fx child threads currently omit the child's individual steps and show only a roughly 200-byte reply preview. This PR uses fx's existing hook protocol to project the child's narration, tools and full reply through T3's existing child-thread path.

Replaces #27002, whose final implementation and evidence are retained here. GitHub rejected reopening with HTTP 422: “state cannot be changed. The fx-subagent-hooks branch was force-pushed or recreated.” Restoring the archived head temporarily did not permit reopening either; the branch is restored to the validated rebased head.

Latest review follow-up

0c9e646 corrects a regression introduced by the preceding child-message replacement: native Grok chunks without message IDs share the fallback result identity and were mistaken for a synthesized reply. The adapter now tracks whether that fallback message was synthesized. Native writes to the same slot and new child executions clear the marker, preserving narration while still replacing synthetic fx previews with full results.

The existing grok_subagent_lineage replay failed before the fix and passes afterward with its original expectations. All 26 Grok/fx replay cases and the finalized child-message regression passed. vp run check:changed HEAD --concurrency 2 passed formatting, lint, both Knip passes, 13 affected-package typechecks and the adjacent adapter test; git diff --check passed. Native-child validation receipt.

CI on 1fa593a failed Test Server 6 because Grok’s child narration was replaced by its final summary; that failure was reproduced and fixed above. 0c9e646 awaits fresh CI and bot review. Maintainer capture-policy approval and fresh integrated UI/real-fx proof remain unresolved.

1fa593a added replacement of the child result message with stable identity. Its assumption that the fallback ID identified a synthetic result was incorrect for native chunks without IDs; the latest correction above supersedes that behavior. The parent/turn-item fixes, stable child message identity, completion time and duplicate/null suppression remain.

The extended regression failed before the fix because child message.updated events contained only the preview. vp run check:changed HEAD --concurrency 2 passed 88 adjacent tests, 13 affected-package typechecks, formatting, lint, both Knip passes and GraphQL checks; git diff --check passed. Child-message validation receipt.

CI on the preceding 3ca3a2a failed a different existing web case: MessagesTimeline’s worked-for heading could not be clicked because a LegendList content container intercepted pointer events. The other 5,411 web tests passed. The relevant web files are unchanged by this PR, and that exact case passed in an isolated Chromium run. This does not establish the CI failure’s cause; no web patch, timeout increase or job retry was made. 1fa593a’s CI result and its correction are reported above. Maintainer capture-policy approval and fresh integrated UI/real-fx proof remain unresolved.

3ca3a2a fixes the additional finalized-context guard: after successful parent finalization, a different non-null child result can replace its earlier preview. Duplicate/null updates stay suppressed, non-completed finalizations retain their behavior, and completion timestamps stay stable.

The existing finalization regression failed before the fix and now checks both child and turn-item results, duplicate/null suppression, parent completion, and background-work cleanup. It awaits the terminal event rather than yield/poll loops. vp run check:changed HEAD --concurrency 2 passed formatting, lint, both Knip passes, GraphQL checks, 13 affected-package typechecks, and 88 adjacent tests; git diff --check passed. Finalized-result validation receipt.

The preceding 1a05dfb removes duplicate child-tool completion updates: tool.end emits the update and the later tool.result is ignored for child routing. Both recorded events remain in regression input, and the single-update assertion failed before the fix. Its three router tests, recorded fx_subagent_hooks replay and scoped checks passed. CI and both code-review checks passed on 1a05dfb; 3ca3a2a’s CI/review results are superseded by the latest follow-up above. Those earlier runs performed no interactive UI/device or real-fx verification; the later isolated Chromium check is reported above. Maintainer capture-policy approval remains unresolved. Historical UI/CLI evidence retains its stated limits.

Scope and reconsideration

The failure was already defined in the original PR and demonstrated by the before/after captures below: a child has no tool steps and its reply stops after a couple of lines. I disagree with closing this already documented failure under the problem/scope requirement. The closure explanation raises a separate, unresolved decision: maintainer agreement on enabling content capture, its volume/lifecycle tradeoffs and reload behavior. This replacement requests reconsideration; it does not assert that the proposed solution has maintainer approval.

The branch is rebased onto upstream ac8dce0cc3abd8a337f2d806b5082a6834b9b81a. The static shared AcpSessionRuntime.sessionMeta change has been dropped: merged #26968 already provides the callback API receiving negotiated agent information, and fx now uses that API. The shared runtime API, UI, settings and wire contracts remain unchanged. A follow-up in the shared ACP adapter permits a terminal task to receive a richer late result while retaining its terminal status and completion time.

