What I did

npx storybook tools stories changed (the stories-changed MCP tool) tells a coding agent which stories its uncommitted changes affect. The agent passes those story IDs to review create to finish its work.

Storybook finds those stories through imports. A changed file that no story imports, directly or indirectly, is a coverage gap: the story list cannot show its effect. The output already reported these files in a "Coverage sanity check" note, but in a way that misled agents. This PR keeps that note and makes it accurate and short:

  1. The story list comes first, right under the summary. The sanity check note follows it, and the Next: step to publish the review comes last.
  2. The sanity check note names only files that could change how a story renders, and says what to do per kind of file.
  3. Changed files in the Storybook config directory, such as preview.tsx, get their own line instead of being called unreachable.

This PR used to also change the test run report and the story selector errors. Those changes now live in #36697 and #36698. Each of the three PRs can merge on its own.

Before

Real output from an eval run (Haiku 5.5, eval 804). The story list is cut to one line here.

⚠ Coverage gap: 10 modified files unreachable from any story (.agent-eval/mcp/claude-browser-mock.mjs, .storybook/main.ts, .storybook/preview.tsx, +7 more) — full sanity-check note at end of this response.

Detected 6 changed stories (6 new, 0 modified, 0 related).

Next: if the change is visually observable, publish the review now — call npx storybook tools review create curating these story IDs. That review link is how you finish; do not substitute individual preview URLs for it.

New stories:
- `feedback-alertbanner--dismissible`: Feedback/AlertBanner / Dismissible (`./stories/AlertBanner.stories.tsx`)
- … 5 more

Coverage sanity check: the working tree also contains modified file(s) that aren't reachable from any story above (no static import path connects them — typically theme tokens, decorators, or other preview-runtime files):
- .agent-eval/mcp/claude-browser-mock.mjs
- .storybook/main.ts
- .storybook/preview.tsx
- eslint.config.js
- postcss.config.js
- public/mockServiceWorker.js
- scripts/start-storybook-mcp.mjs
- src/main.tsx
- vite.config.ts
- vitest.config.ts

The list above is real but may be stale w.r.t. these files — they're often left over from an earlier sub-change in the same diff. Before composing a review, grep the codebase for their exports and call `npx storybook tools stories find-by-component` with the runtime consumers' file paths. Do not assume the list above already covers them, and never invent story IDs to fill the gap.

What is wrong with it:

  • Most files cannot affect a story. Eight of the ten are tooling: build and lint configs, a script, a file in a static directory, Storybook's main.ts, and an eval harness file.
  • .storybook/preview.tsx is called unreachable. It applies to every story.
  • The advice does not work for these files. Grepping a config's exports finds nothing. No eval run found an extra story by following it.
  • The story list is buried between a banner, the Next: step and a long note.

After

The same changed files with this PR, with the story list cut the same way:

Detected 6 changed stories (6 new, 0 modified, 0 related).

New stories:
- `feedback-alertbanner--dismissible`: Feedback/AlertBanner / Dismissible (`./stories/AlertBanner.stories.tsx`)
- … 5 more

Changed files in the Storybook config directory, which can affect every story: `.storybook/preview.tsx`.

Coverage sanity check: the working tree also contains modified file(s) that aren't reachable from any story (no static import path connects them), so this result can miss stories they affect: `src/main.tsx`. A component: write its stories, or tell the user. A file used without an import, such as a CSS-variable token: pass the components that use it to `npx storybook tools stories find-by-component`. Anything else, such as an app entry file: leave it out of the review. Never invent story IDs to fill the gap.

Next: if the change is visually observable, publish the review now — call npx storybook tools review create curating these story IDs and any you found for the sanity check. That review link is how you finish; do not substitute individual preview URLs for it.

  • The sanity check note is one paragraph and covers three cases, so output read through tail still shows the story list. A new component without stories: the agent writes them or tells the user. A file that components use without importing it, such as a token turned into CSS variables: the agent finds those components and passes them to find-by-component. Anything else, such as src/main.tsx here, stays out of the review.
  • The first sentence keeps the original wording, without its examples ("typically theme tokens, decorators, or other preview-runtime files") and the word "above". Decorators and preview files now get the config directory line, and the note also holds components and entry files. It adds "so this result can miss stories they affect".
  • The Next: step includes the sanity check when there is one, so the last instruction does not tell the agent to publish only the listed stories.
  • When no stories changed, the output starts with No new, modified, or related stories detected. and the same notes follow. Without them, an agent that only changed preview.tsx or added a component without stories could conclude that nothing visible changed.

