socket keep alive

I'd like to know the "correct" method to keep a connection to the server permanently. I seem to have a few random disconnects after a few hours, and then my events don't push back to the client anymore. I haven't been able to narrow down why yet, but is there some preferred way to reinit a connection to the server after it breaks for whatever reason? should this work out the box with socket.io or is it something I have to implement on top?
