fix(server): t3 service install works on Linux hosts without a login session - #29923
On a Linux host where the T3 user has no logind session (a Coder workspace, a container reached through docker exec --user, a shell without PAM), t3 service install stopped right away with [user-manager-unavailable]. Two things caused it. The systemd commands inherited a shell with no XDG_RUNTIME_DIR, so systemctl --user could not find the user bus even when the manager was running. And the install never tried the unprivileged loginctl enable-linger, which is what starts user@<uid> on such a host.
Reproduced on main 689bdb8 in a Debian 13 container with systemd as PID 1, as user tester through docker exec --user (XDG_RUNTIME_DIR empty, loginctl show-user reporting "not logged in or lingering"). The install failed, and afterwards Linger was still unset and user@1000 was inactive.
Change
All in apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.ts:
On Linux, when the installer has no XDG_RUNTIME_DIR, the boot service's subprocesses get XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/<uid>. It is read through Config, like HOME and PATH.
The prerequisite check runs loginctl enable-linger --no-ask-password <uid> in two cases: when lingering is disabled (as before), and when logind does not know the user yet and the user manager is down. It then re-checks for the manager for up to about 5 seconds (10 × 500 ms), because lingering starts it asynchronously.
If lingering started the manager, the install re-reads the manager's unit directory. A shell XDG_CONFIG_HOME that differs from the manager's then no longer puts the unit outside the manager's load path.
The old errors stay where lingering cannot help. A host that does not run systemd, or a refused enable-linger on a host without a session, still reports user-manager-unavailable. A user whose lingering is reported disabled still gets linger-disabled. Root under sudo (uid 0 with SUDO_USER) gets neither the runtime-directory fallback nor the lingering path, so sudo t3 service install still refuses instead of reaching or starting a separate root service.
Focused tests in apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.test.ts, written first and failing on main:
Install enables lingering to bring up an unreachable user manager, both when lingering is no and when logind does not know the user.
Every systemd user-scope command gets XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/<uid> when none is set.
The unit is installed into the directory of the manager that lingering starts.
The wait is bounded: the manager comes up after a few probes, or never does (user-manager-unavailable, no unit written).
When lingering cannot start the manager, the reported problem is still user-manager-unavailable.
Root under sudo does not enable lingering (whether logind does not know root or reports its lingering disabled), and does not reach a running root user manager.
Results: vp test run apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.test.ts apps/server/src/cli/service.test.ts passes 59/59. vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck of 3 packages, tests).
Runtime transcript. Each run is on a fresh Debian 13 (systemd 257, polkit 126) container, as tester through docker exec --user with no session, unless noted:

Without a logind session, `service install` refuses with
user-manager-unavailable instead of enabling lingering to start the user
manager, and its systemd user commands get no XDG_RUNTIME_DIR to find the
user bus.

…ithout a login session
Without a logind session (no user@<uid>.service, lingering off,
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR unset), `t3 service install` failed with
user-manager-unavailable before it ever tried to enable lingering, and
its systemd user commands could not find the user bus.
On Linux, systemctl/busctl/systemd-run/loginctl now get
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/<uid> when the installer has none. When
lingering is not on (disabled, or unknown to logind), install tries the
unprivileged enable-linger first, then re-checks with a short bounded
retry while the user manager comes up.
Fixes#29881

… looks for it
Without a login session the user manager is unreachable when the boot service
is constructed, so its unit directory fell back to the installer shell's
XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Once enable-linger brings the manager up it may use another
config root, and `systemctl --user enable` then cannot find the unit. Install
now re-reads the manager's unit directory after the prerequisites bring it up
and uses that for the unit path, plan, writes and status.
Also covers the bounded wait for a manager that starts late or never starts.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This repairs explicitly requested Linux background-service installation on hosts without a login session while retaining prerequisite checks and sudo-root safeguards. The remaining comments concern error guidance and bounded installation delays, rather than material changes to service policy or exposure.

