Problem

When a server restart cancels a thread's background work, T3 Code continues the thread with a note listing each cancelled task's label. That note goes to the provider as turn text, for every provider. Labels over 160 characters are cut by UTF-16 code unit. If the cut falls inside an emoji such as 🚀 (in a long shell command, subagent prompt or task description), the note carries a lone surrogate.

Strict JSON parsers reject that. Codex app-server 0.160 drops the whole request (Failed to deserialize JSONRPCMessage: unexpected end of hex escape) and never answers it, so the restart continuation never reaches the agent. This is the same failure #29168 fixed for Codex background-command wakes.

Change

compactLabel in RestartBackgroundNote.ts steps the cut back one unit when the last kept unit would be a high surrogate. This is the same check boundedText uses in packages/provider-core/src/server/failure.ts. Labels stay within their budget, and nothing else changes.

Scope and approval

This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so there is no prior issue. One cut site in the restart note sends half an emoji to providers whose parsers reject it.

Overlap search: the local PR index and gh search prs "RestartBackgroundNote". Open #26861 and #24538 edit this file but not compactLabel. #24611 fixes the shared truncate helper, which this file doesn't use. #29633 and #29168 fix other cut sites.

Verification

  • Red on main: one assertion added to the existing "names a lost subagent by the id the agent resumes it with" case (a 158-character description followed by 🚀). Result: AssertionError: expected false to be true.
  • Green: vp test run src/orchestration-v2/RestartBackgroundNote.test.ts, 6 passed.
  • vp run check:changed passes format, lint, knip, typecheck and tests.
  • Runtime check against a real codex app-server 0.160 in an isolated CODEX_HOME, with no model calls. An initialize request whose text ends in a lone high surrogate got no response and logged unexpected end of hex escape. The same request without the half emoji was answered.
  • Not checked: how the Anthropic API handles the Claude path. I didn't run a full server restart with live background work.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at d3532ee

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Long background-task labels now avoid splitting an emoji when truncated in restart notes. The change is confined to label formatting and preserves existing workflow behavior and length limits.

Walkthrough

compactLabel now adjusts its truncation boundary to avoid leaving a lone high surrogate before the ellipsis. A regression test covers a command description with an emoji near that boundary.

compactLabel shortens the slice by one code unit when the truncation boundary would leave a high surrogate. The test checks a description with an emoji near the boundary.

Handle a lone low surrogate at the truncation boundary.

compactLabel steps back only when the retained last code unit is a high surrogate. A lone low surrogate at the same position is kept. The truncated label then ends with an unpaired surrogate before the ellipsis. The restart note serializes that surrogate as a lone-surrogate escape, which the existing code comment says provider JSON parsers reject.

Suggested fix
-  const last = text.charCodeAt(maxLength - 2);
-  const end = last >= 0xd800 && last <= 0xdbff ? maxLength - 2 : maxLength - 1;
+  const last = text.charCodeAt(maxLength - 2);
+  const beforeLast = text.charCodeAt(maxLength - 3);
+  const lastIsHigh = last >= 0xd800 && last <= 0xdbff;
+  const lastIsUnpairedLow =
+    last >= 0xdc00 && last <= 0xdfff && !(beforeLast >= 0xd800 && beforeLast <= 0xdbff);
+  const end = lastIsHigh || lastIsUnpairedLow ? maxLength - 2 : maxLength - 1;

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified unchanged head d3532eecda5656681dca905a7e0623a8a236efa5 on Linux with the real dev web client, repository Playwright, /usr/bin/google-chrome, Codex CLI 0.164.0 and real gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local provider proxy. Created the project and threads through the app; no mocked provider or seeded scenario.

On github/main (71646e031a), launched a background command, restarted the server, and sent the next user message. The persisted restart note ended in \ud83d… (isWellFormed() === false, length 160). That real Codex turn remained Thinking with no answer for over one minute before stopping the main server.

Repeated on this PR using the same command: : + 141 literal d characters + 🚀; timeout 300 sleep 240. Codex stores a 15-character shell wrapper, placing the emoji at the truncation boundary. After restart, the persisted label was well formed, length 159, ending in d…. The next real provider turn quoted the cancelled command label and answered RECOVERED.

Nearby behavior also passed after another restart: 140 d characters retained the entire 🚀… at length 160; a short command label remained unchanged. Codex quoted both labels and answered NEIGHBORS_RECOVERED. An ASCII-only truncation on main also continued successfully.

Blacksmith passed the six focused restart-note tests and vp run check:changed 30084f0018c5751a07291222e8d04e16d513700a: format, lint, knip, GraphQL, affected typechecks and seven tests. Existing PR CI is green. No source changes or push were needed.

Native desktop, iOS and Android clients; macOS/Windows; providers other than Codex; native subagent/monitor labels; automatic continuation of awaited background work. This run exercised ordinary native Codex background commands and restart-note delivery on the next user turn. The main stall was bounded to the observed minute, not a ten-minute timeout. Uploaded video playback and seeking were checked in Chrome. GitHub renders the external MP4 image markup as a broken image; the uploaded MP4 itself plays correctly, and both evidence screenshots render in this comment.
