fix(gitlab): the checks panel lists each pipeline job - #28728
A GitLab merge request shows its whole head pipeline as one "Pipeline" check. When it fails, the checks panel can't say which job broke, so you have to open GitLab to find out. GitHub pull requests list each check in the same panel. Fixes#13431.
Change
The checks and detail reads now also ask GitLab's GraphQL API for the head pipeline's stages and their jobs, in one request alongside the existing trigger job read.
Each job becomes a check named after its stage, like test / unit, with GitLab's status and label, linking to the job log.
Jobs allowed to fail show as neutral. Retried attempts are left out, so a job counts by its latest run. Manual jobs stay neutral.
A stage whose job list GitLab didn't return whole stays one check with GitLab's stage status. That covers more than 100 jobs, jobs GitLab couldn't resolve, and jobs without a name.
If the stages can't be read whole, or the pipeline has none, the single "Pipeline" check stays as before.
The read sits behind the existing downstreamChecks flag, so the permission check before writes still skips it. No paging, no cache, no new setting. Everything is in packages/source-control-gitlab.
Scope and approval
#13431 is a triaged bug (accepted). An earlier attempt, #13434, listed every job over REST and was closed as too large. GraphQL removes the paging, caching and trigger status logic that made it big.
This PR first showed stages, with a failed stage replaced by its failed jobs. Testing on a self-managed GitLab found that a cancelled job beside a failed one disappeared, and a running stage didn't say which job was running. Per #26869 it now lists every job, which matches GitHub's check runs and costs the same single request.
Verification
Decoder tests in gitLabMergeRequestJson.test.ts: every job listed under its stage with success, failed, allowed-failure, cancelled, running and manual statuses, and a retried attempt left out. A table of incomplete job lists (none, empty, more than one page, an unresolved job, a job without a name) each keeps the stage as one check. Partial or missing stages return nothing.
CLI tests in GitLabPullRequestCli.test.ts: the request sends the right project path and iid, a failed GraphQL read keeps the "Pipeline" check, and downstreamChecks: false makes a single call.
Checked that every queried job field (retried, detailedStatus, allowFailure, webPath) exists in gitlab.com's GraphQL schema.
vp run check:changed passes.
The screenshots below were taken on the earlier stages version, against a real gitlab.com merge request with a failed openapi job in its test stage.

Summary
Decode pipeline stages and jobs packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/gitLabMergeRequestJson.ts, packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/gitLabMergeRequestJson.test.ts
A GraphQL query fetches head-pipeline stages and jobs. The decoder maps stage data to checks and expands failed stages into eligible failed-job checks. Tests cover statuses, links, and responses without usable stages.
Add stage checks to merge-request details packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/GitLabPullRequestCli.ts, packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/GitLabPullRequestCli.test.ts
Merge-request detail reads stage and trigger-job checks concurrently. It uses stage checks when available and appends trigger-job checks. Tests cover read failures, request routing, and downstreamChecks: false.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes are limited to packages/source-control-gitlab. The GraphQL stage query, stage decoder, fallback behavior, downstreamChecks gating, trigger-job integration, and focused tests all support the GitLab checks behavior in [#13431]. No unrelated product area, setting, cache, or paging feature is added.
Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(gitlab): the checks panel lists each pipeline job" matches the main change. The PR makes GitLab merge-request checks list head-pipeline stages and their jobs instead of one "Pipeline" check. The title is specific and follows a conventional-commit format. It says "each pipeline job", while the change lists jobs under their stages and keeps some stages as single checks, so the wording is slightly narrower than the full behavior. This does not make the title unrelated.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description includes complete Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It explains the behavior, implementation, issue scope, focused tests, observed results, limitations, screenshots, and agent details. It does not include an explicit maintainer approval comment, but it provides the triaged issue and scope rationale, so the description is mostly complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#13431] requires one named, linked check per CI job, including running and successful jobs. decodePipelineStageChecksJson emits one check per stage and expands only failed stages into failed jobs. Jobs in non-failed stages remain grouped under the stage check. The existing trigger-job behavior is retained, but the primary per-job requirement remains unmet.
Resolution
Change the head-pipeline decoding and read path to emit an individual check for every relevant CI job, including running and successful jobs, with the job name and log URL. Preserve the trigger-job status and link behavior. Add or update tests for running, successful, failed, and incomplete job reads, including the required fallback.

blacksmith passed vp run check:changed github/main: format, lint, knip, typechecks for 11 packages, and 119 tests. the two directly affected files passed separately with 104 tests. the previously failing MessagesTimeline browser file passed all 38 tests on both main and the candidate; an earlier candidate run failed its scroll-position assertion, so that test was not consistently green locally. two independent read-only reviews found no confirmed defects. the remaining incomplete-job review thread is covered by the current fallback and was resolved.
this run did not repeat live gitlab or client verification. the earlier evidence above is historical and predates the contributor's change to display every job.

Detect incomplete job connections before expanding a failed stage.
CiStage.jobs is a paginated CiJobConnection. With more than 100 jobs, jobs(first: 100) can omit later jobs. The query does not request that connection's pageInfo, so the decoder can emit only the failed jobs from the first page and replace the stage check with an incomplete list. Request and inspect jobs.pageInfo.hasNextPage, then return the existing fallback when the job list is incomplete.

lines 297 - 302:
Update the merge-request pipeline query and decoder for the `stages` connection:
request and parse each stage’s `jobs.pageInfo.hasNextPage`, then use the
existing fallback instead of expanding a stage when its jobs connection is
incomplete. Preserve the current handling of complete job lists.
This covers some of the "not verified" items above: allowed failures, a live trigger job with a failed child pipeline, manual jobs, and a retried job.
Setup: GitLab 19.5.3 (CE, self-managed), head e39247a11a. I called the provider's getChangeRequestChecks with the real glab doing every request. The UI was not part of this run. The merge request's head pipeline has these jobs:
Stage
Job
GitLab status
build
build (retried once)
success
build
compile-docs
success
test
lint
success
test
unit-tests
failed
test
flaky-optional (allow_failure: true)
failed
test
slow-job
canceled
deploy
package (needs unit-tests)
skipped
deploy
deploy-manual (when: manual)
manual
deploy
release-gate (manual through rules, blocking)
manual
deploy
child-pipeline (trigger, no strategy: depend)
success, child pipeline failed
GitLab reports the pipeline as manual ("Blocked waiting for manual action") even though unit-tests failed.
So main shows the failed job as neutral, and only the child pipeline row makes the merge request look red. Without a trigger job it would read as passing.
That matches GitLab. The allowed failure stays out, the retried build counts by its latest attempt, and the child pipeline row is still there.
One gap: slow-job was cancelled in the same failed stage, and it doesn't appear anywhere. The stage is replaced by its failed jobs only, so a cancelled job next to a failed one disappears. Listing cancelled jobs (other than allowed failures) alongside the failed ones when expanding a failed stage would fix it.

Problem
A GitLab merge request shows its whole head pipeline as one "Pipeline" check. When it fails, the checks panel can't say which job broke, so you have to open GitLab to find out. GitHub pull requests list each check in the same panel. Fixes #13431.
