Problem

Legacy circular layouts and other custom ViewCell layouts were not rendering correctly in MAUI 8.0.3+, showing as elongated cells without proper measurement. This affected compatibility layouts that worked in Xamarin.Forms but broke during the migration to MAUI handlers.

Root Cause

The new ViewCellRenderer handlers in the Compatibility layer were calling handler.MeasureVirtualView() which uses IView.Measure(width, height) without margin inclusion, while the old Xamarin.Forms renderers used renderer.Element.Measure(width, height, MeasureFlags.IncludeMargins) which properly included margins in measurements.

Before (broken):

// New handler - missing margins
var result = handler.MeasureVirtualView(new SizeF(width, height));

After (fixed):

// Restored legacy behavior with margins
if (handler.VirtualView is VisualElement visualElement)
{
    result = visualElement.Measure(width, height, MeasureFlags.IncludeMargins);
}

Solution

Modified both iOS and Android ViewCellRenderer implementations in the Compatibility handlers to:

  1. Check if VirtualView is a VisualElement (which it should be for ViewCells)
  2. Use legacy measurement with MeasureFlags.IncludeMargins when available
  3. Fall back to new measurement method for edge cases
  4. Maintain backward compatibility with Xamarin.Forms behavior

Files Changed

  • src/Controls/src/Core/Compatibility/Handlers/ListView/iOS/ViewCellRenderer.cs - Fixed SizeThatFits method
  • src/Controls/src/Core/Compatibility/Handlers/ListView/Android/ViewCellRenderer.cs - Fixed OnMeasure method
  • src/Controls/tests/TestCases.HostApp/Issues/Issue5.cs - Added test case with ViewCell margins
  • src/Controls/tests/TestCases.Shared.Tests/Tests/Issues/Issue5.cs - Added test verification

Testing

Added comprehensive test coverage including:

  • ViewCells with explicit margins
  • HasUnevenRows scenarios
  • Verification that cells render with correct spacing

The fix ensures that custom circular layouts and other legacy ViewCell layouts that worked in Xamarin.Forms will continue to work correctly in MAUI.

Fixes #5.

@copilot ,

Problem: In .NET MAUI's iOS CollectionView implementation, horizontal layouts (LinearItemsLayout and GridItemsLayout with horizontal orientation) are taking the full available height of their container instead of sizing to their content height. This behavior is inconsistent with Android/Windows where the same layouts correctly size to content.

Root Cause: iOS UICollectionViewCompositionalLayout's default behavior fills available container space, but MAUI's cross-platform expectation is content-based sizing.

Question: Is there a way to make iOS UICollectionViewCompositionalLayout naturally size to content height for horizontal layouts without overriding the native CollectionViewContentSize behavior? The goal is platform-consistent behavior where horizontal CollectionViews size to their tallest cell's height rather than filling available container height.

work on this issue based on above enclosed additional details.

Problem: In .NET MAUI's iOS CollectionView implementation, horizontal layouts (LinearItemsLayout and GridItemsLayout with horizontal orientation) are taking the full available height of ...

I've implemented a fix for the iOS CollectionView horizontal layout sizing issue. The solution modifies the GetSize() method in ItemsViewController to calculate content-based height for horizontal layouts instead of using the container height.

The fix works by:

  • Detecting horizontal scroll direction layouts
  • For fixed sizing: Using ItemSize.Height × span for grids or single item height for linear layouts
  • For dynamic sizing: Finding the maximum cell height from visible cells or measuring a prototype
  • Adding proper spacing calculations for grid layouts

This ensures horizontal CollectionViews on iOS size to their content height (tallest cell) like Android/Windows, rather than filling the available container height.

Implemented in commit d121002.

App crashes because of changing a shared Drawable on the fly. I found
out it is the SearchBar. It only happens on Android and in large apps
with lots of screens. Unfortunately I can't reproduce it in the
TestSuite. But by reading the docs of Android this crash is common and
caused by changing a Drawable which is still referenced. With a custom
SearchBarHandler the issues is resolved.

### Description of Change

- Changes tinting of Androids SearchBar to unified setTint instead of
setColorFilter
- Mutates the drawable before setting the tint.

### Issues Fixed
Issue is fixed with a custom handler for now.
