Follow-ups: PHP 8.5 tests, dependency updates, e2e test repairs - #1162
Conversation
Add PHP 8.5 to the unit-php matrix, tested against WP 7.1-RC4 like the other stable PHP versions. No composer.json/phpcs/phpstan version caps needed updating: the existing php constraint (^7.4 || ^8.0) and phpcs's testVersion (8.0-) are already open-ended.
Regenerate composer.lock via , picking up compatible
minor/patch releases (no composer.json range changes needed):
- squizlabs/php_codesniffer 3.13.5 -> 3.13.6
- phpstan/phpstan 2.2.3 -> 2.2.8
- wp-coding-standards/wpcs 3.3.0 -> 3.4.1
- php-stubs/wordpress-stubs v6.8.2 -> v6.9.4
- php-stubs/wordpress-tests-stubs v7.0.0 -> v7.0.2
- phpcompatibility/php-compatibility 1.5.0 -> 1.5.1
- phpstan/phpstan-{deprecation-rules,phpunit,strict-rules} patch bumps
- phpunit/phpunit and phpunit/php-code-coverage patch bumps
- swissspidy/phpstan-no-private 1.2.3 -> 1.3.1
- various sebastian/* and nikic/php-parser patch/minor bumps
It has been observed hanging on a slow/unresponsive apt mirror for 15+ minutes before the whole job gets cancelled. Fail fast instead.
Three real, pre-existing breakages found by auditing the re-enabled e2e workflow, none introduced here but all confirmed via static analysis (wp-env can't run in this sandbox: no Docker daemon, and the playground runtime needs wordpress.org, which network egress blocks): - 5 spec files still imported RestAttachment from the now-deleted @mexp/media-utils package. Repointed them at @mexp/upload-media, where that type now lives after the consolidation, merging duplicate import statements from the same module where needed. - @wordpress/e2e-test-utils-playwright, used directly by the shared fixtures, was never a direct devDependency. It only existed nested inside @wordpress/scripts's own node_modules (unreachable by Node module resolution from the test files) because its @types/node peer range (^20.17.10) conflicts with our @types/node (^26.2.0), which also blocked hoisting. Added it explicitly with an override pinning its @types/node peer to ours, matching the existing @playwright/test override pattern. - The convert-unsafe.spec.ts 'JPEG XL' scenario is obsolete: this session already dropped 'image/jxl' from isImageTypeSupported() (the @wordpress/vips migration), so JXL uploads now skip client-side conversion entirely and go straight to the server, meaning the test can no longer see the client-converted JPEG + blurhash it asserts on. Removed the scenario and its now-unused fixture asset. Server-side JXL support is unaffected. Also removed three package.json build:docs:* scripts (heif, media-utils, vips) left over from packages removed in #1158 and the prior @wordpress/vips migration; npm-run-all's build:docs:* glob would otherwise fail on their now-missing source files. Everything else (26 spec files total) still needs a real CI run to verify pass/fail, which this sandbox cannot do.

The composer.lock update (phpstan 2.2.3->2.2.8, wordpress-stubs v6.8.2->v6.9.4) both tightened and fixed stub types, surfacing 6 errors: - register_rest_route()'s $route_namespace param is now typed non-falsy-string; $this->namespace is plain string in the stubs. It's never actually empty, so suppress the 3 call sites. - ob_get_clean() can return false per the stub; coalesce to '' since a buffer was just started immediately before, so it can't happen here in practice. - Two @PHPStan-Ignore comments (method.internal on add_link(), function.internal on get_terms()) no longer match any reported error with the updated stubs and became unmatched-ignore errors themselves. Removed both now that the underlying false positives are fixed upstream.
Universal.Operators.DisallowShortTernary disallows ?: entirely; use an explicit ternary against the false check instead.
- Move the three register_rest_route() @PHPStan-Ignore comments to sit directly above the $this->namespace argument line: PHPStan attributes the argument.type error to the argument's own line, not the call's opening line, so the ignore comments were going unmatched (same lesson as the earlier register_taxonomy() fix). - e2e-tests.yml: `matrix.gb == 'true'` always evaluates to false in GitHub Actions expression syntax (a boolean compared to a string coerces both to numbers, and 'true' isn't numeric), so GUTENBERG was always "false" -- every e2e job, including the '+ GB' ones, tried to deactivate a plugin instead of leaving it active. Use ${{ matrix.gb }} directly instead. - Make the Gutenberg-deactivation command tolerate the plugin not being installed at all, instead of hard-failing every e2e job before any test can run.
Every webkit e2e failure in the last CI run (17 across 8 spec files) was a plain TimeoutError/toBeVisible timeout waiting for content inside the block editor's editor-canvas iframe -- including the default empty-post placeholder block, before any test-specific logic runs. No JS exception, crash, or navigation error accompanies any of them, which is consistent with webkit simply needing more time to get the editor interactive (this plugin's bundle has grown substantially: vips.js alone is ~13MB) rather than a functional break. Bump webkit's actionTimeout (10s -> 20s), navigationTimeout (-> 30s), and expect() timeout (5s -> 20s) to test this hypothesis against real CI, without slowing down chromium/firefox (which are passing). This is the first real e2e run in months (the workflow only just started triggering on PRs), so these are being investigated as likely-pre-existing rather than a regression from this PR's diff.
The webkit timeout hypothesis from the previous commit was disproven: bumping actionTimeout 10s->20s and expect() timeout 5s->20s made zero difference (same 27 failed/23 skipped/8 passed, same locator, now timing out at exactly 20000ms instead of 10000ms/5000ms). The editor-canvas iframe content genuinely never renders in webkit within any of these tests, not just slowly. Playwright doesn't surface browser console or network errors in CI job logs by default, and the trace.zip/screenshot artifacts that would show this aren't reachable from this sandbox (blocked network egress). Add console/pageerror/requestfailed listeners scoped to webkit so the next CI run's job log shows what's actually failing client-side, instead of guessing further.

