Population data is from the 2020 decennial census conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. To determine population breakdowns by race and ethnicity for each council district, we combined the data from the 2020 census tracts with the newly defined boundaries of the City Council. A person can be of Hispanic origin, regardless of their race. The numbers for racial groups exclude people of Hispanic origin.
The detailed demographic data in this tool is from the 2016-2021 5-year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates published by the U.S. Census Bureau. The data is self-reported and sampled.
We based our identification of the largest population groups in each Council district on the ACS datasets related to ancestry, Hispanic origin, and Asian origin. The count of the Chinese population excludes people who identify as Taiwanese, per the standard practice of the U.S. Census Bureau.
We include those who self-identify multiple heritages in each respective group. The ACS data provides population counts for both the overall region (such as Asia) and individual countries within that region. In our analysis, we excluded the population counts at the regional level.
The median household income figures are also from the 5-year ACS estimates. To determine the median household income at the Council district level, we calculated the average of the median incomes across the census tracts within each Council district.
The voter enrollment data reflects status as of February 2023 and is from the New York Board of Elections. To calculate the enrollments for the new council districts, we aggregated the active registered voters for the election districts that fall within or intersect with the new boundaries. The previous election results and turnout are also based on the data from the NYC BOE.
All maps are based on the shapefiles from the NYC Department of City Planning. If a census tract or an election district fell between two Council districts, we included it in the district with the largest overlapping area. In some cases, our numbers might therefore be slightly different than the numbers reported elsewhere.
