Checkstyle itself does not support jdk9+ until version 8.9. The changes in this commit for the checkstyle configuration are related to changes in Checkstyle between 6.13 and 8.9 - FileContentsHolder was removed, and SuppressionCommentFilter has to be used as a child of TreeWalker.
the version of Checkstyle needed for jdk9+ has a class file version too high to use on jdk7.
