Walkthrough

The pull request adds development-server host, origin, iframe, and channel validation. It changes the Highlight menu event contract. It also adds validation for MCP requests, Vitest browser APIs, save-story inputs, and development ref redirect handling.

Changes

Development-server security and communication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Security configuration and iframe enforcement
code/core/src/types/modules/core-common.ts, code/core/src/channels/postmessage/index.ts, code/core/src/core-server/dev-server.ts, code/builders/*, docs/api/main-config/main-config-security.mdx
Security settings control iframe embedding and messaging. Development iframe messages use origin validation unless disabled. The dev server adds CSP framing restrictions.
Host validation and server addressing
code/core/src/core-server/utils/*, code/core/src/core-server/build-dev.ts, docs/api/cli-options.mdx
Host validation compares canonical IPs with configured hosts and machine interfaces. Default binding uses 127.0.0.1. Startup warnings and address output reflect host settings.
WebSocket roles and event routing
code/core/src/channels/index.ts, code/core/src/core-server/utils/get-server-channel.ts, code/core/src/core-server/utils/event-senders.ts
WebSocket clients declare manager or preview roles. The server filters events by sender role and rejects invalid page values.
MCP request validation
code/addons/mcp/src/preset.ts, code/addons/mcp/src/preset.test.ts
MCP requests validate origins. POST requests require an application/json content type.

Highlight menu event migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Highlight event contract and runtime
code/core/src/highlight/*, code/addons/a11y/src/components/A11yContext.tsx, docs/essentials/highlight.mdx
Highlight IDs are required. Menu items use clickable. Clicks emit HIGHLIGHT_MENU_CLICK, and click details omit attributes and outerHTML. The accessibility addon listens for the fixed event and filters by highlight ID.
Examples and migration guidance
docs/_snippets/*highlight*, MIGRATION.md
Examples include highlight IDs and use clickable. Migration notes describe the updated event contract and payload.

Validation and integration updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Vitest browser API permissions
code/addons/vitest/src/vitest-plugin/index.ts, code/addons/vitest/src/vitest-plugin/vitest-root.test.ts
The plugin captures allowWrite and allowExec from test.api or test.browser.api, then applies them to both browser API targets. Unset values default to false.
Save-story input and path validation
code/core/src/core-server/utils/save-story/*
Story names and argument names must be valid identifiers. Source paths must remain within the project root.
Development ref redirect handling
code/core/src/manager-api/modules/refs.ts, code/core/src/manager-api/tests/refs.test.ts
Development refs use a qualifying redirected index origin and path. Production refs keep the configured URL.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 84c21

Browser API permissions can be weaker than configured, and saving a story through an in-project symlink can modify a file outside the project. Resolve these security risks before merging.

Move the new handler mocks into beforeEach.

The new cases use vi.spyOn(...).mockResolvedValue(...) inside each test. Mock the module with vi.mock(..., { spy: true }) at the top of the file. Configure and access the handler through vi.mocked() in beforeEach. Apply the same pattern to the other new Origin and Content-Type cases. As per coding guidelines, “Use vi.mock() with the spy: true option,” “Use vi.mocked(),” and “Implement mock behaviors in beforeEach blocks.”

vi.mocked() in beforeEach instead of creating per-test spies. Apply the same

Move the fetch mock setup into beforeEach.

checkRedirectedRef calls setupResponses during each test, which installs the fetch mock implementation. Configure that implementation in beforeEach, and let each test supply its redirect URL. As per coding guidelines: “Mock implementations should be placed in beforeEach blocks.”

In dev mode, the manager now also requires a message from a registered
preview iframe to come from the origin that iframe was given. A window's
identity survives navigation, so a page a story navigated the preview
frame to could otherwise impersonate the preview.

Also skip the frame-ancestors smoke test against static builds, which
have no dev-server middleware, and fix a docs snippet comment.

Vitest 5 resolves file-write and command-execution permissions from
`test.api` and ignores `test.browser.api`, which its types no longer
declare. Set the defaults on the resolved project config instead, which
covers both options and keeps the explicit permissions a user set on
either of them.

Also look up network interfaces per call again so the address helpers
reflect the current interfaces and can be mocked per test.

Patch v11

(cherry picked from commit d9b09e3)

Conflicts resolved against sb10.patch: kept SB10-only file-search and
create-new-story-file hardening, legacy highlight ids and docs sidebar order;
kept SB11 post-review vitest API permissions and postMessage origin pinning.
