flow in TestDiscoveryService and the MutableTestSet design. I did not build the PR or run its tests. Overall the design is solid.

What I liked

  • MutableTestSet evaluates every user callback before changing state, so a throwing predicate leaves the set untouched.
  • Skips and ranks stay pending until Seal() and apply only to tests still in the set, so skipping and then excluding a test has no side effects.
  • Sealing a stage makes late changes throw InvalidOperationException. [After(TestFiltering)] is read-only.
  • Runs without TestFiltering hooks return early from ExecuteTestFilteringHooksAsync, so they pay no extra allocations.
  • [DependsOn] targets are re-included as with --treenode-filter and logged at debug level. Excluded tests are hidden from TestFinder, which fixes the "Cannot get unfinished tests" failure.
  • The source generator, analyzer, public API snapshots and docs are all updated. There are new unit, engine and generator tests.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. Duplicated discovery tail. DiscoverTests and DiscoverTestsFullyStreamingAsync both repeat the same sequence: Initialize, run the hooks, RestoreExecutionContext, Seal, then rebuild the list if modified or reordered. A small helper such as ApplyAfterDiscoveryHooksAsync(allTests) that returns the resulting list would stop the two copies drifting apart. The streaming one currently has no callers, which makes drift more likely.
  2. Repeated HashSet and list rebuilds. AddRemovedByHooks, IncludeDependencies, ToExecutableTestList and ToContextList each allocate O(n) on every modification. That is fine because it only happens when hooks modify the set. If the TestFiltering set ever holds very large test counts, MutableTestSet could track removed tests directly instead of recomputing them by diffing.
  3. Hook-skipped dependencies. Seal sets ClassInstance = SkippedTestInstance.Instance on skipped tests. Please confirm that a test depending on a hook-skipped test is skipped through the existing dependency-failure path and not through a different message. The PR description says dependents are skipped, and a dedicated test for it would pin that down.
  4. Stale exclusion state. _hookExcludedTests is reset at the start of each DiscoverTests call. That is correct, but if a later exception escapes between hook execution and ReportHookExclusionsAsync, the stale state is cleaned up only on the next request. That is harmless.

No blocking issues found. Nice work.

Thanks for the review. All points are addressed:

  1. Dependency changes split out (7b1e3d0): the per-TFM Microsoft.Extensions.Http change and the MessagePack pin moved to a separate PR (branch fix/dependency-version-floors).
  2. Skip no longer mutates during the hook (893ac1d): skips are recorded as pending (first reason wins) and applied when the stage is sealed, only to tests still in the set, so skip-then-exclude leaves the test untouched. A reason set by [Skip] still wins.
  3. Predicates evaluated before applying (893ac1d): SkipTests and OrderTestsBy now evaluate every callback before changing state, so a throwing callback leaves the set unchanged. ExcludeTests already built its result locally and swapped it in at the end. Covered by new unit tests.
  4. HookRank sentinel (893ac1d): now int? (null = not ordered), compared with Nullable.Compare, and applied at seal like skips. Documented that OrderTestsBy calls don't compose (last call wins; use a composite key).
  5. _hookExcludedTests reset (893ac1d): reset at the top of every DiscoverTests call, with a comment.

Review: [Before/After(TestFiltering)] hooks, ExcludeTests/SkipTests/OrderTestsBy

I read MutableTestSet, TestFilteringContext, the TestDiscoveryService flow and the TestGroupingService ordering changes. I did not build the PR or run its tests. The Code Review skill failed to run, so this is a manual read of those files only. I did not read the source-generator, analyzer or reflection-discovery changes.

