Problem

An Auto parent cannot change the provider account or resume its own Full-access delegated child after that account runs out of quota. Both MCP operations reject the child's existing runtime mode, leaving its context stranded. Reported on Windows 11 desktop 0.1.6.

Closes #30408.

Change

Let configure, text send and attachment send use a direct app-owned child's existing runtime mode. Ownership requires both the child's subagent lineage and the parent's persisted delegation record. The child's runtime mode is captured at preflight and still checked under the command lock; interaction limits, organization ceilings, link ownership and unrelated targets retain their checks. Sending also honors freshly loaded parent limits if the parent was narrowed after preflight.

This is a deliberate, narrow exception to the named-thread runtime restriction introduced in #16335. Interrupt and recursive task cancellation keep their existing restrictions; users can still stop these children in the client. Tool descriptions now state the exception, with total MCP context shrinking from 47,538 to 47,530 bytes.

Scope and approval

This repairs the existing account-switch and follow-up operations for a parent's own delegated child. Switching accounts preserves the child's already-granted mode. It adds no permission setting, automatic account fallback or account-management UI, and does not grant control over siblings, grandchildren, forged lineage or outside clients. The authorization change is shared server behavior for all clients and providers.

Verification

Tested source head 95a01a950ceff938f7ae4b926c222255f57e2d22, based on fb8e6d8656a2c4ca8e089736593944cd21b4de07, on corex Linux. No app build or paid provider process was used for the runtime proof.

  • Regression cases failed before the fix. The final five-file MCP run passes all 190 tests, including real orchestration/SQLite recovery and deterministic parent-mode races. Command from apps/server: vp test run src/mcp/McpToolAccess.test.ts src/mcp/toolkits/core.test.ts src/mcp/McpToolAccess.race.test.ts src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.test.ts src/mcp/McpHttpServer.test.ts.
  • Both CodeRabbit race findings are fixed. The new table rows incorrectly accepted sends at 17530703822f1cf476b49cec918a2aebf56a0741; they now refuse with no new runs. Locked sends use the freshly loaded effective modes and retain the refusal recorder. An explicit preflight child-mode allowance prevents the parent's old Full-access mode from becoming a child exception.
  • vp run check:changed passes format, lint, both knip stages, GraphQL, three affected package typechecks and 175 tests across nine files.
  • Real in-process MCP handlers, ThreadManagement, orchestration and SQLite reproduce the refusal on baseline 7c22e24e3fa1a3bb3a95f27aea000067f198fe7f. At the final head the same child moves from account A to B, keeps Full-access/default and its lineage, clears snooze and commits a new starting run on B. Unrelated Full-access threads remain denied in the refreshed runtime; the focused access table also retains external-client denials. A parent narrowed before the service reload is denied with no unrelated message persisted. Provider execution is disabled.
  • Two initial Codex review rounds resolved the original findings. A fresh scoped Codex review of the CodeRabbit fixes found no further issues. Model-facing text and the context budget are unchanged by this follow-up.
  • Tool-description evals at prior head 8e09e8f49704aebc66bd97ff6bee4e9f16db90ed, GPT-6.1 Sol at low effort: restart control 3/3; named-thread send 2/3. The failed sample sent correctly but missed the required angle-bracket thread-link formatting. These six samples used no shell simulation; a temporary eval-only loader rejects shell simulation without an Anthropic API key. These are prior-head evidence, not a full run at the rebased head.

Pending: the full MCP eval suite per model required by evals/README.md. No Anthropic API key is available for the Claude models or Haiku shell simulator. Claude subscription routing outside Claude Code is forbidden by fleet, so that is not a fallback. The PR is not ready to merge while this verification is missing.

Not shown: actual Windows desktop, live Claude quota exhaustion/reset, provider session continuation, native background work, or attachment recovery at runtime. No client UI changed.

