Description

Problem

With media_refs in place, a vLLM gRPC worker can process media in process, but that puts URL fetching and HF processing on the vLLM API-server process. The intended deployment runs a Redis-backed sidecar next to the worker that does that work and hands back the processor results; the servicer has no backend for it and there is no executable contract for a platform team to implement.

Solution

Part 3 of the media-refs stack (stacked on the proto + servicer PR; independent of the router PR).

  • SMG_VLLM_MM_PROCESSOR=redis selects RedisMediaProcessor: it queues a job with the unexpanded prompt ids and the media URLs, waits for the result with a timeout, and rebuilds the result into the same pre-rendered mm_input(...) the preprocessed path uses. Results always carry full tensors, so vLLM's processor caches are never relied on (no inject_into_mm_cache, never data=None), which is the invariant that keeps this correct under mixed traffic, kv_both and n>1.
  • Protocol (smg_grpc_servicer/mm_sidecar_protocol.py, engine-free): keys under smg:mm:v1:{namespace}, namespace derived from model, vLLM version and dtype (overridable); a hello HASH refreshed every 5 s (TTL 15 s) with the sidecar fingerprint and accepted URL schemes; a jobs LIST with LLEN fast-fail; per-attempt res:{job_id} LISTs with a 120 s TTL. Job ids are minted per attempt, never the request id (shared by both PD legs and reused across retries). Client-caused failure codes map to INVALID_ARGUMENT; expired / processor_error / fingerprint_mismatch and transport failures map to UNAVAILABLE.
  • Advertisement: GetServerInfo reports mm_processor=redis only while probe() finds a live hello whose fingerprint (model, vLLM version, dtype, video backend, media/processor kwargs) matches; the router's auto mode therefore keeps a model on the router path until its sidecars are up.
  • Reference sidecar python -m smg_grpc_servicer.vllm.mm_sidecar: GPU-free, built the way vllm launch render builds its renderer (create_model_config() + cleared quantization + VllmConfig(model_config=...) + renderer_from_config), fetches with vLLM's MediaConnector and runs process_for_engine_async(skip_mm_cache=True); serializes each MultiModalKwargsItem with vLLM's MsgpackEncoder(size_threshold=2**62). Deployable as a container beside the worker, or one per (model, vLLM version, dtype).

Changes

  • grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/mm_sidecar_protocol.py (new): fingerprint, keys, job/result structs (msgspec), error-code classes.
  • grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/mm_processor.py: RedisMediaProcessor, engine_fingerprint, dtype re-cast on rebuild, build_mm_processor redis branch; request_id threaded into process().
  • grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/mm_sidecar.py (new): reference sidecar CLI.
  • grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/servicer.py: pass request_id to the backend.
  • grpc_servicer/pyproject.toml: 0.11.0; new extra vllm-redis = ["redis>=5.0", "msgspec>=0.18.0"].
  • README: sidecar deployment section and knobs.
  • Tests (engine-free): protocol round-trips and namespace derivation; fake-Redis coverage of probe (no hello, redis down, fingerprint mismatch, schemes adoption), LLEN fast-fail, timeout, transport error, client vs retryable code mapping, result fingerprint mismatch, per-attempt job ids, inline-payload cap, env-driven construction.

Test Plan

pip install -e crates/grpc_client/python/ msgspec redis
pytest -q grpc_servicer/tests           # 151 passed, 6 skipped (Python 3.14, no vLLM)
ruff check grpc_servicer/ && ruff format --check grpc_servicer/
python -m py_compile grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/mm_sidecar.py

Not run here: a real Redis, and the sidecar against a real vLLM (needs a GPU worker plus a CPU host with the same vLLM build). The _rebuild path (msgpack decode, dtype re-cast, PlaceholderRange masks) is exercised only by the e2e lane in the next PR.

Add coverage for the Sidecar.handle rejection paths.

