Problem

The system PII and secrets detectors matched on shape alone, with no structural or contextual validation. That made ordinary application content look like PII or credentials, and since the secrets rule blocks by default, the only practical workaround was turning the guardrail off.

Confirmed false positives against the current patterns:

Input Old verdict Cause
{"product_id": 3074185296} Phone → redacted phone regex is 3+3+4 digits with optional separators, i.e. any bare 10-digit run
created_at 1755302400 Phone → redacted same — every unix timestamp in seconds is 10 digits
Item 4123456789012 is out of stock Credit Card → redacted any 13/16-digit run starting with 4, no checksum
git revert a94a8fe5ccb1…fbbd3 Secret → blocked \b[A-Za-z0-9/+=]{40}\b matches every git SHA, digest and 40-char base64 blob
Order PO1234567 for part X12345 Passport + Licence [A-Z]{1,2}[0-9]{5,8} matches any short-prefixed identifier
Bump to version 1.2.3.4 IP → redacted \b does not stop at ., so dotted versions and 5-part numbers match
apiKey: YOUR_API_KEY_HERE_PLACEHOLDER Secret → blocked no placeholder filtering
This retry logic is redundant Jailbreak → blocked /DAN\s*(mode|prompt)?/i matched the substring dan inside words

Two structural bugs on top of that: the PII rule checked seven patterns but redacted only five, so a passport/licence hit produced a violation that redaction could not act on; and violation rows stored the first 100 raw characters of the offending message, persisting exactly the PII the rule had just stripped out of the upstream request.

Approach

Both detectors are now a single ordered list of validated detectors (detector.ts), shared by the check and redact paths so they can never disagree. A regex may stay broad because a validate callback sees the match plus a window of surrounding text:

  • Credit card — must pass the Luhn checksum.
  • Phone — must carry grouping evidence (separators, parens, country code) or have a phone keyword nearby. A bare 10-digit run is no longer a phone number.
  • SSN — rejects structurally impossible area/group/serial blocks (000, 666, 9xx, 00, 0000).
  • IP — rejects version/release context and matches adjacent to another dot or digit.
  • Passport / driver's licence — require a nearby keyword, and are now redactable rather than detect-only.
  • AWS secret (40 chars) — requires either an aws_secret_access_key-style keyword nearby, or mixed case + digits, non-hex, and Shannon entropy ≥ 4.2. Git SHAs and hex digests are excluded.
  • API key / password / connection string — placeholder filtering (YOUR_API_KEY, ${VAR}, process.env.X, ********, SCREAMING_SNAKE stand-ins) plus an entropy floor.
  • JWT / Bearer — segments must be non-empty; eyJ.. no longer matches.
  • Jailbreak DAN — word-anchored and case-sensitive; developer mode needs an activation verb.

Detection also became more informative: violations record which detector fired (Phone, AWS Secret Key) instead of a generic Secret, and the stored 100-character sample is redacted first.

One place detection was deliberately widened: the password detector now also matches the JSON shape "password": "…", which the old pattern missed because of the quote before the colon.

Trade-offs

Precision is favoured over recall where the two conflict — an unformatted 10-digit phone number with no surrounding context is no longer detected, and a passport number mentioned without the word "passport" is not either. For a rule that blocks or rewrites live traffic, a missed detection degrades the guardrail; a false positive breaks the request.

Verification

  • New spec suites (pii.spec.ts, secrets.spec.ts, 52 cases) cover a false-positive corpus of product ids, timestamps, git SHAs, versions, SKUs and placeholder credentials alongside true-positive fixtures for every detector.
  • pnpm build and pnpm format pass; the full ee/guardrails suite (60 tests) passes.
  • Scanning both detectors over a 234 KB message costs ~2.6 ms, so no regression from the context windows.

Follow-ups not in this PR

  • Per-detector toggles in guardrail_config.systemRules (jsonb, no migration needed) plus UI checkboxes, so an org can disable phone without losing ssn.
  • An org-level allowlist (literal values or an ignore regex) for domain identifiers that legitimately look like PII.
  • A shadow mode that records "would have blocked" counts so an org can tune before enforcing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Improved detection of sensitive personal information, including phone numbers, payment cards, passports, licenses, and other identifiers.
    • Expanded secret detection for common credentials, tokens, passwords, and connection strings.
    • Detected violations now store redacted, truncated samples instead of raw message content.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Reduced false positives for ordinary numbers, placeholders, Git SHAs, masked values, and generic “developer mode” text.
    • Improved validation and redaction consistency across detected values.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on identifier validation and secret-detection exclusions.

The PII and secrets detectors matched on shape alone, so ordinary content was
redacted or blocked: any 10-digit run (ids, unix timestamps) became a phone
number, any 40-character token (git SHAs, hashes) became an AWS secret, any
1-2 letter + digits token became a passport/licence number, and the jailbreak
`DAN` pattern matched inside words such as "redundant".

