Yeah, I don't really know what was being cooked here but this was wrong. Fixes #3337.
I don't really know what to do with docs or if you want to do anything different, i just made them implementation that skips validation and such if its a bearer token, feel free to provide a different implementation if you want, i just needed something that worked.
