MCP: Document the AI surface for every framework, not just React - #35924
Conversation
Every page under docs/ai wrapped its whole body in <If renderer={['react']}>
behind a callout claiming the feature was React-only. That has not been true
for a while: the components manifest is generated by @storybook/angular-vite
and @storybook/vue3-vite too, and the dev and test toolsets were never
renderer-gated at all. An Angular reader following the link the angular-vite
framework page already gives them landed on a page with no body.
The gates are gone. Each page now carries per-framework prerequisites where
they genuinely differ, and React-specific material (reactDocgen, the JSX
examples) sits behind its own conditional with Angular and Vue equivalents
beside it. Vue is documented with its real gap: docs-show returns no props
section until a Vue apiDescription producer exists.
Two supporting fixes:
- The /mcp splash page told Angular and Vue users their framework was
unsupported when they had only missed a feature flag. It now names the
actual prerequisite, and distinguishes "you have not enabled it" from
"your framework does not generate one".
- @storybook/angular-vite was missing from the framework-to-renderer map, so
get-storybook-story-instructions emitted an import migration whose two
sides were identical.
In main-config-features.mdx, the experimentalDocgenServer heading sat inside
<If renderer="react"> with an <If renderer="angular"> block nested inside it.
A renderer cannot be both, so that Angular block rendered for nobody.
Ungating the one heading fixes it; the other experimental options stay
React-gated.

WalkthroughThe pull request extends components-manifest and MCP support guidance to Angular and Vue. It adds framework-specific configuration and story examples, updates AI and API documentation, maps Angular Vite to the Angular renderer, and tests missing-manifest messaging. Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The PR broadens framework documentation and corrects MCP prerequisite messaging, but duplicated Angular guidance could drift and present inconsistent setup instructions; this is a bounded documentation risk that is mergeable with explicit owner follow-up. Comment |

- Angular story snippets import from @storybook/angular-vite, the only Angular framework that generates a components manifest. - Vue is documented as producing a component API in docs-show, per @valentinpalkovic's table correction. The four "no props section yet" caveats are gone so the pages agree with the support table. - Drop the <If> wrappers around <CodeSnippets> that kylegach flagged. - Merge the two adjacent <If renderer="angular"> blocks under experimentalDocgenServer into one. - Reword the Compodoc coupling sentence per suggestion.

This is good to go, @valentinpalkovic. Thanks!

Stacked on #35922 (SB-1766). Base that first, or review this diff against
valentin/sb-1766-angular-docgen-documentation-pass.What I did
Every page under
docs/aiwrapped its entire body in<If renderer={['react']}>behind a callout saying Storybook's AI capabilities are React-only. That has not been true for a while. The components manifest is generated by@storybook/angular-viteand@storybook/vue3-viteas well, and the development and testing toolsets were never renderer-gated at all.So an Angular reader who followed the "components manifest" link that #35922 added to the
angular-viteframework page landed on a page with nothing on it.This PR removes the gates and gives each page per-framework prerequisites instead. Mostly documentation, plus two small code fixes described below.
The reframing this rests on
The MCP server is not a React feature.
ToolAvailabilityhas no renderer field, and every dev/test tool is gated on features and addons only:Only the last row varies. Hence the pages stop being gated and grow one prerequisites section each.
The support matrix, verified against this branch
docs-showreact-vite,react-webpack5,nextjs,nextjs-vite,tanstack-react,react-native-web-vite)componentsManifest@storybook/angular-vitecomponentsManifest@storybook/vue3-vitecomponentsManifestandexperimentalDocgenServer@storybook/angular(Webpack)experimental_manifestsis implemented in exactly three places (renderers/react,frameworks/angular-vite,frameworks/vue3-vite), which is where that table comes from.angular-viteneeds only one feature because it turnsexperimentalDocgenServeron itself; onvue3-viteit is not on per default, so both keys are needed.Vue is documented with its gap, not without it
Vue produces manifest entries, but no framework authors an
apiDescriptionfor Vue and the adapter dropsargTypes, sodocs-showreturns descriptions and story snippets with no props section:That closes when Story 3.6 lands the Vue producer. Until then the docs say so rather than omitting Vue or over-claiming.

Both are real and both bite the two newly documented frameworks by default:
/manifests/*.json404s on the dev server wheneverexperimentalDocgenServeris on, which forangular-viteis always. The manifest is assembled on demand rather than written to disk. The manifest debugger shows no prop types for Angular or Vue, even though
docs-showreturns Angular's.render-components-manifest.tsstill carries its own copy of the React-only prop branching. Epic 9 owns that renderer, so this is documented rather than fixed here.Code changes
@storybook/addon-mcpprinted this on its/mcppage whenever no manifest was found:- This toolset is only supported in React-based setups. That branch is reached by an
angular-viteproject missingcomponentsManifestand avue3-viteproject missingexperimentalDocgenServer. So a user who forgot a flag was told their framework is unsupported, while a React user with the identical omission got the correct "enable the component manifest feature" notice. It now names the real prerequisite, and distinguishes "you have not enabled it" from "your framework does not generate one".@storybook/angular-vitewas also missing fromframeworkToRendererMap, soget-storybook-story-instructionshandedangular-viteusers an import migration whose two sides were identical.A dead conditional from #35922
Worth flagging separately, since it is my own bug from the base PR. In
main-config-features.mdx:The Angular opt-out block added by SB-1766 was nested inside a React gate. Ungating that one heading fixes it;
experimentalCodeExamples,experimentalReviewandexperimentalTestSyntaxstay React-gated as before.Checklist for Contributors
Testing
The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:
code/addons/mcp/src/preset.test.tscovers both branches of the corrected notice. Everything else is documentation, verified byyarn docs:check.Manual testing
The docs claims are the part worth checking, and the interesting ones are the two caveats:
yarn task sandbox --template angular-vite/default-ts --start-from auto.storybook/main.ts, delete thefeatures: { experimentalDocgenServer: false }block this template ships, and addcomponentsManifest: true.yarn storybook, then openhttp://localhost:6006/manifests/components.json. Expect a 404 withManifest "components" is not available in dev when experimentalDocgenServer is enabled. This is caveat 1, now documented.http://localhost:6006/manifests/components.html. The components are listed, without prop types. This is caveat 2.http://localhost:6006/mcpand ask it to show a component.docs-showreturns## Inputs/## Outputssections, which is what the new Angular example on the manifests page reproduces.componentsManifest: trueand reloadhttp://localhost:6006/mcp. The docs toolset notice should namecomponentsManifest, not claim the framework is unsupported. What was actually run here