#26998 independently changes fx result decoding/interruption and #26994 is being revived separately; this PR does not import their branches. #26998 overlaps the result decoder moved from adapter.ts into subagents.ts, so whichever lands second needs reconciliation there. Historical #26969 also touched the fx tests/fixtures. These are source overlaps, not evidence that the PRs must ship together.

Behavior and limits

  • fx opts into _meta.fx.hooks.captureContent on session setup and consumes hooks only after the response confirms hooksVersion: 1 (fx 0.0.14+). Sessions without confirmation retain their ACP-only projection, including the existing fx 0.0.13/0.0.14 recordings.
  • Delegation dispatch maps the child session to its existing subagent thread. Child tool start/end/result and agent narration become steps/messages. Review, compaction and title model calls are ignored; grandchildren remain within their parent's subagent step.
  • The root call's first whole tool.end or tool.result supplies the reply. tool.end avoids waiting for the slowest parallel call. The {ok, result} wrapper is decoded; replies cut by fx at 64 KiB carry a truncation note. Successful completion waits for that result after ACP completes. Failed, yielded and cancelled delegation phases now settle before output exists; yielded maps to idle.
  • Capture is all-or-nothing, including events T3 does not display. Unused events are dropped at decode rather than logged or persisted by the router. Hook state is held in memory; projected child steps/messages use existing durable projection. The recorder strips model.start request content and preserves the final-head normalization of T3-owned text echoed in turn.start.
  • fx 0.0.15 reload replays finished calls with clipped previews and no steps. Existing projected child threads are left alone; subsequent calls use newly confirmed hooks. T3 uses one fx process per thread and switches sessions at turn start, before sending the prompt, because fx disallows switching during a prompt.
  • The Sub-agents section in docs/user/providers-fx.md describes these limits. This server/provider projection feeds web, desktop and mobile, including remote connections; no new client entry point or mutation is introduced. Other providers do not opt into fx hooks.

Current verification

  • Follow-up 64bb64b95e485cc3db520442b718c92c087412e3 addresses the late terminal-result finding. An adapter regression failed before the fix and now passes for failed/cancelled children with null or clipped initial results. Four existing shared-adapter subagent tests also passed. vp run check:changed HEAD --concurrency 2 passed before committing: formatting, lint, both Knip passes, GraphQL checks, all 13 affected-package typechecks and 10 adjacent tests. The user guide and adapter comment now describe ACP-only fallback by absent hook confirmation, rather than a version cutoff.
  • Follow-up 7973145e5dec33cc02fc601a818619061ebd5f14 fixes Macroscope’s nested-delegation finding. A child’s nested subagent start and completion now stay ordinary tool steps with their title and arguments. The existing router regression failed before the fix and passes afterward; all 3 router tests and vp run check:changed HEAD --concurrency 2 passed before committing (format, lint, both Knip passes, 10 affected-package typechecks, and 4 adjacent tests). Review response.
  • The terminal-phase regression failed first: failed, yielded and cancelled all returned running without hook output, both with and without an ACP preview. The fix keeps the existing tool-failure precedence and successful-result wait, while settling these terminal phases first.
  • From packages/provider-fx: vp test run --config ../../vite.config.ts src/server/subagents.test.ts — all 3 tests pass.
  • From apps/server: vp test run src/orchestration-v2/testkit/FxReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts — all 10 replay scenarios pass.
  • vp run check:changed ac8dce0cc3abd8a337f2d806b5082a6834b9b81a --concurrency 1 — passes format, lint, both knip passes, server GraphQL generation, typechecks for 10 affected packages, and all 10 tests in 4 selected files. git diff --check also passes.
  • Initial rebase validation receipt. Current-head CI and bot review are separate gates.

No manual browser/device verification, dev server or paid provider turn was run for this revival. The initial repository-root unit command initialized unrelated headless browser harnesses; no UI assertions or refreshed UI evidence came from it. The following captures and live recordings are prior evidence, not refreshed runtime proof of this rebased head.