Current runtime and regression evidence at 95a01a950ceff938f7ae4b926c222255f57e2d22. The two new rows fail before the fix; the real-service runtime now records four refused race scenarios and a successful account-switch recovery.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Parents can now switch accounts and resume their own delegated children even when those children have broader runtime permissions. Human confirmation is needed that retaining this higher-privilege control matches the intended authorization policy.

Walkthrough

Selected MCP operations can target an app-owned delegated child at that child’s runtime mode. The caller’s interaction-mode limit remains in effect. Tests cover access checks, dispatch behavior, and child resumption.

Changes: Delegated child access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Identify owned children and apply access limits
apps/server/src/mcp/threadAccess.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/McpToolAccess.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/McpToolAccess.test.ts
Access checks use thread lineage and app-owned child IDs to identify a caller’s delegated child. The access wrapper applies a higher runtime limit only to qualifying targets. Tests cover owned, forged, and other-thread children, as well as caller and mode limits.
Enforce and wire child runtime limits
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/DispatchModeLimit.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/attachment/*, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/orchestrator/*, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/thread/handlers.ts, apps/server/src/provider/agentContextBudget.json
Thread dispatch uses the elevated runtime limit only for an owned delegated child and continues to validate interaction mode against the caller’s limit. Thread send, attachment send, and model selection opt into the rule. Tool descriptions and the context-budget value are updated.
Verify dispatch and child behavior
apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/core.test.ts
Integration tests verify that a delegated child can be moved to another provider account and resumed with its own modes. They also verify that sends to an unrelated thread or a child are rejected when the parent’s current modes do not permit them.

Explanation

The title "fix(server): let parents recover their delegated children across accounts" matches the main change. The changeset lets a parent's direct app-owned child use its existing runtime mode in configure, text-send, and attachment-send MCP operations, so the parent can recover the child after an account switch. The title is specific and follows the conventional commit format, and it names the server scope.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, and it links the issue #30408. The Problem and Change sections state the failure, the fix, and the ownership checks. Scope explains why the change stays within the existing capability and why no new permission setting is added. Verification lists the focused tests, the check:changed output, and the runtime evidence, and it states what was not verified. The author also states that the PR is not ready to merge while the full MCP eval suite is pending. The template asks for approval, and the description cites the linked issue but not a maintainer approval comment. That gap is minor and does not make the description largely incomplete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#30408] Only #30408 is an active direct target. Its coding requirement: a parent in Auto must be able to configure and message its own Full-access delegated child on another provider instance, with the child's runtime mode preserved. The first suggested fix in the issue matches this requirement. The change implements it. McpToolAccess.ts (writesThreads with options.ownChildren = "at-their-runtime-mode") raises the runtime limit only for a child that passes isOwnDelegatedChild in threadAccess.ts. That check requires the caller lineage (parent is the caller and relationship is "subagent") and a persisted app-owned child mapping. The thread handler (t3_thread_configure model selection), the text-send handler (t3_thread_send), and the attachment-send handler enable this option. OrchestratorMcpService.ts captures the child's preflight runtime mode and repeats the check under the command lock. Interaction limits, organization ceilings, and unrelated-target checks are kept. Parent limits are reloaded before send. Tests in core.test.ts and McpToolAccess.test.ts cover moving the child to another account, resume at its own mode, refusal of unrelated Full-access threads, external-client denial, and a parent narrowed before send. The issue's UI, automatic fallback, and account-management suggestions (third bullet and expected-error wording) are optional alternatives, not required coding objectives. The PR states that these are not added. Interrupt and recursive cancellation keep their restrictions, which the issue does not require to change. Windows desktop and live quota behavior are runtime checks, not coding requirements. Full model eval suites are repository process requirements, not issue requirements. The assessment relies on the whole-PR summary and the PR's reported evidence. No repository inspection was made.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each changed file connects to #30408. McpToolAccess.ts, threadAccess.ts, and OrchestratorMcpService.ts implement the own-child ownership check, the runtime-limit exception, and the locked recheck. The thread, text-send, and attachment handlers enable the exception only for the affected operations. Tool descriptions in thread, orchestrator, and attachment tools state the exception, so the agent-facing contract matches the behavior. agentContextBudget.json changes only because those descriptions changed; the value moves from 47538 to 47530. DispatchModeLimit.ts adds ownChildRuntimeMode, which the new check uses. Test files cover the new authorization paths and the race cases. The PR states that no client UI changed and that no permission setting, fallback, or account-management feature was added. No change was found that is unrelated to #30408. The authorization change applies to all clients and providers, as the PR states. This is a deliberate, scoped consequence of the required behavior and is not an unrelated change. The assessment relies on the whole-PR summary; no file-level diff was inspected.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head 95a01a950ceff938f7ae4b926c222255f57e2d22 on linux with the real dev web client, repository playwright, /usr/bin/google-chrome, and real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. no mocks, replay provider, fixtures, or direct database writes were used to create the scenario.

