Closes #

What I did

Web components docgen needs a Custom Elements Manifest today.
Now, tags taht no manifest declares are generated from the project's sources.

Users provided manifests still win, whether from customElementsManifest or customElements in package.json.
Sources are the fallback.

docgen worker createManager
  CemManager (if manifests are configured)
SourceManager (always; skipped with a warning if TypeScript or the generator fail to load)
GeneratorManager extends core ComponentMetaManager (tsconfig per file, references, watcher)
GeneratorProject import closure of the story → @wc-toolkit/cem-generator
firstMatch(...) first hit wins, last error is reported

A lookup tries, cheapest first:

find(tag, story)
cached miss for this story, no file changed since → same error
file that defined this tag last time
  the story's import closure
  the preview file's import closure
tsconfig files containing the tag as a string literal
→ tag-not-found naming the story, preview and tsconfigs searched

How it works

  • ComponentMetaManager picks the tsconfig for each file, like React, Vue and Angular.
It handles references and monorepos, and its watcher keeps the caches current.
  • GeneratorProject computes the story's import closure with TypeScript.
The generator only gets paths: a tsconfig path and the closure as include.
  • Our TypeScript and the generator's are independent.
Ours finds tsconfigs and imports; the generator builds its own program.

Step by step, for one request:

  1. The worker starts lazily, on the first docgen request.
It loads TypeScript and the generator.
If they fail to load, it warns and keeps manifest docgen working.
  2. build-docgen reads the tag from the story's component and asks the resolvers.
  3. If a manifest declares the tag, it's returned and sources are skipped.
  4. Otherwise SourceManager tries, cheapest first:
    • a cached miss for this story, valid until a file changes or a new story joins the project
    • the file that defined this tag last time
    • the story's import closure
    • the preview file's import closure
    • tsconfig files containing the tag as a string literal
  5. The generated manifest goes through the same flattenInheritance + buildTagIndex as committed manifests, so payloads have the same shape.
  6. A miss returns tag-not-found, naming what was searched.

Notes:

  • Each lookup builds a TypeScript program (cold start).
cem-generator#35 would let us pass a warm one.
    TS 7.1 may make this a non-issue.

How to review

Read in this order:

  1. tag-resolver.ts + cem-manager.ts + build-docgen.ts
The seam, and the manifest path refactored onto it. Behaviour is unchanged.
  2. docgen-worker.ts + preset.ts + types.ts
Resolver order, lazy loading, the fallback when the source tools fail to load.
  3. source/generator.ts
The only file that touches the generator API.
  4. source/generator-manager.ts + core/.../parse-tsconfig.ts
Reuse of core, and the existingOptions parameter for allowJs.
  5. source/generator-project.ts
Import closure, cache invalidation, the no-tsconfig directory choice.
  6. source/source-manager.ts
Lookup order and the two miss caches.
  7. Tests:
    • source-manager.test.ts: real temp projects, real generator.
    • web-components-generated.test.ts: parity against committed snapshots, with a waiver per argType.

Testing

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • stories
  • unit tests
  • integration tests
  • end-to-end tests

Manual testing

  1. yarn task --task sandbox --start-from auto --template lit-vite/default-ts
  2. In .storybook/main.ts, set framework options: { autoGenerateManifest: true }.
  3. Add src/stories/MyElement.stories.ts:
    import '../my-element';
    export default { title: 'Example/MyElement', component: 'my-element', tags: ['autodocs'] };
    export const Default = { args: { count: 0 } };
  4. Start Storybook and open Example / MyElement / Docs: the args table shows the default slot, the button part and the count attribute.
  5. Edit count's JSDoc in src/my-element.ts and reload the docs page: the description updates.
  6. Remove autoGenerateManifest, restart: the my-element tables are gone and the existing manifest-backed stories are unchanged.

Walkthrough

Web Components docgen now resolves component tags through configured manifests or source projects. The provider passes asynchronous resolver results to payload generation and supplies the preview or configuration file path to source lookup.

Changes

Web Components docgen

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure source generation
code/renderers/web-components/src/docgen/component-docgen/source/*, code/renderers/web-components/package.json
GeneratorManager and GeneratorProject create manifests from configured or inferred TypeScript projects. Projects track roots and imports, and the generator adapter loads the CEM generator and Lit plugin.
Resolve tags from source projects
code/renderers/web-components/src/docgen/component-docgen/source/source-manager*
SourceManager searches story and preview projects and scans project files for tag literals. It caches lookup results by project revision and returns tag-not-found or source-analysis-failed errors when applicable.
Resolve tags for docgen payloads
code/renderers/web-components/src/docgen/component-docgen/tag-resolver*, code/renderers/web-components/src/docgen/component-docgen/manifest/cem-manager.ts, code/renderers/web-components/src/docgen/component-docgen/build-docgen*, code/lib/docgen-harness/src/web-components/story-docs/docgen-fixture.ts
TagResolver provides asynchronous tag lookup. CemManager implements manifest-backed lookup, and buildDocgenPayload uses the resolver and story path. Tests cover resolver calls and payload results.
Wire provider and validate source generation
code/renderers/web-components/src/docgen/docgen-worker*, code/renderers/web-components/src/docgen/preset*, code/renderers/web-components/src/types.ts, code/lib/docgen-harness/src/web-components/web-components-generated.test.ts
The provider combines manifest and source lookup, with manifest lookup first when configured. The preset passes the preview path. Tests cover fallback behavior and generated fixture payloads; the type documentation describes source-based generation.

Sandbox package age exceptions

Update Lit sandbox templates

The Lit Vite JavaScript, Lit Vite TypeScript, and Lit Rsbuild TypeScript templates exempt @wc-toolkit/* packages from the minimum-age gate.

Use spy: true module mocks, as the coding guidelines require.

The mocks for ./component-docgen/source/generator.ts and ./component-docgen/source/source-manager.ts use factory functions with inline implementations. The guideline says to use vi.mock() with spy: true and to set mock behavior in beforeEach through vi.mocked(). The beforeEach block already sets loadGenerator. Move the SourceManager implementation there too.

As per coding guidelines: "Use vi.mock() with the spy: true option for all package and file mocks" and "Mock implementations should be placed in beforeEach blocks".