What looks good

  • All-or-nothing edits: MutableTestSet evaluates every user callback before it changes any state. Skips and ranks are held as pending changes and written to the TestContexts in Seal(), and only for tests still in the set. A throwing predicate therefore can't leave a half-applied set. Excluded tests are never touched.
  • Shared by both stages: TestDiscoveryContext and TestFilteringContext use the same MutableTestSet, so exclude, skip and order behave the same in both.
  • Cost when unused: runs with no TestFiltering hooks skip the stage, and HookRank is null unless OrderTestsBy ran. Default ordering and allocations are unchanged in that case.
  • Dependencies: IncludeDependencies is reused after hooks, so an excluded [DependsOn] target is re-included as it is with --treenode-filter. The Debug log and the TestFinder hiding of hook-excluded tests make this behaviour discoverable.
  • Both metadata modes: the generator and reflection-discovery paths are both touched, as AGENTS.md requires.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. Unstable sort. testsWithKeys.Sort and the bucket sorts use List<T>.Sort, which is unstable. Tests that tie on every key get an arbitrary relative order, which can differ between runs. The PR text promises that equal keys "keep the default order". Adding the original index as a final tiebreaker, as you already do in OrderBy, would make that deterministic.
  2. Unranked tests sort first. After Nullable.Compare, a dependency re-included by IncludeDependencies has no rank and sorts before every ranked test. This is probably what you want, since dependencies must run first anyway. It is only documented in a code comment, though, so a sentence in the OrderTestsBy docs would help.
  3. GetSchedulerPriority contract. When hooks ranked the run it returns the sorted index in place of the priority hash. That is a quiet contract with ConstraintKeyScheduler. A small test pinning "ranked order is preserved by the scheduler for keyed tests" would guard against a future scheduler change breaking it. You may already have this in TestFilteringOrderTests.
  4. Discovery-stage skips. Seal() writes SkipReason and swaps ClassInstance to SkippedTestInstance on tests that a later stage (the framework filter) may still drop. That is harmless, but it is worth a comment so nobody assumes sealed means the test will run.

I found nothing blocking. The design is sound and the API is consistent.

TestFilteringContext. TestDiscoveryContext ([After(TestDiscovery)]) and
TestFilteringContext both gain:

- ExcludeTests(predicate): drop tests from the run (not reported)
- SkipTests(predicate, reason): report tests as skipped with a reason
- OrderTestsBy(key, comparer?): rank tests by key; equal keys keep the
  default order (class, [NotInParallel(Order)]); [ExecutionPriority]
  still wins for parallel tests

Behaviour:
- Discovery-stage exclusions also hide tests from --list-tests/IDE;
TestFiltering hooks run for execution requests only
- An excluded [DependsOn] target is re-included (logged at Debug); a
  skipped one skips its dependents
- Hook-excluded tests are hidden from TestContext dependency lookups
- Contexts are sealed after their stage; [After(TestFiltering)] is
  read-only
- Runs without TestFiltering hooks skip the stage (no extra allocations)

Implemented for source-generated and reflection modes, with analyzer
support, docs, public API snapshots, and unit/engine/snapshot tests.

Also pin patched MessagePack 2.5.303 (GHSA-qhrr-8q5h-9q3h) in
TUnit.Aspire.Core and the Aspire test AppHost. Aspire.Hosting 13.6.1 and
StreamJsonRpc pull 2.5.302, which fails restore with NU1902; the central
3.x version is not API-compatible with them. Remove once Aspire depends
on a patched MessagePack.

BREAKING CHANGE: IHookExecutor has two new members,
ExecuteBeforeTestFilteringHook and ExecuteAfterTestFilteringHook.
Implementers must add them (GenericAbstractExecutor already does).
HookType gains TestFiltering, and TestDiscoveryContext.AddTests throws
once the [After(TestDiscovery)] hooks have finished.
…ocks.Http

Microsoft.Extensions.Http was pinned to 10.0.12 for every target framework,
so TUnit.Mocks.Http pulled Microsoft.Extensions.Logging* 10.x into net8.0
and net9.0 consumers, overriding the 8.x/9.x floors that
TUnit.Logging.Microsoft, TUnit.Mocks.Logging and TUnit.AspNetCore.Core use.

