Hey guys,

You stole (an old version of) my artwork and made and modifications without notification or attribution.
Yours:
https://github.com/soundbio/ministat-1/wiki
https://github.com/hivebio/ministat-1/raw/master/Docs/Images/MinistatOverview.png

Mine:
http://depts.washington.edu/soslab/turbidostat/pmwiki/pmwiki.php?n=Main.About
http://depts.washington.edu/soslab/turbidostat/pmwiki/pub/uploads/Main/About/overview.png
http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/sb500165g

Had you asked I wouldn't have minded but I now have a few issues

  1. It's based on an older slightly uglier version that was on my wiki vs what was improved for the paper.
  2. You didn't ask and that's not very polite.

Can you please remedy this.

Chris

This as a github.com/soundbio repository. Is this not Soundbio's repo?

Chris,

I was involved with the ministat project when it was at Hivebio. Right now the project is moved to SoundBio, but inactive.

I'm not the culprit who modified the image and put it up on the wiki, but before I chase the culprit down can you provide a URL to the document that contains your artwork we "stole"? In our wiki page we name the open source projects published by the Klavins and Dunham labs as our inspiration. If your image was part of the documentation of either of these projects, I speculate that naming these projects was considered attribution. If the image came from somewhere else, then I don't know about it.

In either case, I'm happy to add whatever attribution you want or even take the image down. If you want attribution added, please provide verbiage so I have to modify this only once.

Thanks,

Paul Schnackenberg

I just found the image. I started navigating from Klavin's lab website documenting the 'stats. I clicked on one of the derivative 'stats and then the about page for that. So, I imagine the open source nature of the project, mention on the wiki of Klavin's lab and the link to Klavin's website was considered attribution. (BTW, the link to the license on Klavin's lab homepage is broken.)

Regardless, please provide the text or remedy you want to see.

The links are in the above issue.

The problem with "inspired by" is that the artwork was derived and not simply an inspired work or "original re-implementation". In general, though I think "inspired by" is the right description for the project and that shouldn't change.

The licence doesn't cover artwork, just designs and code. Also no OS licence I know of allows for copying without reproducing the original licence and appropriate attribution.

But the above are really just technicalities. Personally I consider artwork a separate animal especially when related to academic work. The last thing I want is for some entity to claim I'm not the copyright owner to my own work because of some other image on the internet.

In any case the person who used the image has contacted me and we're working it out. I think the final result should be better for everyone and quick to resolve.

Thank you for giving this your attention though. I really appreciate it.

@turnipsoup
huh. apparently the soundbio github page links to the hivebio image. Probably some residual from the migration as I've seen a mix of hivebio and soundbio text/links.

Glad Chuck (I assume) contacted you. If you have access to Klavin's site, it would be good to fix the link to the license on their homepage since there's no ability to find out exactly what it covers right now. If it doesn't already, it might be worth adding a paragraph about copyright of web properties just to remove any ambiguities.

FWIW, your work on the 'stats and documentation are all top-notch.

The links to images on the hivebio site are residuals left from the migration. Wiki markup was copied over unmodified, so links still point to the hivebio ministat repository which apparently still exists. When I (or somebody) gets to it we'll modify the wiki markup to point to soundbio repository.

In the meantime, just ignore reverences or links to Hivebio. Hivebio is not responsible nor involved in this project.