The previous "|| echo ..." fallback around 'wp plugin deactivate gutenberg' swallowed any non-zero exit from that command, not just the "not installed" case. A genuine wp-env/WP-CLI failure for an unrelated reason would have been silently ignored, letting tests run against a potentially broken environment. Check 'wp plugin is-installed gutenberg' first and only skip deactivation in that specific case; propagate any other failure.

CodeRabbit correctly pointed out that the previous fix still funneled every non-zero exit from `wp plugin is-installed gutenberg` into the "nothing to deactivate" branch, which could mask a genuine wp-env/ WP-CLI/container failure the same way the original blanket `|| echo` did. WP-CLI documents `wp plugin is-installed` as a boolean-check command that exits 1 specifically when the plugin isn't installed. Check that exact exit code and propagate anything else as a real failure.
The CI-only `github` reporter (from @wordpress/scripts' base config)
declares `printsToStdio() { return false; }`, so per-test console.log
output -- including the webkit console/pageerror/requestfailed
diagnostics added in fixtures/index.ts -- is captured for the HTML
report only and never reaches the CI job log we can actually read.
Add the `list` reporter alongside `github` in CI; its onStdOut writes
worker output straight to stdout regardless of TTY, so this output
becomes visible without needing to download report/trace artifacts.
The webkit e2e job logs (now visible thanks to the previous list-reporter fix) showed a consistent uncaught page error blocking the editor-canvas from ever rendering: TypeError: undefined is not an object (evaluating 'siteData.image_output_formats['image/jpeg']') packages/editor/src/init/index.ts's guard against the known WP 6.8+ issue (`__unstableBase` fields resolving with undefined values) only bailed out when *every* requested field was still undefined. If only `image_output_formats` was undefined while sibling fields had already resolved, the guard didn't fire and the subsequent property access threw synchronously, aborting the whole init script. packages/view-upload-request/src/index.tsx has the identical read pattern but never had this guard at all. Fix both: wait until every requested field has resolved (checked directly by value, not gated on Object.hasOwn, since a field missing outright fails the same way as one present-but-undefined).
CI logs showed WebKit e2e tests exercising the vips.js image-conversion path (optimizing.spec.ts, bulk-optimization.spec.ts, HEIC/TIFF conversion) crashing partway through with "Target page, context or browser has been closed" -- the browser process itself dying, not a script error. `@wordpress/vips`'s worker is created lazily on first use and, per its own `terminateVipsWorker()` API, is meant to be torn down explicitly when no longer needed -- but nothing in this codebase ever called it. WebAssembly linear memory can only grow, never shrink, for the lifetime of a WASM instance, so a page that runs many sequential vips conversions (exactly what these tests do) keeps accumulating memory in that one persistent worker for as long as the page lives. WebKit's JavaScriptCore WASM engine has a tighter memory ceiling than Chromium's V8, making it the one to hit resource limits first under CI's constrained runners. Call `vipsTerminateWorker()` once the upload queue -- including children/sub-sizes -- is fully empty; a later upload spins the worker back up lazily on demand, same as today. `removeItem()` is the sole place items leave the queue, making it a clean, single hook point.

CodeRabbit correctly flagged a race: vipsTerminateWorker() is async and removeItem() fired it without tracking the in-flight promise. Since terminating rejects any RPC still in flight on that worker, a new upload starting in the window between the queue emptying and termination actually completing could grab a reference to the about-to-be-killed worker and have its operation rejected out from under it. Track the in-flight termination in a module-level promise and have every other vips call (via loadVips()) wait for it to finish first, guaranteeing a newly started operation always gets a freshly (re)created worker rather than racing terminate() on the old one. removeItem() itself still fires vipsTerminateWorker() without awaiting it -- that's fine now that the serialization lives inside the module, so nothing outside it needs to coordinate. Also add regression coverage: termination fires once the queue is fully empty, and does not fire while other items remain queued.
Rewrite vipsTerminateWorker()'s pending-termination promise as an async IIFE instead of a bare .then() callback, which oxlint's promise/prefer-await-to-then-adjacent rule flagged since the callback's implicit undefined return wasn't explicit.
