Description

Problem

Clients cannot tell which backend worker served a response. That makes it harder to locate the relevant worker logs, diagnose routing behavior, or determine whether a retry landed on a different replica.

Solution

Return the selected worker URL in x-smg-routed-worker-id. The value is the URL as known by the gateway, including the @<rank> suffix for data-parallel workers.

This ports the intent of sgl-project/sglang#34976 to SMG while covering SMG's response paths.

Changes

  • Add x-smg-routed-worker-id to regular HTTP streaming and non-streaming responses.
  • Add it to multipart/audio responses.
  • Attribute PD responses to the decode worker that produced the client-visible response.
  • Add it to simple OpenAI Responses streaming passthrough responses.
  • Add integration coverage for streaming and non-streaming responses.

Test Plan

  • cargo +nightly fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo check -p smg --lib
  • cargo test -p smg --test routing_tests test_routed_worker_id_for_streaming_and_non_streaming_responses

cargo clippy -p smg --lib --test routing_tests -- -D warnings was previously checked and stops on the pre-existing clippy::unneeded_wildcard_pattern warning at model_gateway/src/worker/monitor.rs:825.

Checklist
  • cargo +nightly fmt passes
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings passes (blocked by the pre-existing warning noted above)
  • (Optional) Documentation updated

Review Change Stack

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a response header identifying the worker that handled a request.
    • Routed worker details are now included consistently across streaming and non-streaming responses, including chat completions, transcriptions, and typed requests.
    • The identifier is preserved for passthrough responses and responses processed before delivery.

Walkthrough

The change adds a routed-worker response header helper and applies it to decode, transcription, typed, and OpenAI response paths. Integration tests verify the header for streaming and non-streaming chat completions.

Changes

Routed worker header propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Header contract and insertion helper
model_gateway/src/routers/common/header_utils.rs
Adds HEADER_ROUTED_WORKER_ID and insert_routed_worker_id. Invalid worker URLs are ignored.

model_gateway/src/routers/http/pd_router.rs, model_gateway/src/routers/http/router.rs, model_gateway/src/routers/openai/responses/streaming.rs, model_gateway/tests/routing/header_forwarding_test.rs
Adds the routed worker identifier to streaming and non-streaming responses. Tests verify the header value for chat completions.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e331c

The new worker-attribution header is missing from several generated failure responses, so clients can lose worker information precisely when diagnosing failed requests. This is a localized correctness and diagnosability gap that should be fixed before merge; invalid worker URLs also need explicit handling or visibility.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

🟡 Nit: Make invalid worker URLs observable.

HeaderValue::from_str(worker_url) can fail, but the error is discarded. The gateway then returns a normal response without x-smg-routed-worker-id. Return the conversion error or emit an error and metric after validating worker URLs during registration.

As per coding guidelines, “Do not silently fall back to None or a default when configuration validation should fail loudly.”

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

🔴 Important: Apply the routed-worker header to error responses across all propagated paths.

The header is present on successful forwarded responses but is missing when a router constructs an error response. This breaks the response contract for clients that need worker attribution during failures.

  • model_gateway/src/routers/http/pd_router.rs#L762-L764: add the decode worker ID in handle_decode_error_response for streaming and non-streaming errors.
  • model_gateway/src/routers/http/router.rs#L952-L953: retain the worker ID when multipart body buffering fails.
  • model_gateway/src/routers/openai/responses/streaming.rs#L571-L572: add the worker ID to the generated non-success passthrough response.