Detectors now validate structure and context: Luhn for card numbers, grouping
separators or a nearby keyword for phone numbers, keyword context for passport
and licence numbers, adjacency checks for IPs, and entropy plus placeholder
filtering for secrets. Detection and redaction share one detector list, so a
`redact` action no longer reports a violation it cannot redact, and violation
samples are stored redacted.

Overlapping detectors can still produce the wrong label or replacement, and project-scoped OpenAI keys may remain undetected. These bounded correctness and secret-detection gaps should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

P1 Badge Preserve JSON while redacting complete passwords

When the secrets action is redact and a JSON password is supplied, this match starts after the opening property quote but consumes the value's closing quote, so replacing the whole match corrupts the content ({"password":"hunter2000!"} becomes {"[SECRET_REDACTED]}). If the password contains a comma or semicolon, the character class also stops early and forwards the remaining password suffix unredacted. Preserve the JSON delimiters and redact the complete quoted value instead.

P2 Badge Inspect trailing context for contextual PII labels

When the identifying label follows the value, such as AB1234567 is my passport number, this validator ignores the supplied after context and therefore neither detects nor redacts the passport. The phone and driver's-license validators have the same directional limitation, so common phrasings are missed despite containing the required nearby keyword; check both context windows.

Truncated matches still expose credential material.

match.substring(0, 10) + "..." + match.slice(-5) keeps the first 10 and the last 5 characters. For a 40-character AWS secret key that is 15 characters of the live credential in the persisted violation record. The detector labels already identify the finding, so the raw fragments add no diagnostic value.

110-121: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Both rules return match-derived values that the engine persists. checkGuardrails in ee/guardrails/src/engine.ts sets matchedPattern to result.matches.join(", ") for the block and warn actions. The redacted matchedContent does not protect that field. The PR objective states that violation samples are redacted before storage, so both producers should return labels instead of match content.

  • ee/guardrails/src/rules/system/pii.ts#L110-L121: return the detector labels from detectPii instead of the raw matched values. Raw SSNs, card numbers and email addresses are currently persisted.
  • ee/guardrails/src/rules/system/secrets.ts#L161-L177: replace the head/tail truncation with the detector labels. The current form keeps 15 characters of a 40-character AWS secret key.

Assemble the API-key fixture at runtime as well.

The connection-string validator inspects the password plus the host.

value.split(":")[2] returns everything between the second colon and the third colon. For postgres://user:pw@db.internal:5432/app that is pw@db.internal, not pw. isPlaceholderSecret is anchored with ^...$, so a placeholder password such as CHANGEME no longer matches once the host is appended, and the detector reports a false positive.

Extract the password segment explicitly.

Detector labels are not de-duplicated in either rule. Both detect and redact functions map every match to m.detector.label, so repeated findings of one type produce repeated labels. checkGuardrails in ee/guardrails/src/engine.ts joins these arrays into matchedPattern and RedactionInfo.pattern.

Detector order does not decide overlaps; span position and length decide.

The comment states that earlier detectors win on overlap. The sort key contains only start and end. A later detector wins when its match starts earlier, or when it starts at the same index and is longer. Array.prototype.sort keeps the declaration order only when start and end are equal.

The current detector sets do not appear to hit this divergence, but PII_DETECTORS in ee/guardrails/src/rules/system/pii.ts documents the same assumption at Lines 14-17. Make the priority explicit so a new detector cannot silently lose.

OpenAI API key format sk-proj prefix characters length

💡 Result:

OpenAI project-scoped API keys begin with the prefix sk-proj- [1]. Unlike legacy user-based keys, these keys are significantly longer, typically around 164 characters in total (including the 8-character prefix), though users have reported values approximately 156-165 characters long [2][1][3][4]. It is recommended that systems integrating with the OpenAI API accommodate key lengths of at least 255 characters to account for current and potential future variations in key structure [3]. OpenAI currently uses several prefixes to denote the scope and type of API key: - sk-proj-: Project-scoped API keys (the standard for most new integrations) [1]. - sk-svcacct-: Service-account keys, which are not tied to an individual user's account [1]. - sk-admin-: Admin keys used for managing organization-level resources like projects, members, and billing [1]. - sk-: Legacy user-scoped API keys (still functional but no longer issued) [1]. The key body is a URL-safe, base64url-encoded string [1]. Because the exact length can vary, developers should avoid hardcoding length checks and ensure that any environment variables, database fields, or configuration buffers used to store these keys are sized appropriately (e.g., 255 characters) [3].

site:platform.openai.com/docs OR site:help.openai.com OpenAI API key prefixes sk-proj sk-svcacct sk-admin character format

💡 Result:

OpenAI API keys follow a specific prefix-based format to distinguish between different types of keys used within the platform. As of August 2026, the primary prefixes and their associated roles are as follows: sk-proj-: These are project-scoped API keys [1][2]. They are intended for use within specific projects, providing isolated access, rate limits, and spend controls, which makes them the recommended choice for team collaboration and environment separation (e.g., development vs. production) [2]. sk-svcacct-: These keys are associated with service accounts [1][3]. Service accounts are used for automated systems or applications that require API access independent of a specific human user's account [1]. sk-admin-: While not always explicitly detailed in standard user-facing documentation, admin-level keys are used for high-privileged operations, such as managing External Key Management (EKM) configurations via the Management API [4]. General Format: All OpenAI secret keys begin with the sk- prefix followed by a string of characters [5][6]. For security, secret keys are displayed only once upon creation [1][7][8]. If a key is lost, you must generate a new one, as it cannot be retrieved later [1][7][8]. It is a critical security practice to store these keys securely using environment variables or secret management tools rather than hardcoding them [2][9]. If a key is suspected to be compromised, it should be revoked immediately via the API keys settings page in the OpenAI dashboard [9][10].