The service installer now supplies a Linux XDG_RUNTIME_DIR fallback when needed. It can enable lingering, wait for the systemd user manager, and refresh its installation target after the manager becomes available.

Runtime environment and target discovery apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.ts, apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.test.ts
Systemd commands use a configured runner that supplies /run/user/<uid> when XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is unset. Target resolution constructs the manager, unit path, and plan together. Tests model runtime-directory requirements and the relevant command behavior.
Lingering and manager startup apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.ts, apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.test.ts
Prerequisite handling can enable lingering when it is disabled or when the manager and linger status are unavailable, except for root under sudo. It polls for the manager at 500 ms intervals, up to ten times. Tests cover success, failure, sudo behavior, and startup timing.
Installation target refresh and status apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.ts, apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.test.ts
After prerequisites pass, the installer rediscovers the unit directory and rebuilds the manager, unit path, and plan when no directory was found initially. Tests cover installation into the manager’s unit directory.
pingdotgg/t3code#29881: The issue describes the Linux install failure addressed by the runtime-directory fallback, lingering enablement, and manager startup polling.
Some failed installations can wait too long or provide incorrect recovery guidance, making the service setup workflow harder to recover.

Explanation
Direct issue #29881 has coding requirements. The PR changes apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.ts to read XDG_RUNTIME_DIR through Config and provide /run/user/<uid> to Linux subprocesses when the value is absent. It enables lingering for an unreachable manager when logind reports no or does not know the user, then polls with ten 500 ms intervals. It re-reads the systemd manager unit directory after the manager becomes available. The added tests cover both linger states, bounded waiting, failure preservation, unit-directory selection, runtime-directory propagation, and root under sudo. The issue requirements are met by the reviewed changes.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed changes are limited to apps/server/src/cloud/bootService.ts and its focused test file. The source changes support issue #29881 by adding the runtime-directory fallback, lingering recovery, bounded manager polling, and manager unit-directory re-resolution. The tests verify these behaviors and preserve the existing root-under-sudo and unavailable-manager errors. No unrelated feature or change is demonstrated.

Give administrative guidance when enabling lingering fails.
If show-user fails while the manager is unreachable, firstProblem is user-manager-unavailable. If polkit then refuses enable-linger, this mapper returns that problem. Its message directs the user to check a login session but does not explain that an administrator may need to enable lingering. Report the failed enable attempt separately, while retaining its cause. Update the BootServicePrerequisiteError mapper to distinguish an enable-linger
failure from the earlier user-manager check failure, so it reports the failed
enable attempt with guidance that an administrator may need to enable lingering.
Preserve the original cause and retain the existing problem mapping for other
failures.

Enforce a deadline for manager startup.
If a systemctl --user probe takes its five-second timeout, this loop can make an initial probe and ten repeats before it fails. The 500 ms schedule limits the gaps between probes, not their total duration. A failed install can therefore wait roughly a minute instead of about five seconds. Bound the complete post-enable polling operation and retain user-manager-unavailable on expiry. (effect.website)

Preserve user-manager-unavailable after a failed enable attempt.
When the initial probes report both user-manager-unavailable and linger-disabled, loginctl enable-linger is attempted. If it fails, keep the pre-change user-manager-unavailable result instead of selecting linger-disabled.

Update the error mapping in the loginctl enable-linger step to preserve

lingerDisabled; when the initial probes report user-manager-unavailable and
linger-disabled, the resulting BootServicePrerequisiteError must retain
user-manager-unavailable.

Re CodeRabbit's follow-up on bootService.ts:784-796 (keep user-manager-unavailable when enable-linger fails with lingering reported disabled): I'm keeping linger-disabled on purpose. Logind reports this user's lingering as disabled, and the unprivileged enable-linger was refused. An administrator enabling lingering is exactly what starts the user manager, so sudo loginctl enable-linger is the actionable advice there. user-manager-unavailable only says to use a login session. The no-session case, where logind doesn't know the user, still reports user-manager-unavailable when enabling fails.
