fix(gateway): surface trailing stream errors - #3616
Conversation
The Gemini API sheds Flex-tier capacity mid-stream by writing a raw JSON error tail (503 UNAVAILABLE "high demand") into an HTTP 200 SSE stream before closing. The gateway reported this as a generic "Upstream stream terminated unexpectedly before completion" with the real cause buried in the buffered response text. Parse a structured error object out of the leftover stream buffer on both truncation paths (clean end without terminal event, and an abrupt socket close) and surface its message, status and code to the client and to log columns instead of the generic truncation error. Also honor Google-style numeric error codes when inferring streaming error status codes, and redact the tail for stealth providers. WalkthroughThe gateway now parses structured errors appended to terminated streams. It propagates valid upstream status, message, and code values, redacts details for stealth providers, and records the full upstream error internally. Tests cover parser, normalization, mock-server, and API behavior. ChangesTrailing streaming error handling
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change improves streamed upstream error reporting, but formatted error bodies containing blank lines may still produce a generic 502 instead of the real retryable cause; the PR is mergeable with explicit owner follow-up to cover this parser case. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Handle blank lines inside the JSON error body.
Line 23 treats the last blank line in the whole buffer as the SSE boundary. A valid formatted JSON error can contain a blank line after that boundary. The parser then discards the JSON prefix and returns null. The gateway falls back to the generic 502 error instead of the upstream message and status.
Try candidate tails from SSE separators in reverse order, and return the first complete valid error object. Add a regression case with a blank line inside the JSON object.

Problem
The Gemini API sheds Flex-tier capacity mid-stream: an HTTP 200 SSE stream stops after a few chunks and the connection closes with a raw (non-SSE) JSON error tail in the body:
Because that tail never forms a complete SSE event, it sat unparsed in the gateway's stream buffer, and every such request surfaced as the generic:
with the real cause buried inside
responseText. Ongemini-3.7-flashthis is currently very visible: launch-week demand means Flex requests (including DevPass orgs with the Flex default tier) are shed a large fraction of the time, and Flex routes exclusively togoogle-ai-studio(Vertex rejects Flex for this model), so there is no fallback mapping to absorb it — the caller just sees the cryptic truncation error on every shed.Fix
parseTrailingUpstreamErrorhelper: strictly parses the leftover stream buffer (everything after the last SSE event separator) as a single complete JSON object with anerror.message; anything else returns null and keeps today's behavior.chat.tsnow surfaces the parsed error's message, status code and code (UNAVAILABLE) instead of the generic truncation text, so clients see the actual retryable 503 cause. Logs get the real status code too.normalizeStreamingErrordoes the same for the abrupt-socket-close variant (terminated: other side closed), where the tail can also be fully buffered.inferStreamingErrorStatusCodenow honors Google-style numericcodefields, but only in the 400–599 HTTP range (other providers use numeric codes for internal catalogues).Client-visible result on a shed Flex stream, before → after:
Verification
gemini-3.7-flashis shed both as upfront HTTP 503s and as mid-stream 200s ending in the JSON tail above; through a local gateway with this change, shed streams now emit the upstream 503 message/code (verified on several live sheds), and successful Flex streams are unaffected.parseTrailingUpstreamError(tail shapes, partial frames, truncated JSON) andnormalizeStreamingError(termination with tail, redacted termination with tail).TRIGGER_STREAM_TRAILING_ERROR) reproducing the exact byte shape: content chunk, raw JSON tail, close without finish reason or[DONE].pnpm test:unit— 287 files, 4773 passed.pnpm buildandpnpm formatclean.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