Prior evidence retained

  • Successful CI run 40899237674, on original final head 317f91fd698c75eae66c2733303c8e44418865e5. This is later evidence than the original local report of two unrelated macOS /private/var failures; it does not establish current-head CI status.
  • fx_subagent_hooks is the retained live fx 0.0.15 recording of two parallel children reading seeded files. Its replay asserts named read steps, one full reply over 200 bytes per child, and no child reply in the parent.
  • The reload adapter test uses fx 0.0.15's captured session/load replay of finished calls; it checks that prior children remain untouched and the next child has steps/reply. Nine older fixtures request capture but do not confirm hooks, covering the fallback. Router tests exercise the ACP merge with recorded event ordering, truncation, failure, yield and cancellation.
  • Historical manual comparison used released fx 0.0.15 against then-main and this branch in the package.json child's thread. Evidence release.

Before (historical main): task and clipped reply ending at “Vite…”, with no steps.

Before: fx child thread with clipped reply and no steps

After (historical branch): child narration, the read step and full reply.

After: fx child narration, read step and full reply

Earlier CI at 64bb64b reported a web-test failure: the existing PDF scroll/zoom test stays at “Loading file” after switching file paths (AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx:2573). All other 5,411 web tests and provider/server checks passed. The web implementation, test and its fixtures are unchanged by this PR; the cause is not established. That earlier failure was superseded by passing CI at 1a05dfb; the cause was not established. Current validation and review status are reported above.

Original implementation: Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code (T3 Code). Revival, rebase and regression fix: GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex.

fx clips every ACP tool result to a 200-byte preview and streams no
sub-agent frames, so an fx sub-agent's thread held only its task and a
cut-off reply.

T3 now opts into fx's libfx hooks on session/new, load and resume, and
uses them only when fx confirms hooksVersion 1. Older fx keeps the
ACP-only view. A dispatched child's tool calls and its narration between
them become steps in its existing child thread, and its reply comes whole
from the root call's tool.end or tool.result. Delegation phases drive the
child's status. Unused events, including model.start request content, are
dropped at decode and nothing retains them. Child events are followed only
while their call runs, so a reload, which replays finished calls without
their steps, leaves projected threads alone.

The new fx_subagent_hooks fixture is a live fx 0.0.15 recording, and an
adapter test plays fx's recorded load replay. Existing fx fixtures now
expect the opt-in and cover fx not confirming it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
fx echoes the whole prompt as the libfx/hook turn.start input, so the
fx_subagent_hooks recording kept T3's instructions and runtime
instructions there, though the transcript header says T3-owned prompt
text is normalized. The recorder now applies the same placeholders to
that echo as to the outbound prompt, and the fixture's one turn.start
frame is rewritten the same way.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This enables fx content capture by default so child threads show tool steps, narration and fuller replies. A maintainer needs to confirm that default and its content-volume and persistence tradeoffs.

Subagent threads can still show the clipped preview instead of the full reply when the full result arrives after the parent turn settles or as a partial hook update. Replies that arrive while the root is still finalizing are handled. Fix these late-arrival paths before merging.

Explanation

The title "feat(fx): subagent threads show child steps and full replies" matches the main change in the changeset. The raw summary shows the fx hook-based projection of child narration, tool steps, and full replies into existing subagent threads, plus the related test and fixture updates. It is a conventional commit title in plain language, and it names the primary behavior change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the required template sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. It explains the problem (child threads omit individual steps and show only a roughly 200-byte reply preview) and describes the change through the fx hook protocol. It gives a scope discussion and cites a closure explanation, and it links validation receipts and a before/after capture. The Verification section lists focused commands and their results, and it states what was not checked, including manual browser/device verification and a fresh real-fx run. The description is long and dense, and it mixes history from prior revivals with current state. It also leaves maintainer capture-policy approval unresolved. Those issues are not critical omissions, because the required sections are present and substantively filled.

Nitpick Handle child tool completion once. Both tool.end and tool.result currently emit a toolcallupdate.

328-329: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Handle child tool completion once. Both tool.end and tool.result currently emit a tool_call_update.

The fx_subagent_hooks recording (lines 70-71) shows fx sends both events for every child tool call, with identical call, output and status. The router therefore emits two identical updates per child tool call. subagents.test.ts Lines 169-170 assert the duplicate.

The root route already uses tool.end because it arrives at once. A child route that handles only tool.end gives the same result with half the events. This also follows the performance guideline to avoid sending extra data.

♻️ Proposed change
-      case "tool.end":
-      case "tool.result": {
+      case "tool.end": {

Then remove the second "tool_call_update call_read completed" row and the matching tool.result hook in the first test of subagents.test.ts.

As per coding guidelines: "Make sure all changes are considerate of performance impact."