Which changed files are named

Before, every changed .ts, .tsx, .js, .jsx, .mjs or .cjs file that no story imports was listed. Other files were never listed.

Changed file Before After
Source file that no story imports, such as src/theme.ts listed sanity check note
.vue or .svelte file that no story imports not listed sanity check note
.storybook/preview.tsx, a decorator module, other source files in the config directory listed config directory line
.storybook/preview-head.html, preview-body.html, a stylesheet in the config directory not listed config directory line
.storybook/main.*, .storybook/manager.* listed not listed
*.config.* at the repository root or the project root (the folder that holds the config directory), and *.config.* files outside this project listed not listed
Tests and types: *.test.*, *.spec.*, __tests__/, *.d.ts listed not listed
Scripts: scripts/ at the repository root or the project root, and .mjs or .cjs files outside the config directory listed not listed
Dot files and dot directories (.agent-eval/), node_modules, the configured staticDirs listed not listed
  • A deeper *.config.* file in this project, such as src/theme.config.ts, can be runtime code, so it is still listed.
  • The sanity check note lists at most 10 files and says Coverage sanity check (first 10 files) when it cuts the list. .mts and .cts files outside the config directory are not listed, as before. In a monorepo the diff covers every package, so files of this Storybook's project come first.
  • npx storybook tools stories changed --json keeps unreachableFiles, now without config-directory and tooling files, and adds unreachableFilesTruncated and changedConfigFiles. MCP clients only get the text, because stories-changed has no output schema.

Not changed

  • The eval harness. It writes its template files after the initial commit, so in every eval src/main.tsx and .storybook/preview.tsx show up as changed. Both stay in the output, because in a real project a change to them matters. The harness is being fixed separately.
  • A config directory at the repository root (-c .) is not special-cased, because it is rare.
  • CSS files outside the config directory were never listed, and still aren't.
  • The config directory line has no cap, because a config directory rarely holds many changed files.

Checklist for Contributors

Testing

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • stories
  • unit tests
  • integration tests
  • end-to-end tests

Manual testing

  1. Generate a sandbox: yarn task sandbox --template react-vite/default-ts --start-from auto. In the sandbox directory, run git init && git add -A && git commit -qm init (change detection needs git), then start its Storybook.
  2. In the sandbox, edit these files and create one new file:
    • edit .storybook/preview.tsx
    • edit vite.config.ts
    • edit src/stories/Button.tsx
    • create src/orphan.ts
  3. Run npx storybook tools stories changed. Expected:
    • The output starts with the summary and the story list: Button under Modified stories, Header and Page under Related stories.
    • Below the list, one line names .storybook/preview.tsx as a config-directory file that can affect every story.
    • A Coverage sanity check note lists src/orphan.ts.
    • vite.config.ts is not mentioned.
    • The output ends with the Next: step.

Walkthrough

The stories tool now reports changed Storybook configuration files and changed source files that no story reaches through imports. Detection uses Storybook config and static-directory access, prioritizes project files, and caps unreachable-file results. The response text and tests reflect these results.

Changes

Changed files outside stories

Layer / File(s) Summary
Storybook directory access and tool contract
code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/definition.ts, code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/changed.ts, code/core/src/core-server/presets/common-preset.ts, code/core/src/cli/tools/test-support/register-core-toolsets.ts, code/addons/mcp/src/test-support/register-core-toolsets.ts
The stories tool now requires Storybook config and static-directory access. Its output includes changed config files and an unreachable-file truncation flag. The service setup maps configured static directories, and test registrations provide directory access.
Changed-file detection
code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/changed-files-outside-stories.ts, code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/unreachable-files.ts, code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/definition.test.ts
The new detector filters changed files, checks candidates against story references, prioritizes project files, and caps unreachable results at ten. The previous detector is removed. Tests cover filtering, ordering, and truncation.
Changed-file reporting and validation
code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/format.ts, code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/definition.test.ts, test-storybooks/mcp/tests/mcp-endpoint.e2e.test.ts
Changed config and unreachable files appear inline in the changed-stories response. Tests and the MCP tool description reflect the updated output.

