fix(server): committing a large file selection no longer fails with spawn E2BIG - #28850
Committing a selection of files passes every selected path to git add as a command-line argument. A large selection with long paths goes past the OS argument limit (2 MiB on Linux, 1 MiB on macOS), so the commit fails with spawn E2BIG before Git stages anything. Committing everything still works, because that path runs git add -A with no paths.
Change
git add -A for selected files now reads its pathspecs from stdin with --pathspec-from-file=- --pathspec-file-nul, NUL-delimited, the same way this file already sends paths over stdin elsewhere. Each path keeps its :(top, literal) prefix, so paths stay repository-relative from a nested working directory and glob characters stay literal. The temporary-index env, -A behavior and error reporting are unchanged. Merge and reset handling and stage-all are untouched. Selected paths containing NUL bytes are rejected before staging, so they cannot introduce extra pathspecs or change the live index.
Scope and approval
No linked issue. This is a reliability fix to an existing workflow, under the focused obvious-bug case in CONTRIBUTING's prior-approval section. It changes one git add call and adds no setting or default.
Verification
vp run check:changed 1d626d02d passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck and both changed test files (217 tests).
The existing large-change-set test now also commits 5,999 of 6,000 selected files under a long directory name, about 2.2 MB of pathspecs. On main it fails with spawn E2BIG; with this change it commits exactly the selected files and leaves the one unselected file modified.
The literal-path test now also covers a leading dash, a space, and a tab and newline in file names (the last skipped on Windows), through both the temporary index used to prepare the commit message and the real index used to commit.
A selected path containing an embedded NUL is rejected during both commit preparation and commit; the existing staged changes and HEAD stay intact. The regression fails on the previously published head.
The existing nested-working-directory selection test passes unchanged.
Standalone check on Linux with Git 2.56.0 and a 2,097,152-byte ARG_MAX: 20,000 selected paths (2.14 MB) fail with E2BIG as argv and stage all 20,000, and nothing else, through stdin.
Web, on main: choosing Commit from the Git action menu with 750 long-path files selected out of 751 shows "Action failed: spawn E2BIG", and nothing is committed.
Web, with this change: the same selection commits, and the one unselected file is still listed as changed.
Desktop app (Electron dev build), on main and with this change: the same selection fails with "Action failed: spawn E2BIG" on main, and commits with one file left changed after the fix.
Android emulator, on main: the same selection on the commit sheet, then the branch sheet stuck on "Git action in progress" with all 751 files still changed.
Android emulator, with this change: the same selection commits, and the branch sheet shows 1 file changed.
iOS simulator, on main: the same result as Android, and the server logs spawn E2BIG for this commit.
iOS simulator, with this change: the selection commits and one file stays changed.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Selected-file staging now streams paths to Git instead of placing them in command-line arguments, avoiding size limits for large selections. Existing file-selection semantics and commit safeguards remain unchanged.

Walkthrough
Selected-file staging now sends literal paths to Git through NUL-delimited stdin and rejects paths containing NUL bytes. Integration tests cover large selections, long paths, and filenames with special characters.

Summary
Pathspec staging and regression coverage apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts
Staging passes selected paths through git add --pathspec-from-file=- --pathspec-file-nul and rejects selections containing NUL bytes. Tests cover a 5,999-file commit with one modified file left out, unusual filenames, and NUL-containing selections that fail without changing the staged diff or HEAD.
The selected-file staging change is ready to merge after normal checks; no unresolved issue is established by the supplied evidence.

Explanation
The title names the main change: committing a large file selection no longer fails with spawn E2BIG. The changeset switches selected-file staging to stdin-based pathspecs (--pathspec-from-file), which avoids the OS argument-size limit that causes that error. The title is specific, follows the conventional commit format, and matches the summary and objectives.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections. It has a clear Problem section (E2BIG on large selections, with the argv size limits), a Change section that explains the stdin-based pathspec approach and the NUL-byte rejection, and a Verification section with specific test runs, observed results, and a list of unchecked platforms (macOS, Windows). The Scope and approval section cites no linked issue and argues the focused obvious-bug exemption, which the template allows. The description does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval, so a reviewer may still ask for that. Otherwise the description is complete.