Add an HttpVersion property alongside the existing per-TFM versions:
8.0.1 (net8.0), 9.0.20 (net9.0), 10.0.12 (net10.0).
Revert Directory.Packages.props (per-TFM Microsoft.Extensions.Http) and
the MessagePack pins in TUnit.Aspire.Core and the Aspire test AppHost to
main. They are unrelated to the TestFiltering hooks and now live in their
own PR (branch fix/dependency-version-floors).

…ep overloaded hooks

- Run ITestDiscoveryEventReceiver callbacks before [After(TestDiscovery)] hooks so
categories, properties and other receiver-set metadata are visible to hooks,
including on re-included [DependsOn] targets; shared by normal and streaming discovery.
- Reflection mode: drop the (name, type) guards for After(TestFiltering) and
After(TestDiscovery) hooks that silently skipped overloads; _registeredMethods
already dedups by full signature, matching source-generated mode.
- Track tests removed at discovery (including via AddTests) and report/hide them
  like TestFiltering exclusions.
- Document scheduler sort stability, receiver order, and add XML docs.
- Tests: overload fixtures for both stages, discovery exclusion with re-included
  dependency metadata, MutableTestSet Removed tracking.
- Break full ties in every grouping sort by input position, since
List<T>.Sort is unstable and tied tests could swap between runs.
- Document that unranked tests (re-included [DependsOn] targets) start
before ranked tests in the same phase.
- Note that the framework filter runs after [After(TestDiscovery)], so it
can still drop a test a hook skipped.
- Add a keyed [NotInParallel("key")] ordering fixture and engine test.

Review: TestFiltering hooks (#7071)

I reviewed MutableTestSet in full and skimmed the rest of the diff: hook registration, analyzer, source generator, docs and tests. I didn't build the PR or run its tests.

Strengths

  • MutableTestSet is a good central abstraction. It shares one implementation between TestDiscoveryContext and TestFilteringContext.
  • Each operation evaluates every user callback before it changes state, so a throwing predicate leaves the set untouched.
  • Skips and ranks stay pending until Seal(). Excluded tests are never mutated, and a pre-existing [Skip] reason wins over a hook skip.
  • The stable sort with shared ranks for equal keys keeps [NotInParallel(Order)] sequences intact.
  • Both execution modes are covered: source-generated and reflection hook discovery are both updated, and the generator snapshots are included.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. SetTests doesn't validate that the replacement contains only tests already in the set. A hook could add a foreign TestContext, which then bypasses dependency re-inclusion. Consider rejecting or ignoring tests not in the original set, or documenting that behaviour.
  2. OrderBy calls the comparer twice per element: once in the sort and once again when assigning ranks. It also allocates a closure. For large suites with expensive comparers, assign ranks from the sorted order in a single pass, caching the previous comparison result. This is minor.
  3. SetTests is O(n) per call, and _removed.RemoveAll(kept.Contains) adds more. That's fine for a one-off hook, but repeated ExcludeTests calls each reallocate the kept list. Batching is not needed now, so this is just a note.
  4. Seal() is idempotent, but Initialize resets IsSealed for reused contexts. Please make sure a test covers a second request, such as discovery followed by execution on the same TestDiscoveryContext. I didn't confirm one exists.

Overall this is a well-structured, carefully designed feature, and the docs are thorough. The suggestions above are small and none of them should block the merge.

Thanks. All four are addressed in 9facd22:

  1. Unstable sort: every grouping sort in TestGroupingService now breaks full ties by the test's input position. Tied tests keep a deterministic order across runs, with or without hook ranks.
  2. Unranked tests: the OrderTestsBy docs (XML on both contexts, and the "Ordering" bullet in hooks.md) now say that tests without a rank, such as re-included [DependsOn] targets, start before ranked tests in the same phase.
  3. Keyed order: added TestFilteringKeyedOrderTests, three keyed [NotInParallel("key", Order = n)] tests reversed by a hook. An engine test pins their start order through TRX StartTime, and it passes in both modes. If ranks stop reaching the constraint-key scheduler (GetSchedulerPriority), all three fail.
  4. Skips and the framework filter: added a comment at the discovery seal and a docs note. The framework filter runs after [After(TestDiscovery)], so a test skipped there and then removed by --treenode-filter is not reported. [Before/After(TestFiltering)] runs after the filter.