No test calls the real Sidecar.handle for an expired deadline, fingerprint mismatch, or rejected URL scheme. The worker tests replace handle, and the processor tests inject protocol results. Add the proposed tests to assert the exact client-visible error codes.

class TestHandleRejections:

        s = sidecar(FakeRedis())
        j = job()
        j.deadline_ms = 0
        result = run(s.handle(j))
        assert not result.ok and result.code == "expired"

    def test_fingerprint_mismatch(self):
        s = sidecar(FakeRedis())
        j = job()
        j.fingerprint = proto.Fingerprint(**{**fingerprint().__dict__, "dtype": "torch.float16"})
        result = run(s.handle(j))
        assert not result.ok and result.code == "fingerprint_mismatch"

    def test_scheme_not_accepted(self):
        s = sidecar(FakeRedis())
        j = job()
        j.items = [proto.JobItem(modality="image", url="file:///etc/passwd")]
        result = run(s.handle(j))
        assert not result.ok and result.code == "scheme_not_accepted"

Adjust field construction if proto.Job and proto.Fingerprint are frozen msgspec structs.

redis-py asyncio socket_timeout interaction with blocking BRPOP timeout

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In redis-py, the interaction between the client&#39;s socket_timeout and blocking commands like BRPOP has historically been a source of premature redis.exceptions.TimeoutError exceptions [1][2]. Historically, when a blocking command (e.g., BRPOP) was issued with a timeout longer than the client&#39;s configured socket_timeout, the underlying socket read operation would time out and raise an exception before the Redis server&#39;s own blocking timeout could elapse [3][1]. This occurred because the socket_timeout was applied to the socket read operation regardless of whether the command was intended to block for a longer duration [3][4]. Recent updates to redis-py have addressed this by introducing a mechanism to handle blocking commands differently [3][4]. Specifically: 1. Mechanism: Blocking commands (such as BLPOP, BRPOP, BLMOVE, BLMPOP, etc.) now pass a special option (often referred to as BLOCKING_READ or _blocking_timeout) to the client&#39;s parse_response method [3][4]. 2. Behavior: When this option is detected, the client bypasses the standard socket_timeout for that specific read operation, typically by setting the read timeout to infinity (math.inf) or the command&#39;s specific blocking timeout [3][4]. This allows the Redis server to control the actual blocking duration without the client prematurely aborting the connection [3]. If you are encountering TimeoutError issues with blocking commands in your environment: - Ensure you are using a recent version of redis-py, as these fixes were implemented to resolve the long-standing issue where socket_timeout incorrectly aborted blocking operations [3][4]. - If you are on an older version or experiencing issues, a common workaround is to explicitly set a higher socket_timeout when instantiating the Redis client, or to use asyncio.wait_for (for async clients) to manage the timeout at the application level rather than relying on the low-level socket timeout [5][6]. - Note that socket_timeout remains a critical setting for non-blocking commands to prevent your application from hanging indefinitely due to network issues [7][8].
</search_synthesis>

