Problem

Before it reads remote status, Git status starts a background git fetch for the current branch's upstream. Some branches track a local branch whose name contains a slash. This is common in stacked work, for example git checkout -b part-2 --track feature/part-1, which sets branch.part-2.remote = .. For these branches, @{upstream} reads as feature/part-1. resolveCurrentUpstream cannot match that to a configured remote, so it falls back to splitting at the first / and treats feature as the remote name.

So while such a branch is checked out, every status refresh spawns git fetch -- feature. That fetch always fails with 'feature' does not appear to be a git repository, logs Background Git fetch failed, and retries with backoff (30 s, growing to 15 min) for as long as the branch stays checked out. There is nothing to fetch for a local upstream. Ahead/behind counts for these branches already work, because readStatusDetailsRemote compares against the whole upstream ref.

Change

The status refresh now asks Git which remote the branch tracks, with git for-each-ref --format=%(upstream:remotename) on the current branch, which reads branch.<name>.remote. It fetches nothing when the result is empty (no upstream) or . (a local upstream). This holds even when a remote happens to share the local branch's first segment, such as a remote named feature next to a local feature/base. The same %(upstream:remotename) read is already used elsewhere in GitVcsDriverCore.ts and GitManager.ts. It still runs two git reads, as before (symbolic-ref HEAD and for-each-ref). Push still uses resolveCurrentUpstream and is not changed.

Scope and approval

This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so there is no prior issue. It changes one function in GitVcsDriverCore.ts (about 15 lines) and adds one regression test.

Overlap search: I checked the local PR index and GitHub search for local upstream, tracking a local branch, background/status fetch, and refreshStatusUpstreamIfStale. The closest matches don't overlap:

Verification

  • The regression test also adds a remote named feature next to the local feature/base upstream (the CodeRabbit case). On the previous head, which matched configured remote names, it fails with the same fetch of feature.
  • Red on main: the new test does not fetch for status when the branch tracks a local branch fails with AssertionError: expected [ [ '--git-dir', …, 'fetch', '--quiet', '--no-tags', '--no-auto-gc', '--', 'feature' ] ] to deeply equal [].
  • Green: vp test run src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts gives 224 passed and 1 failed. The failure is keeps generated worktree folders short without changing long branch names, a known macOS /var vs /private/var failure that also fails on clean main. The existing can read cached remote divergence without fetching upstream test still shows that a real remote upstream is fetched.
  • vp test run src/git/GitManager.test.ts src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.test.ts gives 182 passed. vp test run src/vcs/VcsStatusBroadcaster.test.ts src/git/GitManager.test.ts gives 135 passed on the current head.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip and typecheck pass. Tests show only the same known macOS failure.
  • I reproduced the fetch with plain git on a scratch repo: git fetch -- feature exits 128 for a branch tracking local feature/base. In the same repo, %(upstream:remotename) prints . for that branch and nothing for a branch without an upstream.
  • Not checked: Windows.

Reviewed with sol-loop: 2 rounds with GPT-6.1 Sol on high (the original change and the configured-remote follow-up). Sol verdict: approved.

Verdict: Approved at 21ae5ac

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Status refresh now distinguishes local upstream branches from actual remotes, avoiding unintended background fetches. Existing fetch safeguards remain unchanged, with no product-default or diagnostic-suppression changes.

Walkthrough

Status refresh reads the current branch’s upstream remote name from Git. It skips refresh for detached branches, branches without an upstream remote, and branches that track a local branch. A test checks local-upstream status and fetch behavior.

refreshStatusUpstreamIfStale reads the upstream remote name and skips refresh when HEAD is detached or the remote name is empty or ".". The test verifies that statusDetailsRemote reports feature/base as the upstream and spawns no fetch command.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: status refresh no longer fetches a remote named after a local tracked branch. The changeset matches this. It changes refreshStatusUpstreamIfStale to read the upstream remote name via for-each-ref and skips fetch for empty or '.' remotes, and adds a regression test for a local feature/base upstream. The title follows conventional commit style and is specific.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section gives the reproduction path, the failing behavior (git fetch -- feature), and the expected behavior. The Change section explains the new for-each-ref read and what it skips. The Scope section justifies the small fix without a prior issue and lists overlap checks. The Verification section gives test commands, a red-then-green result, a known unrelated macOS failure, and what was not checked (Windows). The template's HTML comments are not present in the description, which is acceptable. The description also includes a model/harness attribution line, which the template asks for when an agent was used.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head 7368460ba39dd517950033639129ee968e5d790a on linux using the real dev web app, playwright 1.60.0, /usr/bin/google-chrome, and real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns. the app created the project; provider turns created its repository, branches, commits, and local bare remote. only one dev server ran at a time.

  • reproduced on github/main (57cd05904d): opening git action options on stacked, tracking local feature/base, spawned git fetch -- feature and failed with feature does not appear to be a git repository.
  • on the pr, the same repository and thread refreshed with no fetch, both without a remote and with a real remote named feature. the client still received ahead/behind 1/0.
  • a branch tracking feature/main still fetched. after a separate local clone pushed a commit, the client received behind count 1 and displayed pull. clicking pull brought that exact commit and remote-only.txt into the checkout.
  • a branch without an upstream refreshed successfully with hasUpstream: false and no further fetch.
  • blacksmith: vp test run apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts apps/server/src/vcs/VcsStatusBroadcaster.test.ts passed all 245 tests. no source changes or pushes were needed.

command transcript with git trace and client status messages

screenshots show the same local-upstream data; the fetch difference is recorded in the transcript.

main: stacked tracks local feature/base, ahead 1 behind 0

pr: same repository and thread, local upstream remains usable without a fetch

pr: git status refresh finds a remote commit and the pull action completes

Not verified

native desktop, ios/android, macos/windows, relay/tunnel connections, and hosted remote authentication were not exercised on this linux vm. the remote was a real local bare git repository. exotic trailing unicode whitespace in branch or remote names was not exercised.