Review: [Before/After(TestFiltering)] hooks, ExcludeTests/SkipTests/OrderTestsBy

I read the engine flow (TestDiscoveryService) and MutableTestSet in full. I only skimmed the docs, analyzers, source-generator wiring and tests, and I did not build the PR or run its tests. The automated code-review skill failed to start, so this is a manual review.

What looks good

  • MutableTestSet is a solid abstraction. It is shared by both contexts, it evaluates every user callback before changing state, so a throwing predicate leaves the set untouched, and Seal() makes the "read-only after stage" rule explicit. Recording Removed as it goes avoids diffing the sets afterwards.
  • Skips and ranks are applied only to tests still in the set, and only at Seal(). Exclusion then skip, or a re-included dependency, therefore can't leave stray mutations.
  • Runs with no TestFiltering hooks skip the stage entirely, which matches the repo's allocation guidance.
  • SetTests rejects unknown and duplicate tests, so hooks can't smuggle tests into the run.
  • The hook is wired consistently across the analyzer, the generator (HookMetadataGenerator), reflection discovery, IHookExecutor, and the public API snapshots. The TestFiltering name, rather than Filtering, is a sensible call given the global using static HookType.
  • The docs spell out ordering, dependency and sealing semantics in detail.

Points to consider (non-blocking)

  1. Rank overwrite across stages. OrderTestsBy in [After(TestDiscovery)] writes HookRank, and a later call in [Before(TestFiltering)] overwrites it for the tests still in the set. The docs say the last call wins within a stage. It would help to state explicitly that a filtering-stage ordering replaces a discovery-stage one entirely, and to add a test for the case where the second stage orders only a subset.
  2. Skips applied before the framework filter. SkipTests in [After(TestDiscovery)] mutates SkipReason and swaps ClassInstance for SkippedTestInstance before --treenode-filter runs. If the filter then drops the test, the mutation is wasted but harmless. It could instead be deferred until the final set is known, which would make skip semantics uniform: apply once, to what actually runs. The docs already describe this behaviour, so I don't see it as a bug.
  3. Silent dependency re-inclusion. An excluded [DependsOn] target is re-included and logged only at Debug. This matches --treenode-filter, so it's consistent. But ExcludeTests is documented as removing tests, so a warning-level log, or a way to learn about the re-inclusion programmatically, would be less surprising.
  4. (List, HashSet?) tuple state. DiscoverTests threads removedByHooks through two stages and ends up assigning _hookExcludedTests as instance state on the service. This works, and DiscoverTests resets it on each request. A small per-request result object would avoid the mutable field on a service that could in principle be reused concurrently.

No blocking issues found. Nice, well-tested feature.

Review: TestFiltering hooks (#7071)

Thanks. Here's how each point is handled:

  1. SetTests accepted tests from outside the run: fixed in e0ab4e8. AddTests now accepts only tests that this run discovered. Anything else, including null, throws ArgumentException before any state changes, so every test still goes through dependency re-inclusion and registration. A test passed more than once counts once, so it can't run twice. The XML docs describe this. Unit tests cover foreign or null tests (rejected, set unchanged) and duplicates.
  2. OrderBy calls the comparer twice: leaving this as is. The rank pass is n−1 adjacent comparisons on top of the sort's n log n, and it's needed because Array.Sort doesn't tell us which keys were equal. Caching inside the sort comparison wouldn't be reliable, because the sort doesn't compare adjacent pairs. The closure is one allocation per hook call, outside any hot path.
  3. Repeated ExcludeTests reallocates: agreed that no change is needed. Each call is O(n) over a list hooks change a handful of times per run.
  4. Reused context: added DiscoveryContext_SecondRequest_StartsFromAFreshSet in e0ab4e8. It runs a full first request on the same TestDiscoveryContext (exclude, skip, order, seal), then initializes it again. It checks that nothing carries over: the set, Removed, the reorder flag, pending skips and ranks. It also checks that the second request's hooks can change the set again, and that tests from the first request are rejected by AddTests.