- Report detector labels from both rule checks. matchedPattern is persisted on
the violation record, so returning matched values leaked raw SSNs and emails
for the block and warn actions, and the truncated secret form still kept 15
  characters of a 40-character key.
- Redact only the captured value for password and API key detectors. Replacing
the whole match consumed the JSON closing quote and produced invalid JSON,
and the unquoted character class dropped values containing a comma.
- Validate card numbers against brand prefix, length and Luhn, and accept
  grouped forms such as 4111 1111 1111 1111.
- Accept a keyword on either side of contextual PII, so "AB1234567 is my
  passport number" is detected.
- Treat a value as a placeholder only when every word is a placeholder word.
Prefix matching discarded real values like testingSecret123, and a bare
angle bracket in a password bypassed detection entirely.
- Anchor the "do anything now" jailbreak pattern.

Addressed all six review findings in fefefaf:

Raw values persisted in matchedPattern (CodeRabbit, major) — piiRule.check and secretsRule.check now return detector labels instead of matched values. matchedPattern is persisted by logViolation, so the previous form leaked raw SSNs and email addresses for the block and warn actions, and the head/tail truncation still kept 15 characters of a 40-character key. The engine's PII-specific override is gone now that both producers are safe by construction.

JSON password redaction corrupted content (Codex, P1) — correct, and worse than cosmetic: {"password":"hunter2000!"} became {"[SECRET_REDACTED]}. The password and API-key detectors now capture only the value and a new redactGroup option replaces just that span, so the result is {"password":"[SECRET_REDACTED]"}. The shared value pattern tries quoted forms first, which also fixes the truncation on values containing a comma or semicolon.

Grouped card numbers undetected (CodeRabbit) — added a grouped detector alongside the unbroken one. Rather than the suggested pattern, validation now checks the stripped digits against brand prefix and permitted length before Luhn; the suggested form would have accepted 12-digit runs while still missing Amex's 4-6-5 grouping. 4111 1111 1111 1111, 4111-1111-1111-1111 and 3782 822463 10005 are all covered.

Trailing keyword context (Codex, P2) — the contextual validators for passport, licence and phone now check the window on both sides, so AB1234567 is my passport number is detected. PO1234567 is the part number still is not.

< bypass and placeholder prefix matching (CodeRabbit) — both were detection bypasses. TEMPLATE_MARKER now requires <...> to form a token, and placeholder classification switched from prefix matching to a word-vocabulary check where every separator-delimited word must be a placeholder word. p<ssw0rd! and testingSecret123 are now detected; YOUR_API_KEY_HERE and ${VAR} still are not. Good catch on test[_-]?\w* — that was not intended.

do anything now boundary (CodeRabbit) — applied as suggested.

Specs extended to 73 cases covering each of the above; pnpm build, pnpm lint and the suite pass.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve detector priority during overlap resolution.

The implementation records no detector priority. The later sort selects matches by position and span length, not by detector order. A later detector can therefore replace an earlier detector on an overlap.

Select non-overlapping matches in detector order. Then sort the selected matches by start before redaction. This preserves the documented contract and keeps the intended detector label and replacement.

P1 Badge Honor escaped delimiters in quoted secrets

When a quoted credential contains an escaped quote, such as JSON {"password":"abcdefgh\"secretXYZ"}, the quoted branch treats the escaped delimiter as the end of the value. redactSecrets then replaces only abcdefgh\ and produces {"password":"[SECRET_REDACTED]"secretXYZ"}, corrupting the embedded JSON and forwarding part of the password in redact mode. The new quoted branches are fresh evidence that complete-value redaction remains incomplete; consume escaped characters when locating the actual closing delimiter.

P2 Badge Permit qualifiers between PII labels and values

When a keyword precedes its value through a common qualifier—such as passport number: AB1234567, phone number: 4155550100, or driver's license number D1234567—this expression permits only non-word characters after the base keyword, so all three validators reject the match. These formats were caught by the previous unconditional patterns but now pass through unredacted; allow contextual words such as number, no, and is between the label and value.

P2 Badge Restrict Mastercard 2-series to its assigned range

The 2[2-7] prefix accepts every 16-digit Luhn-valid value from 2200 through 2799, although Mastercard's 2-series range is only 2221–2720. For example, 2721000000000004 is classified and redacted as a credit card despite falling outside that range, recreating the false positives this validation is intended to prevent; validate the full leading range rather than only two digits.
