Core: Recover from a docgen worker death instead of going dark for the session - #35964
Conversation
…e session A worker that dies is never replaced, so one transient death leaves every later extract answering "docgen worker is no longer running" for as long as the dev server runs. Respawn once the dead worker had served at least one request; a worker that died without ever answering is left dead, since a replacement would rebuild a multi-second TypeScript program only to hit the same failure. The cause was logged at debug and dropped, so the only message anyone saw was the downstream one, which names nothing. Warn with the real error and carry it into every extract that fails because of it.
WalkthroughThe docgen worker client now preserves unexpected worker errors, tracks whether a worker served an extraction, and replaces workers that fail after serving requests. Tests cover failure propagation, non-replacement of unused workers, and replacement of active workers. ChangesDocgen worker recovery

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change is mergeable with owner awareness that the worker-death recovery path should explicitly preserve the original failure cause; otherwise, future regressions could make diagnostics less actionable even if recovery still works. ✨ Finishing Touches📝 Generate docstrings

What I did
When the docgen worker thread dies, it is never replaced. One transient death therefore takes props tables, story snippets and MCP docs down for as long as the dev server runs, and the only thing anyone sees is
docgen worker is no longer running, which names nothing. This PR makes the client respawn after a death it can safely retry, and makes the real cause visible. The
served >= 1condition is the whole design. A worker that died without ever answering died of something a replacement will hit again, and each respawn rebuilds a multi-second TypeScript program only to fail identically, so that case stays dead. A worker that died after doing real work is worth replacing.Real evidence behind the fix
This came out of a CI flake on the
angular-cli-server-docgendev sandbox, where a worker died mid-run and the job then failed with three "retries" that were really one event:deadis latched, so Playwright retrying can only re-observe the same corpse.Reproduced against the
angular-vite/docgen-server-tssandbox by injecting a worker death after its first served extract, then askingdocs-showfor three different components in a row. Same sandbox, same injection, only the client differs. What the dev server printed. The
beforeline is byte-identical to what the failing CI job logged, which is exactly the problem: it never says why.Checklist for Contributors
Testing
The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:
Manual testing
The docgen worker only dies on a fault, so reproducing it needs one injected. From a built checkout:
yarn task sandbox --template angular-vite/docgen-server-ts --start-from auto.code/core/dist/shared/open-service/services/docgen/worker/docgen-worker.js, directly afterport.postMessage({ type: "extract", id, payload });, add:if (!globalThis.__k) { globalThis.__k = true; setTimeout(() => process.exit(7), 100); }docs-showto/mcpfor three different component ids in turn, e.g.curl -s -X POST http://localhost:6006/mcp -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"docs-show","arguments":{"id":"example-button"}}}'docgen worker died, so component docs are unavailable: docgen worker exited unexpectedly with code 7between them. Before this change, only the first call succeeds and the rest returnError: docgen worker is no longer running.yarn nx compile core).Documentation