Am I incorrect in thinking these timeouts should be more independent?... i.e: The socket timeout is "_low-level_", and the `BRPOP` timeout is "_application-level_"... regardless of what happens at the socket layer, the `BRPOP` timeout requested should be honored. (e.g., `int`, `bool`, `list[str]`) while async clients see `Awaitable[...]` wrappers. This is a **breaking change for type-checking only**—runtime behavior is unchanged, but code relying on the old union return types in type annotations may need updates. Two new protocol types, `SyncClientProtocol` and `AsyncClientProtocol`, are used in overload signatures to ... this distinction. ### RESP3 by default with opt-in unified responses redis-py 8.0.0 now uses RESP3 on the wire by default while preserving legacy RESP2-compatible Python response shapes for existing applications (`#4052`). Protocol-independent unified response shapes are available by setting `legacy_responses=False`, so affected commands return the same Python structure with RESP2 or RESP3. Use `protocol=2` to force RESP2 on the wire, `protocol=3` to opt into native RESP3 response shapes, or `legacy_responses=False` to migrate to unified responses. See `docs/unified_responses.rst` and `specs/unified_responses_migration_guide.md` for the affected commands and migration details. ### Connection and retry defaults Default connection settings were updated: `socket_timeout` and `socket_connect_timeout` now default to 5 seconds, TCP keepalive is enabled by default, socket reads use a 32 KB buffer, connection pools default to `max_connections=100`, and retry defaults now use 10 attempts with exponential jitter backoff. For example, with `socket_timeout=4` and `r.brpop(&`#39`;key&`#39`;, timeout=8)`, the socket would timeout after 4 seconds instead of blocking for up to 8 seconds as requested. Fixes `#2807` ## Solution Introduced a `BLOCKING_READ` option that blocking commands pass to `execute_command`. The `parse_response` method detects this option and calls `read_response(timeout=math.inf)`, bypassing the socket timeout and letting the Redis server control the blocking duration. ## Changes - `redis/client.py`: Added `BLOCKING_READ` constant; modified `parse_response` to handle it by passing `timeout=math.inf` to `read_response` - `redis/asyncio/client.py`: Same change for the async stack - `redis/asyncio/cluster.py`: Same change for the async cluster client - `redis/commands/core.py`: All 8 blocking commands now pass `BLOCKING_READ=True` ## Notes This follows the same pattern used by PubSub blocking reads (which already pass `math.inf` to `read_response`). The sync cluster client inherits the fix from `Redis.parse_response`. --- > [!NOTE] > **Medium Risk** > Changes connection read-timeout behavior for blocking commands across sync/async/cluster paths; scope is narrow but affects long-lived I/O on shared connections. > > **Overview** > Blocking list/sorted-set commands (`BLPOP`, `BRPOP`, `BRPOPLPUSH`, `BLMOVE`, `BLMPOP`, `BZPOPMIN`, `BZPOPMAX`, `BZMPOP`) no longer fail early when the command’s block timeout is longer than the connection **`socket_timeout`**. > > A new **`BLOCKING_READ`** execute option is threaded from those commands into **`parse_response`** on the sync client, async client, and async cluster client. With a `socket_timeout` configured, `BLPOP key 0` (or `BLPOP` with timeout 0) would abort after `socket_timeout` instead of waiting forever - which is the very bug this PR is trying to fix, just for the `timeout=0` case. Per that docstring, the async block-forever value should be `math.inf`, not `None`. ... The sync path happens to be fine, but for a different reason: sync `read_response` defaults to `SENTINEL` (= use configured `socket_timeout`) and `timeout=None` there flows down to `settimeout(None)` = blocking mode, so `0 -> None` does block forever. That asymmetry (async `None` = "use socket_timeout", sync `None` = "block forever") is also why the two `parse_response` bodies use different pop defaults (`None` vs `SENTINEL`), and it&`#39`;s easy to trip over - a short comment on each would help. ... > `@eeshsaxena` Thanks for the ca…[truncated] <title>[BUG] brpop crashes in version 8.0.0 with: redis.exceptions.TimeoutError: Timeout reading from socket exception</title> GitHub issue 4125 in redis/redis-py (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference) # [BUG] brpop crashes in version 8.0.0 with: redis.exceptions.TimeoutError: Timeout reading from socket exception - State: closed - Author: twilispar - Created: 2026-06-17T13:21:51Z - Updated: 2026-06-23T05:05:25Z - Repository: redis/redis-py - Number: `#4125` --- **Describe the bug** The `brpop` crashes In version `8.0.0` on docker. Bound non-blocking Redis reads without shortening BRPOP.

_redis_client configures socket_connect_timeout=1.0 but no read timeout. The non-blocking hgetall, llen, and lpush awaits can remain pending after connection establishment. Generate awaits these operations while holding _mm_inflight, and GetServerInfo awaits probe().

Do not add socket_timeout=5.0 directly to this client. The existing BRPOP timeout can be longer than five seconds, and redis-py versions allowed by redis>=5.0 can apply socket_timeout to that blocking read. Wrap only hgetall, llen, and lpush in a bounded asyncio.wait_for, and keep BRPOP governed by _timeout_ms.

🔴 Important: Do not map every RuntimeError to placeholder_mismatch.

process_for_engine_async sends every RuntimeError to placeholder_mismatch. That code is a client error, so _submit_and_wait raises ValueError instead of MmProcessorUnavailable. The router therefore cannot retry the job elsewhere. Match the placeholder wording before returning this code.

🟡 Nit: Do not expose raw exception text from the catch-all worker path.

Sidecar._worker serializes repr(e) into JobResult.message. RedisMediaProcessor._submit_and_wait includes that message in MmProcessorUnavailable, and Generate sends str(e) in the gRPC UNAVAILABLE details. Use a fixed message for unexpected failures. The preceding logger.exception call retains the full details in server logs.

… sidecar

Add SMG_VLLM_MM_PROCESSOR=redis: the servicer hands each media_refs request
to a sidecar over Redis lists and rebuilds the sidecar's full-tensor result
into the same pre-rendered engine input the preprocessed path uses, so
vLLM's processor caches are never relied on (no inject_into_mm_cache, no
data=None).