Keyed [NotInParallel("key")] tests with different keys can overlap, so
[ExecutionPriority] now sorts before the OrderTestsBy rank in the keyed
and constrained parallel group sorts, matching the parallel sort. Within
a priority the rank still decides.

Document ExecutionPriority in the equal-key tie-break and the keyed-test
precedence in hooks.md and the OrderTestsBy XML docs.

Only apply the ordering fixtures' hooks when the run holds the whole
class, so a single-test filter no longer fails their fixed-prefix
assertions. Add a keyed-priority fixture and engine test.

Review of #7071 (TestFiltering hooks, ExcludeTests/SkipTests/OrderTestsBy)

I read MutableTestSet in full and skimmed the PR's file list and description. I did not trace the engine integration (TestDiscoveryService, TestGroupingService, ConstraintKeyScheduler) line by line, and I did not run the tests. The automated code-review skill failed to run, so this was a manual pass.

What looks good

  • MutableTestSet is well factored. Every operation evaluates user callbacks before changing state, so a throwing predicate leaves the set untouched. Skips and ranks stay pending until Seal(), and only tests still in the set are modified.
  • SetTests accepts only tests the stage started with and de-duplicates them. Without that check, a hook could add a test that skips dependency re-inclusion and registration, or run a test twice.
  • OrderBy is a stable sort with shared ranks for equal keys. A coarse key such as a category therefore doesn't break [NotInParallel(Order)] sequences.
  • The change is covered by new analyzer, source-generator snapshot, engine, unit and public-API tests, and by docs.

Observations (non-blocking)

  1. OrderBy calls comparer.Compare twice per element: once in the sort and once more when assigning ranks. If a user comparer is expensive or inconsistent (non-transitive), the ranks can disagree with the sort order. Consider computing ranks from the sorted result in one pass, or documenting that the comparer must be a consistent total order.
  2. Seal() sets ClassInstance = SkippedTestInstance.Instance for hook-skipped tests. That duplicates what the [Skip] path presumably does. A shared helper on TestContext would keep the two skip paths from drifting.
  3. The TestFilteringContext mutation APIs duplicate those on TestDiscoveryContext. Both are thin and delegate to MutableTestSet, which is fine. A shared internal base or interface would stop the public surfaces diverging later.
  4. The [Before/After(TestFiltering)] hooks are supported in both source-generated and reflection mode (HookMetadataGenerator and ReflectionHookDiscoveryService are both touched). That is consistent with the repo's dual-mode requirement. Please confirm that the engine tests run in both modes.

Overall this is a solid, well-tested design with no blocking issues found.

Lifecycle order change: ApplyAfterDiscoveryHooksAsync now runs the ITestDiscoveryEventReceivers (InvokePostResolutionEventsInParallelAsync) before the [After(TestDiscovery)] hooks and before TestSet.Initialize. Previously it was AddTests → hooks → receivers.

Impact: a receiver no longer sees StateBag/state written by an [After(TestDiscovery)] hook, and a receiver reading TestDiscoveryContext.Current.AllTests/TestClasses gets an empty list on the first request, or the previous request's stale contexts when ContextProvider caches the context.

HookRank isn't reset between stages. Seal writes HookRank onto each TestContext, and the discovery and filtering stages share one comparison space in TestGroupingService.

Example: [After(TestDiscovery)] calls OrderTestsBy(name) (ranks 1..500). [Before(TestFiltering)] excludes X, then calls OrderTestsBy(category) (ranks 1..3). X is re-included as a [DependsOn] target and keeps rank 417, so it sorts after every filtering-ranked test and its dependents wait until the end. The docs say unranked re-included dependency targets start before ranked tests.

// Contract with ConstraintKeyScheduler: it stably re-sorts keyed tests by this value (ascending, ties
// by array position) and orders waiting candidates by it. When hooks ranked the run the list is already
// in its final order, so passing each test's position keeps that order intact.