Thanks @coderabbitai. On the two nitpicks about moving runStoryTests / getChangedFiles / getRepoRoot mocks into beforeEach blocks: I'm leaving them as they are. Both test files already set scenario-specific mock results inside each it, and the new cases follow that. Splitting one-off scenarios into separate describe/beforeEach scopes would put each setup away from the assertion it explains.

Learning: In Storybook's TypeScript tests at code/addons/vitest/src/node/toolset/definition.test.ts and code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/definition.test.ts, keep scenario-specific results for runStoryTests, getChangedFiles, and getRepoRoot mocks inside each it block, consistent with the existing test style. Do not suggest separate describe/beforeEach scopes for one-off scenarios merely to relocate mock setup; keeping setup near its assertion makes the scenario clearer.

Include the repository root in static-directory exclusion.

When a configured static directory resolves to repoRoot, relative(repoRoot, dir) returns ''. The dir !== '' guard skips that directory, so eligible changed files beneath the repository root can be reported as unreachable.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff note about staticDirs resolving to the repository root (changed-files-outside-stories.ts): the dir !== '' guard is intentional. A static directory equal to the repository root would otherwise exclude every changed file, so the note could never name an unreachable file. Serving the whole repository as static files is not a setup worth giving up the note for.

@kasperpeulen Thanks for the guidance. The implementation confirms that isWithin(file, '') matches every file. The dir !== '' guard intentionally prevents a repository-root static directory from suppressing all unreachable-file candidates. I withdraw the outside-diff note.

Learning: In Storybook's TypeScript file code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/stories/changed-files-outside-stories.ts, detectChangedFilesOutsideStories intentionally ignores staticDirs entries that resolve to the repository root when filtering unreachable-file candidates. Such entries become an empty repository-relative path. Keep the dir !== '' guard: isWithin(file, '') matches every file, so removing the guard would suppress all unreachable-file candidates. Reporting unreachable source files takes precedence over excluding files in this whole-repository static-serving setup.

Replace the coverage-gap banner and trailing grep advice in `stories changed`
with at most two one-line notes between the summary and the story list: changed
Storybook config-directory files that can affect every story, and changed source
files that no story imports. Tooling configs, tests, scripts, static dirs, dot
directories and non-rendering extensions are no longer reported.

Complete the Options fixture with configDir.

services.test.ts casts optionsWithRefs to Options, but the fixture omits the required configDir. Each test calls services(...), which now evaluates pathe.resolve(options.configDir) during setup. With options.configDir undefined, pathe throws before the test assertions run.

Add a valid directory to the fixture instead of adding a runtime fallback for an invalid Options object.

Suggested fix
 function optionsWithRefs(refs: unknown): Options {
   return {
+    configDir: process.cwd(),
     channel: { on: vi.fn(), off: vi.fn(), emit: vi.fn() },

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment on common-preset.ts:409-410 (configDir missing from the services.test.ts fixture): not changing this. pathe.resolve(undefined) does not throw; it returns the current working directory, and storybookDirs.getStaticDirs is only called when stories changed runs, which these tests don't do. yarn test code/core/src/core-server/presets passes on 75d0d53 (4 files, 20 tests, including services.test.ts).

@kasperpeulen Thanks for the clarification. getStaticDirs is deferred, and services.test.ts exercises the docs toolset, not stories changed. My claim that the missing configDir would make this fixture throw was incorrect. I withdraw the outside-diff comment. No fixture change is needed.

Learning: In Storybook's TypeScript code/core/src/core-server/presets/common-preset.ts, pathe.resolve(undefined) falls back to the current working directory rather than throwing. The storybookDirs.getStaticDirs callback is deferred until stories changed runs. The docs-toolset tests in code/core/src/core-server/presets/services.test.ts do not run stories changed, so their options fixture does not need configDir merely because services registers the stories toolset. Do not flag this omission as a registration-time failure.

Move scenario mock behavior into beforeEach.

This case and the other new changed-file cases set getChangedFiles.mockResolvedValue(...) inside it blocks. Put each scenario’s mock behavior in its beforeEach block and leave its assertions in it. As per coding guidelines, “Mock implementations should be placed in beforeEach blocks.”