  • reproduced on github/main (a185dd9248) in a separate worktree after vp i. a full-access parent delegated a full-access child, which completed a real turn. after switching the parent to auto in the client, both t3_thread_configure and t3_thread_send refused its own child with runtime_mode_escalation_denied.
  • stopped main and ran the exact pr head after vp i, using a copy of that app-created development state. the auto parent switched the same child from codex to codex_recovery_b and resumed it. the child recalled its original code word and replied maple-30457 RECOVERED_ON_B.
  • another follow-up completed with FOLLOWUP_OK maple-30457. both configure and send still refused an unrelated full-access thread; the cli confirmed it retained one run and its original provider.
  • t3_thread_send_attachments started the same child, which read the uploaded text file and returned cedar-attachment-30457 maple-30457. the provider sandbox could not curl the server's loopback port, so i posted the exact bytes to its prepared upload url from the vm (http 204), then retried the real mcp send. the initial missing-upload error and successful retry are both retained in the app.
  • the running server's t3 thread show --base-dir /home/user/t3code/.t3 ... --json confirmed provider codex_recovery_b, model gpt-6.1-sol, full-access/default, unchanged parent lineage, and four completed child runs.
  • blacksmith ran vp i, then the five focused mcp files (McpToolAccess, core, McpToolAccess.race, OrchestratorMcpService, McpHttpServer): 190 tests passed across 5 files. existing head ci reports 33/33 successful. no source changes or push were needed.

short transcript from actual provider tool results and the running server:

main: configure own child -> runtime_mode_escalation_denied
main: send own child -> runtime_mode_escalation_denied
head: configure own child -> sequence 199
head: send own child -> delivery started
child: maple-30457 RECOVERED_ON_B
head: configure unrelated -> runtime_mode_escalation_denied
head: send unrelated      -> runtime_mode_escalation_denied
child: FOLLOWUP_OK maple-30457
head: send attachments    -> starting
child: cedar-attachment-30457 maple-30457
cli: full-access/default; codex_recovery_b; runCount 4

before and after use the same parent and child. the large checkpoint diff visible in the captures includes the checkout change between baseline and head; the working tree remained clean. the 16-second recording shows the completed attachment send, opening its child, and the child's full-access setting. it is trimmed and is not timing evidence. uploaded images and video playback/seeking were inspected.

pr head switches the same child and resumes its retained context

live account quota exhaustion/reset or distinct paid account credentials: both real codex provider instances used the vm's same proxy-backed codex home. this proves the permission exception, instance switch, provider continuation, text follow-up, and attachment delivery; it does not prove account-specific authentication rollover. the child was completed rather than quota-failed.

native windows/macOS desktop and ios/android clients, other providers, remote/relay/tunnel connections, and the full model-facing eval suite were not exercised. stale-mode races were covered by the existing focused tests, not forced interactively. the screenshot's generated thread links sometimes displayed "thread no longer available"; the activity button successfully opened the child, as recorded. no changes were made for that separate client-link behavior.
