With this (plus #38081), make ptestlong-nodoc still produces errors:

sage -t --long --warn-long 23.9 --random-seed=107822812964695469795409383677904579428 src/sage/doctest/forker.py  # 5 doctests failed
sage -t --long --warn-long 23.9 --random-seed=107822812964695469795409383677904579428 src/sage/doctest/control.py  # 7 doctests failed

make ptestlong-nodoc TEST_FILES=src/sage/doctest/ results in two errors for control.py.

(I am also still seeing errors as reported in #35646, but I've edited those out. I haven't seen all tests pass on an OS X machine in months.)

I have these environment variables set:

MAKE='make -j8'
MAKEFLAGS=-j8
SAGE_DOCBUILD_OPTS=' --no-plot'
SAGE_TIMEOUT_LONG=800

I don't think I set anything else that could be relevant.

If I unset MAKE and MAKEFLAGS, then make ptestlong-nodoc TEST_FILES=src/sage/doctest/ produces no failures. I'll try make ptestlong-nodoc. If I unset these and try to compile Sage, it builds the packages serially, and so it takes much longer, although it still doctests in parallel. Is there a good solution to this?

Tests pass with make ptestlong if I don't set MAKE or MAKEFLAGS. (They might have passed without this PR, too — I haven't checked.)

OK, then I think the failures that show as "Doctest interrupted" are a separate issue.

Actually with MAKE and MAKEFLAGS unset, I don't see the errors even without this branch. This won't hurt, though, so we can merge it.
