Description

Problem

A stateless Responses client can complete its first tool call but fail when replaying the conversation: function_call_output.output accepts only a string, while Codex sends content arrays. Function-call namespaces are also discarded, and a named namespace tool choice is validated only against top-level functions. Codex's web_search.external_web_access field is rejected before forwarding.

Solution

Preserve these Responses wire shapes through the HTTP gateway and retain structured function namespaces across gRPC declarations, generated calls, streaming events, and replay. Keep text-only gRPC adapters explicit: concatenate text parts in order and reject media instead of silently dropping it.

Changes

  • Preserve namespaces in function calls, replay items, and canonical/legacy named choices; validate the selected namespace member.
  • Accept string or content-array function results, including empty results.
  • Preserve web_search.external_web_access, including explicit false.
  • Advertise namespace function members with qualified backend names in Chat and Harmony, including client-tool routing. Recover structured identities from declared tools in responses, streaming events, and both replay loops; preserve literal top-level names containing dots.

Test Plan

  • Protocol tests cover namespace round trips, qualified selections and invalid membership, string/content-array/empty tool results, text projection with media rejection, and web-search access flags: 132 passed.
  • Nine gRPC regression tests cover namespace-only Harmony encoding, shared Chat tool extraction, same-named members across namespaces, literal dotted names, both replay loops, non-streaming outputs, fragmented streaming names, and consistent added/done/completed event identity.
  • cargo +nightly fmt --all -- --check: exit 0.
  • cargo +stable clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: exit 0 (the documented alternative without the OpenCV feature).
  • cargo +stable test: 5,333 passed, 0 failed, 40 ignored across the workspace and doc tests.
  • RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN=stable make python-dev: successfully builds and installs the editable binding; import smg.smg_rs passes.
  • Live GLM-5.3-Flash requests pass forced namespace selection, streamed function argument/item events, and stateless replay with content-array tool output (store=false, no previous_response_id).
  • Codex CLI 0.153.0 completes a namespaced MCP call, consumes the result, edits a Python file through the shell, runs three passing tests, and reports the exact synthetic MCP marker. This exercises the parser on requests that replay tool calls and results.

Related backend implementation: sgl-project/sglang#38359.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for namespaced function tools across Responses API requests, tool selection, execution, replay, and streaming.
    • Namespaced tools are now advertised with qualified names such as weather.lookup.
    • Added optional control over external web access for web search tools.
    • Function-call outputs can now contain structured content parts in addition to plain text.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved preservation of function names and namespaces across Chat and Responses conversions.
    • Ensured streamed and completed responses report consistent function identities.
    • Improved handling of namespaced functions with duplicate names.

Walkthrough

The Responses API adds namespace fields for function tools, supports structured function-call outputs, and validates namespaced choices. Gateway routing, Harmony, regular conversion, replay, and streaming paths now preserve structured function identities.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to af184

Namespace-only function-tool requests may not expose callable tools through Harmony, preventing affected requests from producing tool calls. This behavior should be confirmed resolved before merge.

188-208: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

🔴 Important — Advertise functions inside ResponseTool::Namespace.

ResponseTool::Namespace is neither custom nor convertible to a ToolDescription. A request with only namespace tools emits an empty Harmony tool section. The model cannot call namespace.name.

Flatten namespace function members into qualified ToolDescription entries, such as weather.lookup. Add a Harmony encoding test for a namespace-only request.

Fixed the Harmony namespace-advertisement finding in 940f646. Namespace-only requests now advertise qualified function declarations, and namespace members remain recognized as client tools during routing. The regression test decodes the actual Harmony encoding and checks both qualified names.

Local validation on this revision:

  • cargo +nightly fmt --all -- --check: exit 0, no output.
  • cargo +stable clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: exit 0 (Finished dev profile ... in 34.44s); documented alternative without OpenCV.
  • cargo +stable test: exit 0; aggregate across 114 suites: 5,333 passed, 0 failed, 40 ignored. All nine new namespace regression tests passed.
  • RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN=stable make python-dev: exit 0; editable binding installed and import smg.smg_rs passed.

@slin1237 The conflict is resolved in af1849c (merged main and adapted the external-router test fixture). GitHub now reports the branch as mergeable, both inline review threads are resolved, and the current DCO/CodeRabbit checks pass. Could you take another look and merge when ready? Thanks!