Outside diff Preserve a changed full result after turn finalization.

Preserve a changed full result after turn finalization.

When FX sends the full tool.end result after the terminal preview, the finalized-turn guard returns before emitSubagent. The child thread can therefore retain only the clipped preview.

Allow a different non-null result through this guard, while preserving duplicate suppression and non-completed finalization behavior.

Suggested guard fix
             if (acpSubagentStatusIsTerminal(subagent.task.status)) {
-              if (subagent.terminalStatusProjected || context.finalizedStatus !== "completed") {

+                (subagent.terminalStatusProjected &&
+                  (update.result === null || update.result === subagent.task.result)) ||
+                context.finalizedStatus !== "completed"
+              ) {
                 return true;
               }
             }

Add a replay case where the terminal preview finalizes the parent turn before FX delivers the full root result. Assert that the changed result reaches the stored subagent and child thread.

Fixed the duplicate child completion finding in 1a05dfb. Child tools now emit completion on tool.end; the later tool.result does not emit the same update again. The regression keeps both hook events as input and expects one completed update. It failed before the fix and now passes, including the nested-tool checks.

All three router tests, the recorded fx_subagent_hooks replay, and check:changed passed (10 package typechecks, four adjacent tests, formatting, lint, and both Knip passes). The fallback wording was already corrected in 64bb64b and accepted in the documentation thread. Fresh CI and current-head review remain pending.

Permit changed terminal results in the finalized-context path.

fx first reports the subagent call as completed with its clipped ACP preview. It then reports the full hook result. When this second update arrives after the root is finalized, applyTerminal returns because the child is already terminal and projected. The changed guard in emitSubagent is not reached, so the child keeps the earlier clipped result.

Fixed the finalized-context result loss from the latest outside-diff review in 3ca3a2a. applyTerminal now lets a changed, non-null result reach emitSubagent after successful root finalization. Duplicate/null updates remain suppressed; non-completed finalizations keep their previous behavior.

The extended existing finalization test failed before the fix: it emitted only the preview. It now verifies the child and turn-item updates receive the full result exactly once, preserving completedAt, root completion and the cleared background-work pin. It awaits the terminal event instead of using yield/poll loops. All 88 adjacent tests and check:changed passed, including 13 package typechecks. Validation receipt. New-head CI/review is pending; no fresh UI or real-provider run is claimed.

Update the child reply when the terminal result changes.

When the result changes from SECOND_DONE to SECOND_FULL_RESULT, the existing subagent.assistantText prevents another result message.updated event. The parent task and turn item receive the new result, but the child thread can retain SECOND_DONE.

Replace the existing child result message when the result changes. Extend the regression assertion to inspect the child message.updated event, not only subagent.updated and turn_item.updated.

Fixed the child result-message issue from the follow-up review in 1fa593a. When a synthetic result message already exists, a changed terminal result replaces that same message through message.updated. Separate native assistant messages are preserved.

The existing finalization regression now checks child message text and stable message identity alongside task/turn-item results. It failed before the fix because the child emitted only SECOND_DONE. All 88 adjacent tests and check:changed passed (13 package typechecks, formatting, lint, both Knip passes and GraphQL). Validation receipt.

The prior head’s Test Web failure is a different case: MessagesTimeline’s “keeps the worked-for heading in place when expanded at the bottom” could not click the heading because a LegendList content container intercepted pointer events. All other 5,411 web tests passed. The affected web files are unchanged by this PR, and that exact case passed in an isolated Chromium run. This does not establish the CI failure’s cause; no web change, timeout increase or job retry was made. New-head CI and review remain pending.

Fixed the Test Server 6 regression in 0c9e646. My preceding replacement guard mistook native Grok chunks without message IDs for a synthesized result and replaced their narration with the final task summary. The adapter now tracks whether the fallback message was synthesized, clearing that marker when native output writes the same slot or a new child execution begins.

The existing grok_subagent_lineage replay failed before the fix and passes afterward without changing its expectations. All 26 Grok/fx replay cases, the finalized child-message regression, and check:changed passed (13 package typechecks, formatting, lint, both Knip passes and the adjacent adapter test). Full fx results still replace synthetic previews under the same message identity. Validation receipt. Fresh CI and bot review are pending.

@coderabbitai resume

Automatic review paused at 3ca3a2aba837; please review latest head 0c9e646c47eb. The later commits replace changed synthetic child-result messages while preserving native assistant output. The child-message regression and the Grok/fx replay cases pass, and latest-head CI is green.

