I'm afraid we can't change the default here, and I'm not sure we should since it is quite intuitive default behavior (even if not strictly backwards compatible). We should, however, make sure that a setAutoGrowNestedPaths call actually works any time before the bind call...

I've opted for a slightly different solution: setAutoGrowNestedPaths will now throw an IllegalStateException if you're calling it too late. It needs to be called at the very beginning now, just like initBeanPropertyAccess/initDirectFieldAccess.