Priority order isn't preserved without hook ranks. If hooks didn't rank the run, GetSchedulerPriority falls back to TestPriority.GetHashCode(). ConstraintKeyScheduler sorts that value ascending, and a record-struct hash doesn't preserve Priority order, so keyed [NotInParallel("db")] tests with [ExecutionPriority(High)] can start after Low ones.

The keyed list is already sorted priority-first, so always passing the sorted index (dropping the hasHookRanks special case) fixes both paths.

Reflection and source-gen modes differ. Reflection mode dedupes registration by method signature (_registeredMethods) across Before and After attributes. So [Before(TestFiltering)] [After(TestFiltering)] static void Log(TestFilteringContext c) registers twice in source-gen mode, but in reflection mode the After registration is dropped by the TryAdd guard in RegisterAfterHook.

The guard predates this PR, but both filtering hooks take the same TestFilteringContext, which makes this pattern natural here. AGENTS.md requires identical metadata behaviour in both modes. Keying by (hook kind + signature) would fix it.

This guard never fires for [Skip]. "A reason set before the stage (e.g. by [Skip]) wins over hook skips" checks test.SkipReason, but SkipAttribute applies its reason in OnTestRegistered, during RegisterTestsAsync, which runs after both stages are sealed.

So the hook's reason is set first, a Before(TestFiltering) predicate like t => t.SkipReason is null matches [Skip] tests, and a conditional SkipAttribute subclass or receiver that only skips when SkipReason is empty behaves differently. The documented "already-skipped tests keep their original reason" only holds because the attribute overwrites the reason later.

The streaming path doesn't re-include dependencies. DiscoverTestsFullyStreamingAsync drops tests excluded by [After(TestDiscovery)] but, unlike DiscoverTests (IncludeDependencies), never re-includes excluded [DependsOn] targets. If X is excluded and Y depends on X, Y's in-degree never reaches 0, so Y hits the cycle-break fallback and is yielded without its dependency.

The method currently has no callers, so this is latent until it's wired in.

Doc doesn't hold on the filtered path. This says AllTests holds every discovered test "before framework filtering (tree-node filters, [Explicit]) is applied". But on the filter-aware execution path (filter != null && isForExecution), DiscoverAndResolveTestsAsync pre-filters metadata before building tests. With --treenode-filter /A/*/*/*, hooks only see the matching tests and their dependencies. Either reword the doc or call out this exception.

Duplicated API surface. This copies TestDiscoveryContext's whole test-set API (AllTests, Assemblies, TestClasses, ExcludeTests, SkipTests, OrderTestsBy) plus about 30 lines of identical XML docs. A shared base (or interface) over MutableTestSet would declare these members once and stop the exclude/skip/order semantics and docs drifting apart.

Hot path nit. The sequential and keyed sorts call CompareHookRank(a.Test, b.Test), which reads test.Context.HookRank (nullable) on every comparison, adding O(N log N) extra lookups. The parallel path already caches HookRank in TestSortKey. Carrying it into the notInParallel/keyed tuples the same way as ClassName/Index would avoid the repeated reads.

Cleanup. The PR extracts helpers for After(TestDiscovery) and both TestFiltering hooks, but Before(TestDiscovery) is still built inline in two places (RegisterBeforeHook and RegisterBeforeEveryHook). A matching RegisterBeforeTestDiscoveryHook helper would remove the last copy, so future changes to hook construction (FilePath, RegistrationIndex, executor) only touch one place.

Thanks for this, @Quattordici. It's a well-thought-out feature. However, it includes breaking changes, so we can't merge it into the current major version:

  • IHookExecutor gains two new members (ExecuteBeforeTestFilteringHook / ExecuteAfterTestFilteringHook), which breaks anyone implementing the interface directly.
  • TestDiscoveryContext.AddTests now throws once the [After(TestDiscovery)] hooks have finished.

We're deferring this until a V2. We're not ready to start V2 yet, so this will be on hold for a while. The inline review comments above still apply when we pick it up.
