  • Strings longer than 80 characters should be written across multiple lines using string concatenation.

  • When programatically building up a string, use Array#join instead of string concatenation. Mostly for IE: jsPerf.

  • Use named functions. They make stack traces a lot easier to read and they avoid problems with hoisting
  • Function expressions:
 // named function expression
 var named = function named() {

 // **avoid** anonymous function expression

  • Never declare a function in a non-function block (if, while, etc). Assign the function to a variable instead. Browsers will allow you to do it, but they all interpret it differently, which is bad news bears.

    // bad
    if (currentUser) {

        console.log('Nope.');

    if (currentUser) {
      var test = function test() {
        console.log('Yup.');
      };
    }
  • Never name a parameter arguments, this will take precendence over the arguments object that is given to every function scope.

  • Use dot notation when accessing properties.

    var luke = {
      jedi: true,
      age: 28

  • Use subscript notation [] when accessing properties with a variable.

      jedi: true,
      age: 28

  • Always use var to declare variables. Not doing so will result in global variables. We want to avoid polluting the global namespace. Captain Planet warned us of that.

  • Use one var declaration for multiple variables and declare each variable on a newline.

    // bad
    var items = getItems();

  • Declare unassigned variables last. This is helpful when later on you might need to assign a variable depending on one of the previous assigned variables.

        goSportsTeam = true,

  • Assign variables at the top of their scope. This helps avoid issues with variable declaration and assignment hoisting related issues.

      return name;

  • Variable declarations get hoisted to the top of their scope, their assignment does not.

    // we know this wouldn't work (assuming there

    // variable hoisting. Note: the assignment

  • Anonymous function expression hoist their variable name, but not the function assignment.

  • Named function expressions hoist the variable name, not the function name or the function body.

  • Function declarations hoist their name and the function body.

  • Use === and !== over == and !=.

  • Conditional expressions are evaluated using coercion with the ToBoolean method and always follow these simple rules:

    • Objects evaluate to true
    • Undefined evaluates to false
    • Null evaluates to false
    • Booleans evaluate to the value of the boolean
    • Numbers evalute to false if +0, -0, or NaN, otherwise true
    • Strings evaluate to false if an empty string '', otherwise true

  • Use indentation when making long method chains.

Yes.

  • If there is a list of things separated by commas, and it wraps across multiple lines, put the comma at the start of the next line, directly below the token that starts the list. Put the final token in the list on a line by itself.

Don't use them except in four situations:

  • for (;;) loops. They're actually required.

  • null loops like: while (something) ; (But you'd better have a good reason for doing that.)

  • case "foo": doSomething(); break

  • In front of a leading ( or [ at the start of the line. This prevents the expression from being interpreted as a function call or property access, respectively.

    // bad
    (function() {
      var name = 'Skywalker';
      return name;
    })();
    
    // good
    ;(x || y).doSomething()
    ;[a, b, c].forEach(doSomething)
    for (var i = 0; i < 10; i ++) {

- The callback should always be the last argument in the list. Its first argument is the Error or null.
- Send the error message back as the first argument to the callback.

  • Perform type coercion at the beginning of the statement.

  • Strings:

    var totalScore = '' + this.reviewScore + ' total score';
    
    // good

  • Use parseInt for Numbers and always with a radix for type casting.

  • If for whatever reason you are doing something wild and parseInt is your bottleneck and need to use Bitshift for performance reasons, leave a comment explaining why and what you're doing.

    var val = new Number(inputValue);
    
    // bad
    var val = +inputValue;
    
    // bad
    var val = inputValue >> 0;

  • In general avoid single letter names. Be descriptive.

- Use camelCase when naming objects, functions, and instances

  ```javascript

  var this_is_my_object = {};

  var thisIsMyObject = {};

- Use PascalCase when naming constructors or classes

  ```javascript

  function user(options) {

    name: 'nope'

    name: 'yup'
  });
  ```

- Use a leading underscore `_` when naming private properties

  ```javascript

  this.__firstName__ = 'Panda';
  this.firstName_ = 'Panda';

  this._firstName = 'Panda';
  ```

- Name your functions. This is helpful for stack traces.

  ```javascript
  // bad
  var log = function(msg) {
    console.log(msg);

  var log = function log(msg) {
    console.log(msg);
  };
  ```

## <a name='accessors'>Accessors</a>

- Accessor functions for properties are not required
- If you do make accessor functions use getVal() and setVal('hello')

  ```javascript
  // bad
  dragon.age();

  // good
  dragon.getAge();

  // bad
  dragon.age(25);

  // good
  dragon.setAge(25);
  ```

- If the property is a boolean, use isVal() or hasVal()

  ```javascript
  // bad
  if (!dragon.age()) {

  if (!dragon.hasAge()) {
    return false;

  ```

- It's okay to create get() and set() functions, but be consistent.

  ```javascript
  function Jedi(options) {
    options || (options = {});
    var lightsaber = options.lightsaber || 'blue';
    this.set('lightsaber', lightsaber);
  }

  Jedi.prototype.set = function(key, val) {
    this[key] = val;
  };

  Jedi.prototype.get = function(key) {

## <a name='constructors'>Constructors</a>

- Assign methods to the prototype object, instead of overwriting the prototype with a new object. Overwriting the prototype makes inheritance impossible: by resetting the prototype you'll overwrite the base!

  ```javascript

  // bad
  Jedi.prototype = {
    fight: function fight() {
      console.log('fighting');

    block: function block() {
      console.log('blocking');

- Methods can return `this` to help with method chaining.

  luke.jump(); // => true

- It's okay to write a custom toString() method, just make sure it works successfully and causes no side effects.

## <a name='errors'>Errors</a>

- Never throw in an asynchronous method.
- always create a new Error object as it provides a call stack for debugging

## <a name='modules'>Modules</a>

- The module should start with a `!`. This ensures that if a malformed module forgets to include a final semicolon there aren't errors in production when the scripts get concatenated.
- The file should be named with camelCase, live in a folder with the same name, and match the name of the single export.
- Add a method called noConflict() that sets the exported module to the previous version.
- Always declare `'use strict';` at the top of the module.

  ```javascript

  !function(global) {
    'use strict';

    var previousFancyInput = global.FancyInput;

    function FancyInput(options) {
      options || (options = {});
    }

    FancyInput.noConflict = function noConflict() {

## <a name='jquery'>jQuery</a>

- Prefix jQuery object variables with a `$`.

- Cache jQuery lookups.

  ```javascript

  function setSidebar() {
    $('.sidebar').hide();

    // ...stuff...

    var $sidebar = $('.sidebar');

- Use `find` with scoped jQuery object queries.

- **comma-first**
  If your team chooses to not use comma-first then use of jslint and jshint is necessary to identify syntax errors as
  well as placing "use strict"; at the top of the functional scope to avoid global variable declarations.

- **semi-colons**
  If your team does not want to rely on automatic semi-colon insertion (ASI) then it is necessary to use jslint and
  jshint to identify syntax errors and terminate function declarations with semi-colons