The original outside-diff finding has a fix receipt; the subsequent native-message correction has its validation receipt. Maintainer approval for automatic capture remains separate.

Keep the message stream open across the notice, or ensure any split segments have distinct identities and preserve all text. Check regression coverage for two chunks with the same messageId separated by a notice.

## Verifying

- Test behavior that can break, such as orchestration and event-sourcing, provider protocol translation, auth and permission guards, persistence and migrations, external-format parsing, race fixes, and the logic a bug fix changed. Leave out tests for what types already guarantee, trivial logic, copy text, smoke runs, mock-call mirrors, callback wiring, and props rendered to static markup.

Outside diff Retain completed children for late result updates.

7390-7393: Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Heavy lift

Retain completed children for late result updates.

If the child completes with a preview before the root settles, this filter excludes it from carryover. After activeTurn is cleared, a full result cannot find that child and the preview remains visible. Retain completed children for late result projection without counting them as pending work. Also allow updateCarryoverSubagentStatus to project changed results.

Update the carryover selection using acpSubagentHasPendingBackgroundWork so
completed children with preview results remain available for late result
projection, while still excluding them from pending-work counts. Update
updateCarryoverSubagentStatus to project changed results for those retained
children after activeTurn is cleared.
Outside diff Merge the earlier tool state before extracting a finalized FX subagent update.

5906-5907: Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Merge the earlier tool state before extracting a finalized FX subagent update.

On the finalized path, flavor.normalizeToolCall is not a name source for FX. A partial FX hook tool_call_update can therefore reach extractFxSubagentUpdate without a name and be dropped. The terminal full-result update is then lost. Merge event.toolCall with the stored tool state first, then normalize the merged value. This is the same order emitTool uses.

Suggested fix
-              const toolCall = flavor.normalizeToolCall?.(event.toolCall) ?? event.toolCall;
+              const merged = mergeToolCallState(context.tools.get(event.toolCall.toolCallId), event.toolCall);
+              const toolCall = flavor.normalizeToolCall?.(merged) ?? merged;

On the finalized path, merge the partial event.toolCall with its stored state
from context.tools before calling flavor.normalizeToolCall, then pass the
normalized result to extractSubagentUpdate. Follow the existing merge order used
by emitTool so FX updates with missing names retain the information needed for
extraction.

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified unchanged head 0c9e646c47ebc62075b848e998404adcb82994fe on a Linux Boat VM using the real web client, repository Playwright, Google Chrome, fx 0.0.16 and real gpt-6.1-sol calls through the local proxy. fx used its supported custom-provider configuration. Projects, threads and turns were created through the app; no replay, mocks or demo data were used.

Reproduced on github/main (60aec28a9c) in a separate installed worktree before starting the PR server. A native fx child ran git rev-parse --is-inside-work-tree and read package.json lines 1–12, then returned twelve observations. Main displayed a 178-character preview ending in an ellipsis, with zero child tool steps. On the PR, the same inspection displayed narration, both completed tools and the full 1,427-character reply including FX_CHILD_FULL_REPLY_END_29389. The parent completed normally.

Nearby checks passed: browser reload preserved the reply and tool steps; a second child in the same fx thread displayed both tools and its full 1,466-character reply with FX_FOLLOWUP_END_29389; its parent completed. A real Codex gpt-6.1-sol command turn also completed on main and on the PR server, reporting a valid worktree and clean Git status.

The three existing fx hook tests and the existing ACP changed-full-result finalization regression passed through Blacksmith. Current-head CI has no failed or pending checks. No source changes or pushes were needed.

main: clipped child reply and no tool steps

pr: child narration, tools and complete reply with end marker

pr: expanding child steps and command details

Runtime transcript and persisted child-item counts.

Not verified

Native iOS/Android and Electron shells, relay/tunnel connections, fx OAuth backends and other fx versions were not exercised. The real-provider pass did not cover 64 KiB truncation, parallel children, nested children, yielded/failed hook paths, or late results after the parent context has been cleared. The focused finalization regression covers its existing synthetic scenario only. Real Grok behavior was not exercised. This verification does not resolve the separate maintainer decision about automatic content capture.

The documented supervised-child permission limitation was encountered on main; that attempt was stopped and the successful comparison used Auto. Uploaded video playback and seeking were checked in Chrome; the T3 media player was not exercised.
