fix(server): coalesced webhook deliveries run the task's current prompt - #29479
A coalesced webhook delivery keeps the task prompt from the start of its window. The first request stores a task snapshot in scheduled_task_webhook_pending; later requests update only the request. When the window closes, the pending drain renders that snapshot's prompt, so a prompt edited during the window runs with the old instructions while model and thread settings come from the current task. Details and line references are in #29440.
Change
On the first dispatch of a pending row, the drain loads the current task and renders its prompt. Before it starts the run, it writes that prompt into the row's existing task_json snapshot (json_set, no migration). A row in state running is retried when dispatch succeeded but completion bookkeeping failed; that retry renders from the snapshot and does not load the task again. So a later edit, or an oversized prompt, cannot change the logged prompt of a run that already started or release its replay claim.
The snapshot still goes to runWebhookDelivery for the replacement check, which is unchanged. A task deleted during the window now fails at the prepare step with "The pending webhook payload could not be prepared." instead of "The task was deleted before this delivery ran."; in both cases the delivery fails and its replay claim is released, because no run started. The immediate path is not touched.
docs/user/project-settings.md now says the run uses the task's prompt at its first dispatch and a retry keeps that prompt.
One block in the pending drain of ScheduledTaskService.ts, tests and two documentation sentences. The second commit addresses the CodeRabbit finding on retries of a running row. The open PR #23579 moves the same block into a shared drain; whichever lands second needs the prompt choice and the snapshot write carried into that helper.
Verification
a running coalesced retry keeps its first prompt and replay claim after edits (new): edits the prompt after a dispatch whose completion bookkeeping fails, then retries after a normal and an oversized edit. On the first commit of this PR it fails with expected 'Later instructions.' to equal 'First dispatch instructions.'; with the second commit it passes. Rendering from the current task for running rows, or dropping the snapshot write, makes it fail again.
coalesces %i deliveries into one run with the latest body, headers and query: now edits the prompt during the window and checks the launched message and the delivery log. Before the fold, the separate test for this case failed on main with expected 'Use the original instructions.' to equal 'Use the updated instructions.'.
vp test run src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.webhook.test.ts: 55 of 55 passed, including restart recovery of a persisted window and the immediate path.
vp run check:changed: format, lint and tests pass; knip (two passes), graphql and typecheck (server, scripts, evals) pass when run directly.
Not checked: a live app run of an edit during a window or of a retry (service tests and source read only).

Walkthrough
The changes add webhook coalescing tests for prompt selection and replay behavior after completion bookkeeping fails. The documentation clarifies which prompt a dispatch and its retries use.
Changes: Webhook coalescing prompt behavior
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Verify dispatch prompt and replay behavior apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.webhook.test.ts, docs/user/project-settings.md
Tests verify that dispatch uses the updated prompt and that later prompt edits do not change the recorded prompt or release the replay claim after bookkeeping fails. Documentation states that retries retain the first dispatch prompt.
Retries retain the first-dispatch instructions after edits. No merge-blocking risk remains.

Explanation
The title "fix(server): coalesced webhook deliveries run the task's current prompt" matches the main change. The PR changes the pending webhook drain so the first dispatch loads the task's current prompt and stores it in the task_json snapshot. The title is a conventional commit, short, and specific. It does not cover the docs or the retry handling, which is expected.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section explains the stale prompt bug and links #29440. The Change section explains the drain logic, the snapshot write, the retry behavior, and the deletion error change. The Scope section links the issue, lists the files touched, and notes the overlap with open PR #23579. The Verification section lists specific test names, results, and an explicit list of what was not checked. The template asks for the model and harness used, and the author gives them at the end. The Scope section does not explain why the fix qualifies without a maintainer-approved issue beyond the linked issue #29440, which is closed. The description is mostly complete.

The existing coalescing table already asserts the launched prompt and delivery log. Add the prompt edit before dispatch as a table case or shared step. This follows the “Extend before you add” testing rule.

Fold the prompt-edit-during-coalescing scenario into the existing coalescing
test table in the surrounding test suite. Update the table or its shared setup
to edit the prompt before dispatch, and preserve the existing assertions for the
launched prompt and delivery log instead of keeping a separate `it.effect` case.
A prompt edit after dispatch could change a running delivery's log on retry.
An oversized edit could also release the replay claim for a run that already started.
Save the first dispatch prompt in the pending snapshot and reuse it for running retries.
Fold dispatch-time prompt edits into the coalescing table and clarify retry behavior in the guide.
Tests:
- a running coalesced retry keeps its first prompt and replay claim after edits
- coalesces %i deliveries into one run with the latest body, headers and query
- recovers a persisted coalescing window after restarting the service
Pushed a6b81db for the CodeRabbit finding on retries of a running delivery.
A retry of a running pending row now renders from its stored task snapshot and does not load the task again. The first dispatch writes the prompt it used into that snapshot (json_set on task_json, no migration). So a retry after failed completion bookkeeping keeps the logged prompt and the replay claim, also after an edit or an oversized prompt.
The edit-during-window case is now a step in the existing coalescing table. A new test covers the running retry with a normal and an oversized edit. It fails on the previous head.
The user guide now says the run uses the prompt of its first dispatch and a retry keeps it.

merged current main without rebasing and pushed to the existing contributor head without force. main already contains the production prompt fix, so conflict resolution retains its task-identity guard and snapshot persistence. the remaining diff is the contributor's regression coverage and docs: 60 additions, one deletion in two files.
the retry review finding is addressed: running retries keep their stored prompt and replay claim. resolved the bot thread.

ci reports 28 successful checks, zero pending or failing. github reports MERGEABLE and CLEAN. two independent read-only reviews approved this head without findings.
no production or ui code differs from main. the earlier live-provider evidence below is historical; browser/provider checks were not repeated for this merge. no dev servers were started in this pass.

verified as-is at a6b81db51c46723ac11b5730da88a56b83468397 on a disposable linux vm. used repository playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome, isolated dev state, and real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. projects and tasks were created through the app. no mocks, fixtures, or database writes.
reproduced on github/main (9f6326812c): sent a two-request webhook burst, edited the prompt during its window, and saved. the launched message still said ORIGINAL_WEBHOOK; codex replied ORIGINAL_WEBHOOK.
repeated on this head: the launched message used UPDATED_WEBHOOK; codex replied UPDATED_WEBHOOK. the rendered delivery prompt exactly matched the saved thread message. latest body, header, and query values all reached the provider. the burst started one run.
replaying the same request key logged Duplicate with no additional thread/run.
clearing coalescing and saving a new prompt preserved immediate dispatch. codex replied IMMEDIATE_WEBHOOK.

completion-bookkeeping failure and subsequent running-row retries were not induced in the live app. their existing regression test passed, including later normal/oversized prompt edits and replay-claim preservation. native desktop, ios/android, and remote relay/tunnel paths were not exercised on this linux web-client pass.

Problem
A coalesced webhook delivery keeps the task prompt from the start of its window. The first request stores a task snapshot in
scheduled_task_webhook_pending; later requests update only the request.