Protocol (engine-free, smg_grpc_servicer/mm_sidecar_protocol.py): keys under
smg:mm:v1:{namespace} with namespace derived from (model, vLLM version,
dtype); a hello HASH the sidecar refreshes every 5 s (TTL 15 s) carrying its
fingerprint and accepted URL schemes; a jobs LIST (LLEN fast-fail above
SMG_VLLM_MM_SIDECAR_MAX_QUEUE); per-attempt res:{job_id} LISTs with a
120 s TTL. Jobs carry unexpanded prompt ids, URLs and a deadline; results
carry expanded ids, vLLM's mm_hashes, placeholders with is_embed masks and
MultiModalKwargsItem blobs from vLLM's MsgpackEncoder. Client-caused
failure codes map to INVALID_ARGUMENT, everything else to UNAVAILABLE.

The worker advertises mm_processor=redis only while probe() finds a live
hello whose fingerprint matches, and rejects results whose fingerprint
differs. The reference sidecar (python -m smg_grpc_servicer.vllm.mm_sidecar)
builds a GPU-free renderer the way vllm launch render does, fetches with
vLLM's MediaConnector and runs process_for_engine_async(skip_mm_cache=True).

Review fixes for the Redis media-processing backend:

- The sidecar worker loop guards handle(): a failing job is answered with
  processor_error and the loop keeps serving instead of taking the whole
  sidecar down through the fail-fast gather.
- Hello refresh and result push are single MULTI/EXEC transactions, so a
  crash between the write and its EXPIRE can no longer leave a TTL-less
  hello advertising a dead sidecar, or an unbounded result key.
- The key namespace hashes every fingerprint field, so fleets that differ
  in video backend or media/processor kwargs never share a hello key or a
  jobs list.
- Fetch and processing failures are classified by exception type in two
  pure helpers; the two remaining message substrings are pinned by tests.
- The sidecar reuses media_refs.url_scheme, and the Redis backend reuses
  BASE_SCHEMES/parse_scheme_list, so both ends classify URLs identically.
- A missing redis client fails with the install hint for the vllm-redis
  extra instead of a bare ModuleNotFoundError.
- First unit tests for the sidecar loop (guard, transactions, heartbeat).

…r result decoding

- Fingerprint gains limit_per_prompt: on the redis path the sidecar's limit is
  the only one applied, so a worker/sidecar skew is now a startup-visible
  "not advertised" instead of a runtime 400 storm
- an undecodable or foreign-schema result is retryable (UNAVAILABLE), not an
  INTERNAL abort
- the no-hello probe message carries the worker fingerprint so a namespace
  disagreement is diffable against the sidecar's startup line
- the redis backend enforces SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_ITEMS before queueing

…otocol check in probe

- engine_fingerprint and the sidecar's config_fingerprint share
  fingerprint_from_model_config, pinned by a test feeding one fake config
  through both entry points
- limit_per_prompt is resolved per modality through vLLM's accessor before
  hashing, so equivalent spellings share a namespace
- probe() rejects a hello whose protocol schema is not the worker's, so
  protocol skew is a startup-visible "not advertised" instead of a
  per-request UNAVAILABLE

… options

resolved_mm_limits carries the effective count from get_limit_per_prompt
plus every non-default sibling option, over the standard modalities and
any configured key, so equivalent --limit-mm-per-prompt spellings still
match while a skewed num_frames/width or an extra modality fails closed.
A vllm-gated test pins the derivation against the real MultiModalConfig.

…own option shapes

resolved_mm_limits records the unset default once and only the configured
modalities whose effective count or sibling options differ from it, so an
explicitly spelled default matches an omitted flag for every modality.
Unknown option shapes are hashed by their attributes (or rejected), never
reduced to a count; a pydantic-dataclass test runs the validated-value path
without vLLM.

…lies on

The vLLM-gated test now asserts that every standard modality and an
unknown key resolve to the same unset default, and that spelling that
default out for any modality matches omitting it.

The CPU unit-test job has no vLLM, so every importorskip("vllm") test in
grpc_servicer/tests was a permanent skip; the vLLM e2e job installs vLLM
and the servicer from source, so it runs the suite once before the e2e
cases.

The step is opted into by the vLLM row of e2e-1gpu-chat instead of every
vLLM lane, checks the vllm and msgspec import gates first so the gated
tests cannot silently skip, and prints skip reasons.

The CPU job never had msgspec, so the sidecar protocol and fake-redis
test modules skipped silently; the vLLM lane keeps only the
importorskip("vllm") cases to itself.

…pydantic

pyzmq would un-skip test_tokenspeed_dp_rank_pin.py, which then imports the
TokenSpeed servicer and fails collection without torch, so the zmq-gated
modules stay skipped and the comment says so; pydantic lets this PR's
limit-options test run here.
