Con el objetivo de conmemorar los 200 años del nacimiento de Florence Nightingale, precursora de la estadística y epidemiología moderna, y primera mujer admitida en la Royal Statistical Society, el colectivo de Rladies España (nodos de Barcelona, Madrid y Bilbao) en colaboración con la Sociedad Española de Biometría y la Sociedad Catalana de Estadística se complace en anunciar el concurso: “200 AÑOS DE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE”.
El objetivo del concurso consiste en analizar el conjunto de datos que Florence Nightingale utilizó para analizar las causas de mortalidad del ejército británico durante la guerra de Crimea y que sirvió para determinar los factores asociados a la alta mortalidad y reducirla significativamente.
A este premio podrán optar equipos de máximo 3 personas, y que cumplan las siguientes condiciones:
- Al menos una mujer debe formar parte del equipo.
- Se debe utilizar el programa estadístico R para el análisis de los datos.
Enviar un correo electrónico a [email protected] con el asunto “FLORENCE_COMPETITION_2020” indicando los datos del equipo: participantes (nombre del equipo, nombre participantes, y correo electrónico de contacto). Se deben adjuntar al correo:
- El código R utilizado para analizar los datos.
- Una grabación en vídeo presentando los resultados (máx 5 minutos).
- Material suplementario (opcional).
La correcta recepción de los documentos se confirmará vía correo electrónico. El envío puede realizarse también mediante enlace de Dropbox o Wetransfer.
La fecha de comienzo será el 12 de mayo de 2020 (3PM, CEST). La fecha límite de envío de los documentos requeridos para participar al premio será el 12 de AGOSTO de 2020 (11:59PM, CEST).
El comité científico (formado por una representante de la junta de la Sociedad Española de Biometría, una representante de la junta de la y la Sociedad Catalana de Estadística, y tres representantes de Rladies España) seleccionará a los premiados en función de la calidad, presentación y originalidad del análisis de datos realizado. La comunicación de la decisión se realizará en otoño de 2020, en una sesión especial de Rladies.
El trabajo ganador será presentado como comunicación en la próxima Conferencia Española de Biometría que se celebrará en Septiembre de 2021 con sede en Madrid. (Inscripción y bolsa de viaje (max 500€) para una persona). El segundo premio será una bola económica (300€) que se podrá utilizar para este mismo congreso, o para un lote de libros.
- Solo se aceptarán los envíos realizados dentro del periodo especificado en la bases del concurso. Cualquier envío fuera de plazo quedará automáticamente descartado, y no podrá optar a los premios.
- Cada participante solo puede formar parte de un equipo (Solo se permitirá un envío por persona).

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, pioneer of modern statistics and epidemiology, and the first woman admitted to the Royal Statistical Society, the Rladies Spain organization (nodes of Barcelona, Madrid, and Bilbao), in collaboration with the Spanish Biometric Society and the Catalan Statistical Society are pleased to announce the data analysis competition: “200 YEARS OF FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE”.
The competition aims to analyze the data set that Florence Nightingale used to determine the causes of death of the British Army during the Crimean War, and which served to analyze the factors associated with high mortality and to reduce it significantly.
Teams with a maximum of 3 people, and who meet the following conditions, may be eligible for this award:
- At least one woman must be part of the team.
- The R program should be used for data analysis.
Send an email to [email protected] with the subject “FLORENCE_COMPETITION_2020”. The mail must contain the information of the team: (team’s name, name of the participants and contact e-mail), and the following attached files:
- The R code used to analyze the data.
- A video recording presenting the results (max. 5 minutes)
- Supplemental material (optional).
Teams will receive an email indicating the correct reception. Files can be also sent via Dropbox or Wetrabsfer links.
The competition will start on May 12th, 2020 (3 PM, CEST). The deadline for sending the required files to participate in the award will be on AUGUST 12th, 2020 (11:59 PM, CEST).
The Scientific Committee (formed by a representative of the board of the Spanish Biometric Conference, a representative of the board of the Catalan Statistical Society, and three representatives of Rladies Spain) will select the winners considering the quality and originality of the analysis. The decision of the Scientific Committee will be notified to the participants by autumn 2020, in a special session of Rladies.
The winning project will be presented as a communication at the next Spanish Biometric Conference to be held in September 2021, in Madrid. (Registration and “travel bag” of maximum 500 €, included for one person). The second winner will be awarded a "travel bag" (300 €), that can be used for the participation in the conference, or for a pack of books.
- We will only accept those files sent within the submission dates.
- Participants can only be part of one team (only one work per participant would be allowed).
